Hello every,

I just joined the forums today (feel free to add me as a friend, I could use the invites for trading and DW...thanks), and I was looking up the different methods for getting shinies, and I see the odds are much harder then in the past. Then I remembered the method for getting them back from generation II by getting a shiny ditto from gen I with the red gyarados. I got the ditto, but I never tried it out and tested the odds which were said to be 1/64. I haven't played a pokemon game until Heartgold and white version, so I was wondering if shinies could be farmed this way and be traded up thru the generations...with the proper systems of course?

If this does work, would breeding with 2 shinies affect the odds in gen V

Sorry if this was talked about elsewhere, I didn't feel like searching for all of this.

First of all, this is the wrong forum. This is the forum for trading pokemon.

Secondly, actually it hasn't become harder. Finding one in the wild is less likely, however with the Masuda method it's become pretty easy to do.

The Masuda method essentially is that if you breed a pokemon from one language game, and breed it with one of another language game (for example; English Gardevoir with Japanese Gengar) the offspring has 1/1000 chance of being shiny.

No. The exact numbers are 4/8192 and 6/8192. It really makes four or six checks for shininess instead of one. I'm wondering when the Japanese smeargle craze will start. As they can pass down egg moves and dream world abilities.

According to Bulbapedia, the chance of getting a shiny pokemon through Masuda method was increased from 1/2048 in Gen IV to 1/1366 in Gen V

EDIT: same thing as what Vixana said :)

I don't 100% know how the old transferring methods worked, but I'm under the impression that's why Gold and Silver were remade: they became incompatible to trade with the newer generation games. So, I don't think it's possible to trade Pokemon from that old of a gen, alas.

Well, thanks everyone for the info. I will definitely be working to get shiny pokemon once I have a couple of my teams together. I just started doing trades, and I haven't added any friends yet. So let me know if you mind me adding you. Thanks:)

It's one in 2000 in Gen4. It was increased to 1/1000 in Gen5.

I wouldn't round to the nearest thousandth since the difference between 1/1000 and 1/3666 (the actual ratio) is an entire decimal place.

It's 1/1366, not 1/3666 for Masuda Method of getting shinies.

This type of thing can go in Simple Questions/Answers in the future.

And discussion regarding the various methods of obtaining shinies (Masuda, chaining, etc.) can be had in their respective threads.
