So I've noticed that locking down the site really helped since the site was slow the first few days. However, the last day, day and a half I've been flying right through the site with no problems. Does this mean it is opening soon? I'm really not trying to sound like I'm complaining, just curious. Although you have to admit that quite a few pages need to be updated now.

Lucky for some. I've been having a lot of trouble getting through. From the reports I've heard, the server usage has actually been increasing, apparently as more and more people get the game and need help. By minimizing the amount of edits made, we're actually able to minimize the server damage. If you'd like to leave an edit request with an admin via the forums, I'm sure any "urgent" edits will be able to be made. We're looking at reopening next week, but it all depends on the traffic, so if you can wait until then, that's fine too.

No, they aren't urgent edits by far. I was just wondering because the sites been loading fast for me. Maybe I was just hitting it at a good time.

It has been hit and miss with me.

Sometimes it works smoothly, while other times I get 503'ed

Yesterday I made about 5 edits and got 504'd every time.

Yeah, I'm still getting 503's, even editing at 9 or 10 PM my time.

Ok yeah, I've just been getting lucky. Super slow right now.

It would be nice to have an estimated date for the reopening of editing. I really want to contribute to certain lacking articles!

yes, it would be nice to have an estimated time....too bad we dont have one.

Well, as an admin, you might have an idea from past game releases of how long the excess traffic usually lasts. How long did Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum cause excess traffic before edits were restored?

Does anyone know when the 503 problem will be sorted out? Sometimes it's getting hard to even browse the forums, let alone post, because of all the errors. D;
Not saying "IT'S YOUR FAULT OMG FIX IT", just asking if you guys are working on it/if you know when the server will be healed.

I don't recommend opening Bulbapedia until you get the 503-error down. I'm not sure if traffic affects the errors, but, if it does, best to keep BP closed so the forums and other areas of the BulbaGarden stay up.

The 503 "problem" is just happening because the servers are being completely overwhelmed with traffic. Just picture a busy rush hour on a narrow stretch of highway. According to Archaic the servers were having to handle about 20x the normal peak load locked down pre-release, so it gets its equivalent of a traffic jam - the 503.

Platinum wasn't that bad, as I remember. We didn't lock down.

As for me, I wasn't a member of Bulbapedia when Diamond and Pearl debuted, so I've got nothing to input there. Deth didn't join until afterwards, either.

As said above me, it's not something that can be fixed, but rather a matter of waiting for visits to the site to go down. I do believe we're looking to juice up the servers before Generation V hits, though.

Well, someone must know or can ask someone how long Diamond & Pearl caused a lock-down. Could someone ask another admin who has been here longer?

From what I remember, they didn't lock Bulbapedia (or at least not long enough for me to notice), and the traffic wasn't this bad.
I might be wrong as my memory is hazy, but yeah. If D/P did have a lock-down, it wasn't for this long.

If I remember correctly, we didn't have any lockdown for D/P, no. There was slowdown though, lasted maybe a week (hard to pin a definite start/stop time on the slowdown, since it faded out slowly).

You've also got to keep in mind, Bulbapedia has grown more popular since the D/P release as well. While we have grown a bit server-wise too, the traffic has kept up and passed us by on more than one occasion.

this is why the server is locked. if we unlock the servers, server stress will spike even more causing more 503s. we dont want the server to be locked, we want people to edit, but we cant do it because if we unlock it, the regular amount of edits would just crash the server anyway. so youve got sporadic 503s as opposed to one big one.

also we didnt lock it for Pt because the difference between Pt and D/P is relatively minor. server usage went up, but not a whole lot. as someone said, HG/SS is an all new game and we are regularly spiking over 20x normal stress. the site wasnt as popular when D/P came out, so its not a good benchmark.

somgon is also having troubles.

could it be possible to close the large, overly veiwed pages to save, the stuff that you use to look at stuff.
as you can tell I am an expert on the subject.

I mean pages like pikachu and raquaza, and missingno, since wikipedia has that covered.

I really have no idea how any of this works, not to mention what a server is, so i someone wrote a paragraph about them, that would be cool

I believe it's spelled "Smogon"...

They can lock pages individually but how are they supposed to know which pages are "overly viewed? And I'm pretty sure experts don't say "stuff that you use to look at stuff".

Wikipedia =/= Bulbapedia. Wikipedia does not have all the in-depth information that Bulbapedia does.

In very basic terms, a server delivers a web page to your browser. Bulbagarden has three servers last I heard, and they're still not enough apparently.
