yeah... After watching a couple hours of old school american dubs of 90s anime I now wanna make a mash up of FMA, Digimon, and pokemon, but use none of their plots, but rather the elements they did best. FMA had amazing plot and atmosphere, digimon had a great cast to me (first gen), and pokemon had a pretty great world IMO.

Now what I have put together is the setting more or less. The world is heavily magic based. Everyone has access to magic, but you're skill is your social class. You're born at a certain power level, and it is very hard to grow stronger. So you can be born of two low class citizens, but due to your magic being so strong you could be in the house of lords. Theres another thing the govt. in the RP is a sort of skill based position. The strongest mages control things, but they are hold their position only until one better can take the position. Besides that it works like a senate each fiefdom having its own mage.

Now there are five types of mages. Despite your power level you only can have one type of magic. it is linked into you on a very deep level. Elemental (typically you'll only have access to one or two elements), pure arcane (this is basically just energy), enchanting (you can imbue magic into items), access (weakest magic out there its very general and basic spellings, but it has some spells like that of the others, but much weaker.), and restoration (healing and also the strengthening of life forms).

Everyone also gets a familair, but they are all magical animals like shade wolves and frost hawks. Basically they also get a type of magic which matches or is the opposite of yours. ((Fire mage could have a salamander ((fire lizard if you dont feel like using known magical creatures)) or an aqua ferret.))

the reason this is a mosh pit is because I want to try and throw around some ideas and get feedback. thanks.

well that is one thing I need to work on. If you've ever seen FMA ((full metal alchemist)) you know it goes from dark and sad at the start has two or three sort of average episodes that seem rather light hearted, and then it goes into demons and resurrection of the dead and all sorts of stuff like merging humans and animals. Its rather creepy, and thats something I want to see in this. I mean everyone has magic there is bound to be a number of people driven mad by it. I think the madness and the revelation of the dark side of this society may be very interesting so long as we don't leave the entire RP with it always being dark and nothing good ever happens, and even when we think we did good its really manipulated by bad guys. SO besides spoiling FMA I'm trying to say I'd like to organize a plot with some deeper parts, but also some nice high points.

As an over arching set of rules we should count out the "house of lords" being corrupt, rebels, and demons as the main plot. Not only are they done to death, but also the first one doesn't fit too well since its very random who is born with what kind of strength.

I mean I like the idea of a sort of engrossed enemy who is all around, but they are obviously an enemy. Not like a cult or a government that tries to slightly disguise its corruption among itself, but the enemy would be obvious and known to all.

As of this moment the best I could give for a plot would be similair to FMA by putting a tabu on a certain magic, or having it be that someone is working to make a new magic something a bit more evil, and the study of it has split many wizards. Not quite to the point where people are outright fighting in the streets, but people have taken sides and defend their position. As for that magic I'd go with probably something of a cruel method to do the magic. Possibly blood magic of some sort using your own or others, but another idea would be a counter magic which is used to destroy the magic in others. a little bit like avatar, but I'd want to keep it different from that by enough that it doesn't become the plot of Legend of Korra.

As for what our characters would do I'd think a summit may be a good way to have us all together. Probably over the issue that would be the main plot. The majority of the "senate" or whatever we'll call it would be against the new magic or said issue, and then through some events we would have to carry on through the plot together. Personally I always find that its good to start the group with a simple objective ((ex. go to said town)) then the bigger mission gets put on them ((ex.save the empire)) this allows for them to meet and display personalities before the major choices are made.

For now that s what I got.

and now I've started watching Soul Eater. BTW Death the Kid. Hell Yeah.

Uhm any other questions?

hmm probably as soon as I feel I know what I'm getting into.

Power is only Soul Deep

When power is in everyone you know there will be a divide. Ethics and power rarely go hand in hand. We thought the rules were clear, but apparently no. Blood magic, forever outlawed by the first council, has begun to come back. Every mage is capable of blood magic in its many forms, but all of them are equally gruesome. With more blood mages coming forth the Council of Gharkos has brought together not only the strongest mages, but also many of the lower mages to help contain the threat. This Monday in the capitol city of Gharkos a meeting will be held where the council will discuss their plans before deciding what the lower mages should do to protect their own towns and cities.

