Ok.....the character art is really hideous.

It looks like they are trying to emulate the style of the game art....but somewhere along the line I dont think they're doing a good job. I mean, with Fantina....my god she looks hideous...and Brock still had some minor attraction towards her. Idk should the artists have stuck to their old styles instead of trying to emulate the game art some? Cheryl was friggin ugly as well.

Is that the episode where Kinoshita was the director? She's pretty bad regardless so that might also be why the art isn't so good.

As many people have said, the character art quality depends the art directors of the episodes.

But I agree, Cheryl looked terrible in the anime. She looked a lot better in the games. The game art itself to me is great (the art direction of Pokemon always seemed to be one of my favorites), but I think they shouldn't try too hard to emulate it in the anime.

I don't like how the Sugimori-style has something against human noses.

The character art of the Final Fantasy Tactics games are a lot worse with noses (or lack of).

Handsome had the same nose-design. IMO the anime-only characters have the best designs that fit for animation. Sugimori's new style is good but it fits the games and stock art better than (this kind of) anime.

Agreed. I always felt that the game art and the anime art separated the two and made each feel like their own story. At least to me.

Eh, I think you guys are just being a little too critical. It looks fine to me.

I hardly noticed. But it's just another (small) example of the anime refusing to differ from the games in most ways.

OMG! I thought I was the only one pissed off by this xD It looks ridiculous, and animates horrendously. As Meron said - fine for game art and stock art, not fine for animation. Just stop already! (Also, IIRC, Shirona suffers from noseless syndrome too.)

That's odd because I always got the impression that Cynthia had a really *big* nose. At least really round.

And if you're going to talk about art, Fantina's not the best character to use, considering how masculine she looks.

Fantina is supposed to be a foreigner, so her... odd... appearance is part of her character. To draw her "normal" would be to draw her out of character.

The Pokémon anime has always been lacking in animation quality compared to the big boys (which is to say most other anime).

I have to agree, but then again, It is a low budget kodomo(sp?) Anime. They don't have the budget that the larger animes have. The great animation is in the movies.

That's because, if I remember correctly, only the last Cheryl episode had good animation.

They seem to have gotten better with giving the worst animators the filler episodes, and keeping the good animation for the important or battle-centric episodes.

I didn't really notice it but yeah, they are trying to emulate Sugimori's artstyle.

Trying to is the key word.

hmm... I wouldn't say it's hideious, but it's just an odd decision.

So..."foreign" is ugly as shit?

Eh...plenty of American characters in Japanese cartoons are fugly to the tenth degree, though Lt. Surge looked fine.
