Before we even get down into nitty gritty things like rules and so forth, there's one issue I'd like to resolve.

How do you all want this organised to begin with?

Should we just be having regular tournaments? Or would you like to see more of a League, either akin to a sports league in the real world (with set pairings for each round), or a more informal league where people just arrange matches and we keep a tally of win/loss/draw? Or even maybe a league like in the games themselves, where you get to go around beating gym trainers for the right to battle gym leaders, and eventually an "Elite 4"? Or even a league like in the anime, where you battle the gym leaders for the right to be in the tournaments? Should we even have tournaments if we're doing one of the other league structures?

In short....what the heck do you guys want us to do? ^^;;

I'd make a poll, but with all the different options available.....I'd be afraid you'd just be hitting "Other" and having to explain things anyway. ^^;; So, whatever ideas you've got, regardless of if they might be covered above, type them out here, and your reasons for why you'd prefer that. Hopefully we can settle on something that will satisfy everyone.

A system in which players are free to challenge whomever, whenever they choose. Then, at the end of a "season" (12 weeks) those who have a large amount of wins (say, the top ten players) are entered into the grand tournament to see who is the best battler of them all. Systems with just gyms become too inactive, and too reliant on 8 or so people.

Perhaps we could HAVE Gyms, where they're optional and work like the badges in manga; having eight of them would automatically give one entry into a tourney.

Would prizes be involved?

Well, the gym idea is good bu the problem is, some of us live in the UK and due to timezones and whatnot it might be difficult.

For the gym thing I would wait to its released around the world(because we dont know if a 3rd gen euro cart will work with a US D/P cart for transferring)

Tornamentsto see whos the best on this forum would be a good idea because it will push people to their best and will be fun.

But please dont call me a cheater when I battle, I gave shiny pokemon which are deemed near to impossible to get.

Several people could be left in charge of one gym, each person from a different time zone from the next. Even if one person is in charge of a gym, I'm sure the two people can arrange SOMETHING. On TOP of that, that's why I suggested that Gyms be OPTIONAL; so that if a Gym Battle IS impossible, he or she can still enter the league by winning lots of free battles.

I like the idea Paperfairy had---free battles with regular tourneys with eight Gyms for the courageous challengers to try.

I was working on organizing a "team" of sorts for the DP Wifi upon release, should I still pursue it?

If a clan wars aspect is implemented later on, I'd say go for it. Otherwise, I'm don't really see the point.... ^_^;;

Also, I wanted to enforce that those who have the eight badges gets precedence over those who have lots of wins. For example; there are 11 trainers who have finished a set of badges. Those 11 AUTOMATICALLY are entered into the grand tournament, and then the top five players (not including the 11 who are already in) are enetered into this grand tourney to make an even 16.

Well, I'd bet we'd need more than sixteen...

Maybe do some sort of wild card matchup for those who defeated the gyms, and have the best of the battlers be one level up, like how the playoffs work in the NFL?

Only, of course, it'd be much more expanded. Well, maybe not too much, but slightly.

How would we decide who got the gyms, though, if we had that system? And how many?

Sixteen was just a number to accomadate to the eleven badge winners; but I think that the grand tourney should only include the best of the best; meaning the badge holders and some of the top players.

Unsure of how gyms would be distributed, but I think that four is enough; I think eight is too many. Perhaps we'd start the league with a tourney, and the top four winners would recieve gyms.

Maybe not a team then, but what about an unofficial group of gym-style players that award symbolic titles? I mean, like a Battle Frontier of sorts (this is MY idea, so don't steal it please)

Personally, I don't see why we can't have a league that does many different things. After all, isn't that what Bulbagarden's about - bringing together different ideas and different parts of the community into one interesting but enjoyable whole?

There's a lot of different ways to run competitions, so I think we could run different styles of tournaments at different times. Some could be free-entry, some could be reserved for those with badges... there could be entry requirements like those found in the Cups in Stadium, set for each tournament. We could even run several at once.

As for how to set up Gyms... I think rather than just having eight gym leaders, we should have a considerable number, like you'd find in the anime world. In fact, for here on the forums, I could even draw little badges, and we could use them as usergroup icons... even setting the gym leader in charge of that group.

I liked Zeta's idea in the other thread; whilst the league (whatever system we decide on) is going on, there would be smaller tournaments (namely the Cups) that are free entry.

Then, the only tourney with any member restraints would be the grand tourney at the end of the "season" as stated in my earlier idea.

Ooh, I like this. ^_^

Pie, while lots of Gyms would be rather interesting, you've gotta take into consideration what it could boil down to: everyone and their grandmother has a gym. Gym Leaders are supposed to provide a challenge (well, I THINK they should), and although some people would kill for the Gym, it doesn't make sense to give them one if they're not going to be a challenge for other trainers.

For example, I'd LOVE to be a Gym Leader when this league starts, but I don't think that I could do a very good job with it. I'm an okay battler, where as Gym Leaders as battling icons.

I really want a cup setup like the original Stadium. Especially the Baby cup, because it would be interesting to see how people breed their pokemon to get the best Level 1 pokemon.

Yes but in D/P all baby pokemon hatch at level 1 don't they? I'm just saying level 1 so that we have people relying on their breeding skills rather than how high they level them.

Right; but you had said something about a Baby Cup, which didn't happen until Stadium 2 (Little Cup). You said original Stadium. XD

But yes, a Little Cup would indeed be interesting....

Well it's not a matter of "Let's give everyone a gym!" We'd still have standards for who gets one and who doesn't, or else there'd be no point. But if there's more than eight people with gyms, that greatly reduces the problem of people not getting their eight badges due to timezone problems and allows people to go after more once they've gotten their original eight.

This is true. I still think eight is too many.

What would be the Gym Leader Selection Test? Would we go with my earlier idea of a tourney, or do you have something else in mind?

I was thinking of something like the Pokémon League in the anime again... an evaluation by officials, probably Bulbagarden staff appointed to the job (who may or may not be Gym Leaders themselves). They would be interviewed on the forums and also tested in the heat of an actual battle - the battle would not be judged based on whether or not they win, but that they provide an adequate challenge to trainers. Since that's what their role is.

If they are indeed a good limitus test of ability (and especially if they follow the idea of a traditional Gym Leader and use a particular type of Pokémon), they become a Gym Leader with a badge and maybe with their own Gym thread on the forums for people to challenge them. Maybe even people who want to help but don't quite meet the level of Gym Leader can hang out in those threads as random trainers to fight the trainers who want to challenge the Gym Leader... which would help the Gym Leader themselves, since that means they don't get swarmed with challenges.

Now, for testing by tournament? That's a better system for establishing the Elite Four, I think. The Gym Leaders are high-ranked, but essentially benchmarks for ability. The Elite Four are the ones who are supposed to be the cream of the crust.

I like everything you've said above, and agree; Elite Four ARE the cream of the crust. However, I do not like the idea that Gym Leaders must use a certain type of Pokémon. I think Gym Leaders, (within reason) should be allowed to set their own rules and regulations for their gym, and not HAVE to follow a particular type if they do not want to.