You for whatever reason were selected to come as one of the lower mages. You arrived in Gharkos on Friday, and it is now late sunday. The anxiety is everywhere and in everyone. Blood mages were the biggest threat the first council fought, and now the menace may be returning after such a long period of peace.

Power level might be a bad idea. There's not really much reason not to have it high, and the people with lower power levels will be overshadowed by people with higher ones. In most RPs, it'd best to keep player characters at roughly the same strength.

Then would you guys think an applicable skill system would work? By this I mean everyone is capable of the same power, but it comes down to usage that devides you.

well its less what powers you have, and more what can you do with them.

Ex. A fire mage can use fireball. A skilled fire mage can control the heat and size of the fireball, so it could be a devastating attack of a nice cooking fire.

Okay, then have RPers put down what exactly they can do with their powers, but try and make sure nobody has anything ridiculously strong.

Now, there's a bit of things that would be wrong with the above.

Just going from the normal standpoint of a member, here; but only having a select few spell to choose from with many capabilities would be worse than have having one capability with a broad skill. I think a skill system should be like this, if you'll hear me out @jasonwolf; and @Heroic Sociopath;.

I recently joined (and help co-run) a place that has something called a "Skill Encyclopedia". In this encyclopedia, we had a broad range of skills that, while not having set techniques; had limitations. Obvious ones, like no crossing elements (like controlling Plasma, Lava, or Hellfire from normal Fire / Ice or Demon Water (lol) from Water).

I think we should do that, and include in the rules that there are no crossing of elements or creation of new things unless it does so naturally. In this case, they still wouldn't be able to control it unless they chose to add that to their list of capabilities. Like Fire creates Smoke, and they can essentially put down that they have Smoke Manipulation alongside Fire Manipulation like the character from Mortal Kombat. However, they should only have a set slot of skills they can use... like... 3. That keeps it fair and balanced. If a person controls Water, Wind, and Fire, they can't control Ice and Demon Water (again lol), Spacial Vacuums and Weather Manipulation, and Lava or Plasma, as that would be crossing and cheating.

How does that sound? I thought it was a viable system. Do you, though?

well its not manipulation its spell casting.

Its like petrificus totalus. Causes petrification, but maybe somone know how to use it to paralyze a certain part of the body to stop a wound from bleeding out. Its not I control fire, its I cast fireball.

Well, I said that I posted it to be a possible thing to think about as an alternative to simple spellcasting.

Also, if people could cast spells instead of broad manipulations... then wouldn't people need to make LOTS of them to do the things that they would want to do? Spellcasting is too linear a thing for someone to use well. Oh sure, you can shoot a fireball. Then, you'll want to shoot a stream of fire if that doesn't work. "Okay, lemme ju- WHOOPS, DON'T HAVE IT!"

It wouldn't make sense for the character to be able to use the fireball to make a stream of fire. See where I'm getting?

yes is does he jsut casts fireball really fast.

its supposed to be restricted. Its why everyone has to work together. Think of it like a classic RPG game. you have your healer, your tank, your melee attacker, your ranger, your mage or maybe two if magic is broken up.

here its sort of the same. we'd have a healer who would heal us and strengthen us, a couple enchanters who fought with magic weapons, and then attack mages.

Personally I know I'd go with an enchanter who has imbued his light leather armor to handle extreme damage along with that he has a pair of arm blades which are enchanted to hurt you more the stronger your magic is. The spells he has would be Aegis and Paradox. Aegis being the armor strengthening, and paradox being the one for the blades. His other spell would be to make his weapons appear whenever he needs them so long as they are in 50 meters or so.

Now you may think, but how can you use those in other ways? I can use Aegis on anything that isn't alive to strengthen it. I can put it on a wall, a weapon, anyone else's armor. Paradox would have a similar effect where my character could put it on a wall and it would injure strong mages who touch the wall. Then the teleporting weapons he can make them appear anywhere within 5 feet of him, so he could make them appear in someone need be.

The only thing I've thought of is that magic does take energy. If you are strained or injured your magic will be weaker typically. It can also act to make you stronger though in certain situations like an adrenaline rush.
