At 11AM this morning, the Loony and Greenback (Canadian and American dollars) reached trading parity for the first time in over thirty years.

Thus end thirty years of American abuse on Canadian over the relative value of our respective monies.

(And, at the rate this is going, thus begin an unspecified lapse of time of Canadian abuse on Americans over the relative value of our respective monies. Sweet revenge is ours at last!).

As a consumer, I'm pretty happy; but looking from a business point of view, this isn't very good correct? What comes to mind first would be exports, tourism, and manufacturing. So this is a little bitter-sweet. Right?

Exports (primarily things like lumber) and tourism will hurt somewhat, yes. On the other hand, those "unavoidable" exports (Albertan oil, to a lesser extent Québec and Ontario energy, etc) will keep selling, and bring in more monies now.

I guess its a good thing my family saves Candian money (there's a lot in Michigan). I wonder if we can convince vending machine makers to make their machine accept canadian coin. And make them accept dollar coins while you're at too you lazy bastards.

Well it is partly oil that's pushed CAD up to US$1. The real figure to look out for is US$1.06140. US$ is now strengthening; it's reached the lofty heights of 99.9 Cdn cents for the first time in an hour! :p

(Oh, and the thirty-year American abuse was started by events in your Belle Province!) :)

Most do accept the dollar. What they should start accepting is the $2 (and redesign it and the $1, too)...

Finally, at last, Hollywood companies will stop filming their shows in Vancouver and US auto manufacturers will stop making their cars meant for the US market in Canada because it's too expensive. Come back ye prodigal children and bring your jobs here.
