Was originally going to post this as a blog, but then I realized, I can post it as a topic and then everyone can post their old habits they've carried from Gold/Silver/Crystal to HeartGold/SoulSilver. :3

Is there anything you've found yourself doing in HeartGold and SoulSilver which you used to do in Gold, Silver, or Crystal?

Just like with the original games, I'm taking it extremely slow and trying to over-level my Pokémon a little 0:

Not sure if this really counts, but, I didn't realize until I was about it trade it- but I'm trading from Platinum a Chikorita onto HeartGold (I started with a Cyndaquil).

Now when I started Crystal originally, I started with Chikorita, but traded over a Cyndaquil from Gold/Silver.
I'm doing the same thing again, only in reverse. I guess something about Johto makes me want to have two starters :3

So, do you guys have any old habits that have carried over?

funny enough... almost none of my habits returned. I mean, beside having my starter evolved by Falkner I've been doing a lot of new and different things. I'm even battling everyone.

I did exactly what I planned to do with my old Silver file (after it had become corrupted and made me start over): Use my other games to construct a team of MY choosing rather than collect the random assortment of Pokemon they decided to have us catch from the beginning.

Can't say if it's habitual or not, but I generally keep my team equal in level and don't invest in HM Slaves (as much as possible).

Also, screw buying Potions of any kind.

Nothing that I don't do with every game. For instance:

1. Until I beat the Elite 4, I don't trade any stuff over from my other games. The only exception this time was the Jirachi and PCP, and even then I didn't use either of them, or Spikey Eared Pichu (though, seeing as how the Jirachi starts at lvl 5, it would have been nifty to do so).

2. I don't plan out my team beforehand, and let it evolve naturally. Sure this occasionally comes back to bite me in the ass, especially before Gyms and the Four, but there's nothing quite like the quiet surprise I felt at becoming attached to my Victreebel ("Leonard", after Nemoy's character "William Bell" on Fringe... I like big degrees of separation), a Pokemon I've always disliked.

3. Putting off hunting those stupid roaming dogs. Because they are stupid and I hate them but I want them and I hate them.

Playing it till the sun comes out, and your eyes are baggier then your grandma.

Aside from choosing Cyndaquil again(which I believe I did nearly every time in G/S/C), and picking the female option as I first did in Crystal, I don't really have any habits, other than ones gained from the other games.

On HeartGold, I've already got my Fire-Grass-Water three (Quilava-Slowpoke-Hoppip).

On my SoulSilver though, I have yet to get either (Croconaw, Flaafy, Heracross and Togepi are my team).

The only habits that returned was chossing Cyndaquil as my starter and having a female Mareep/Flaaffy/Ampharos. Well, the Ampharos itself could be the actual habit, since the gener was just random, it just happened that the one I caught with the right nature was a female, like the one I had in my old Gold version.

But apart from that, I quit old habits ever since the very moment I chose to buy SoulSilver instead of HeartGold (I only had Gold 10 years ago).

Yeah, I chose HeartGold as I got Silver first when they originally came out.

i did exactly what i did back in Gold. Over level my starter to lvl 70 by the time i get to the elite four on the first try

The habit of going through the game underleveled. It's tough, but fun.

i usually end up repeating the same old habits... so ive done a lot in my SS not to:
1. i picked cyndaquil instead of chikorita (in Gold) and totodile (in Crystal)
2. i also didn't catch mareep and caught a gastly instead..
3. i finally picked the gender option corresponding to my actual sex for the first time in these games, mainly because lyra is cute and in genII i couldn't stand Kris's sprite..
4. raised my eevee into an umbreon instead of espeon (crystal) or jolteon (gold)

however i did end up having a pure electric-type on my in-game team again (raikou) and caught and raised the union cave lapras..
thats all i can really remember tho....i suspect i am doing many things the same

I noticed that I'm catching a lot of pokemon that are either poison or half poison like I did on the original.

Something different though is I'm battling every trainer and I'm even looking for them to level up my pokemon. On the original I would do everything in my power to skip the trainer, walk around them or go the long way.

I'm actually doing everything the same. XD In every game I've played, I've chosen the fire pokemon and I still did. I'm still catching every pokemon I don't own and then ignoring them in the box.

One thing that's different is I'm leveling up equally. Used to just level up the starter so I could just reach the next town, meaning I'd have this crazy powerhouse. Not doing that anymore.

Oh, also not riding my bike. I used to ride my bike religiously, and now I don't. I love having pokemon follow me.

But other than that..yeah, not doing anything else different

Oh yeah, talking about the levels, I always trained them equally save for my starter which usually was 5 levels higher than te rest. I've done that since 1998, but starting with Platinum my starter now is only two levels above the others, and this carried over to SS (currently, my Typhlosion is at Lv. 65 while the rest are Lvs. 62-62). So, while not a brand new habit, at least it is new in contrast to my original Gold playthorughs.

I have too many HM slaves on my team lol having a tough time trying to beat the league because of it (I also caught a oddly colored pokemon other than the Gyarados)

The only real habit that I have kept from playing the older games is overleveling my starter. It is usually 2-3 levels above the rest of my party so not too bad.

To cut down on the amount of HM Pokemon that you need, I would suggest going to Route 1 or 29 and catching a Sentret. Then go and level the Sentret up to level 15 so it evolves into Furret. Furret is a great HM Pokemon as it can learn Cut, Surf, Strength, Whirpool, and Rock Smash which is pretty useful so you don't have multiple HM Pokemon taking up valuable Party space.

lol speaking of route 29 I found a yellow Pidgey on that route when chasing down Entei isn't that funny? And I captured him

Nothing. I was like 7 years old. I skipped all the battles, leveled up only my feraligatr, etc. This time, I'm battling everyone and all my pokemon are equal (about 60ish atm).
