Origin of Entei/Raikou/Suicune?

So I was trying to show my friend what I got her for her birthday when I ran across this:

Could this be the origin of the Legendary Dogs? I always thought they had some origin in this kind of Asian mythology, and looking at these I wonder if this IS what the "Dogs" (lions?) are based on. Anyone else think so?
 
It would make sense since we can't really split the beasts into either cats or dogs despite most of their feline characteristics.
 
Not to mention that Arcanine would probably be based on it too... And it is also the "legendary Pokémon" too.
 
Yea, that makes alot of sense. Raikou and Suicune, I'm 99.9% they're cats though.
 
Yeah, the two of them look more like cats than dogs, but still got a few canine features, and the same goes for Growlithe and Arcanine
