I was watching one of my Orange Islands DVDs a while ago, and I noticed something rather interesting: While we've seen the Pokemon Center PCs using an Apple-like system, for one frame, while Meowth is setting up the videophone connection in "A Scare in the Air", it appears Team Rocket works off a Windows-like platform. (See attached screenshots)

While it's not known if TR's servers all run Windows (although it's a possibility, but we'll have to wait till an ep shows other Rocket computer usage to know for sure), I just found this rather interesting, and couldn't help but wonder if it shows a bias on the animators' behalf.

Team Rocket's using their own closed source version of Linux or BSD. It's free and customizable. I'm sure if you're a worldwide crime syndicate organization posessing multiple legitmate businesses as fronts, you'll have some IT department that'll get everything running on a maintainable OS. Needless to say, Team Rocket are supporters of the OSS movement. :O

I would guess it's a forked version of BSD...at least their systems remain stable...if it ran on windows, we would see a massive amount of trucks with a fake windows logo. This also brings up a good point on what os'es animes prefer. For example, Hitomi from movie 7 appears to be using Mac OS X. I guess the anime writers despise windows.

TR's one use probablyy *nix, WindowMaker (ro sth like that) running.

More interesting is OS shown in 3rd movie, and i think the 2nd and 7th one featured some shots too.

The geekiness level of that post just made my head asplode. (applauds)

Or perhaps the artists use Macs, as the stereotype goes.
Well, I asked a friend of mine about it, and he said Mac is the norm in Japan anyway. Although I know that Mac is used a lot more often than Windows for Photoshop type applications (why this is is beyond me)

Probally the first computer is running a modified version of Mac OS 9 Classic. It's obivous on the 2nd picture it's running linux because Windows doesn't look like that.

Linux, Windows, whatever. (doesn't know much about Linux, being a Windows girl.)

Highly doubtful. The Mac, if anything, is probably less common there, with the high level of conformist thinking.

You learn something new every day then, don't you? (Makes note to smack guilty party with a paper fan).

So then TR is more conformist than the justice-loving Pokemon League?

Wasn't there an episode or episode arc in Tenchi parodying Americans loving Microsoft and Microsoft trying to take over Japan's "non-standard" computers? I think it involved Pretty Sammy...

When I was in Japan a few years ago, most of the computers at Hiroshima Shudo University were Windoze-based. Electronics stores did have substantial Mac sections, but I'd hardly call it "the norm".

It would make sence if they run a some kind of *NIX or self created operating system. I mean, what kind of criminal organisation would Team Rocket be if they need to be dependend on other companies?
