Out of curiosity, are there any book collectors here?

I was beginning to realize that I actually have a few pretty interesting books, and got to wondering if anyone else in the forums had a liking for ancient books and first (or special) editions.

I don't mean necessarily being rabid collectors, or the sort to obsess over finding that one elusive book, but, you know, the sort of people who appreciate having a rarer, more special printing of a book.

I always liked the idea, but never really practiced. The first and early editions of books and novels I have are not in a collector worthy format because essentially they were passed down. Originally I was going to say "Unintentionally I am book collector" because like my DVD and Game collection, I probably could open up a library! I just seem to spend a lot of money on books and comics :p... but as for collecting books themselves, I think it is something that I'd like to do, but maybe when I'm a little more well off to spend money on that.

I have Will Durant's The Story of Civilization, published sometime in the 1940s. I found it at an estate sale. I used to have a Nancy Drew book published in the 1930s.

Nonsense. Yeah, a lot of collector want their book pristine and cool, but that doesn't change whether you yourself are a book collector. Just whether (some) other book collectors would trade with you. :-D.

I mean, sure, I'd like my books to remain in decent condition, and I definitely hate that some of the oldest ones can barely be lifted anymore without suffering damage (the 1880s copy of Selected Poems by Robert Browning particularly). But I'm not going to worry about keeping them in perfect conditions.

Not super special, but my treasure is a signed first edition copy of On Stranger Tides, one of my favorite books. Got it from a convention where I sold the author a hat.

I have an entire set of Collins Encyclopedias from the 1960's or 70's which includes year books for the 1970's (various things that happened in the 1970s) and an old huckleberry fin book.

I like reading books and usually have collected many books, mostly not so old. I collect mainly classics and butterfly/moth books.

I have a book "The Moths and Butterflies of Great Britian and Ireland: Vol 7 (1): Hesperiidae-Nymphilidae by A Maitland and John Heath. Its from the 1970's or early 80's and its very rare, only a few copies exist on sale, hardback versions anyway. There was supposed to be 11 volumes of the set made, but only a few got made and put into circulation, and some are very rare as only a few copies of some exist as publication stopped.

I also used to have an entire Goosebumps book collection. The first one I had was "Beast from the East" and loved goosebumps when I was younger.

A friend of mine has a lot of proof-copies of books. Does this count?

I collect books. It's my dream to have my own library someday.:DJust like the one Beast had in the castle, that he showed Belle. I doubt I'll ever get that many books, but it's worth a shot.

I have a bunch but my friend Zeba has more.
She has over 200 so I just borrow the from her. :p

Usually I just try checking books out from the library alot. :] Lately, though, I have hesitated to going there, since there are so many younger kids there who just hang out there after school, luckily I can use my college's library to do that. :]

If anyone's interested, there are a couple of bookstores that specialize in used and rare books: Robert Hittel's shop in Fort Lauderdale (http://fortlauderdale.citysearch.co...lauderdale_fl/robert_a_hittel_bookseller.html), which is three stories tall, and Yellow House books in Massachusetts ([email protected]).

There used to be a great used bookstore in Fort Lauderdale called All Books and Records, which had nearly everything: books, magazines, CDs, DVDs, vinyl, etc. They had paperback editions of Edgar Rice Burroughs' Tarzan books. I'm sorry the owner retired; I used to spend hours there.

Anybody else have a favorite local bookstore (not a chain like B&N)?

I collect Guinness Books. My goal is to find a 1955 copy, the original.

My favorite local bookstore is Powell's. It's made of win and awesome and FIVE STORIES ON A FULL CITY BLOCK.

I used to collect the books in Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events, but seein' as how I got 'em all last year, with there only being 13 of them, that didn't take long. I also have quite the extensive collection of R.L. Stine's Goosebumps books.
