Some pokemon series get more love than they should and some get less love than they deserve. So in your opinion which Pokemon seasons or series are overrated/underrated?

I'm probably going to get a significant amount of negative responses to this but I feel that the OS is overrated. Original =/= Best, in my opinion.

I agree with you actually. I feel like the Kanto storyline could have been fleshed out more. There were many incosistencies imo. Normally Geodude should have been immune to the move, but Pikachu burnt it to a crisp with thundershock.

Definitely OS. Ash had most badges handed to him on a silver platter and as a character have little to no growth except the Charizard arc.

I think the DA! episodes are underrated. Yes, it's mostly filler, but the arc has a nice adventure feel to it, and some of the episodes (like the Butterfree, Jirachi, Ohbem episodes) are classics. It's the highlight of Best Wishes to me.

Underrated: Johto
A lot of people give it flack for being made up of dull fillers, but still has a lot of good and even some great moments (especially in its third year). And I'd argue it had more GOOD fillers than bad.

Overrated: Kanto
Take off those nostalgia goggles and you'll see it actually had a LOT of story problems.

Overrated: BW..........................

If anything, I'd say BW is underrated for if you admit you like it, most people will treat you as if you are crazy. I think it did have a massive amount of problems but personally I enjoyed certain things it brought to the table.

But for me the most underrated series would be Johto, though admittedly that's largely because of nostalgia. I do think it's hated on more than it deserves sometimes however.

Most overrated for me would be DP. I never cared for it all that much personally.

BW is overrated? That's new to me. I rarely see anyone talking positvely about BW.
overrate

have a higher opinion of (someone or something) than is deserved.
In the context of which
I guess my opinion is that the general consensus is not low enough :p

Overrate: Kanto (reasons everyone knows, badly written saga, lots of pitty badges, dumb episodes, unresolved or just utter awful character stories, etc...) For instance, what's with Natsume?! Why was that never explained?!

Underrate: Best Wishes (I know it have lots and lots of flaws and I agree with that, however it does have good points, even if done wrong: Satoshi getting more than 5 Pokemon, Trio being absent from Gym episodes, a female rival, more focus on Sakaki, a four-episodes mini-arc of Nyasu bonding with the main cast, etc...)

Underrated: Johto (most of those fillers were fun!!)

You should visit the Serebi forums sometime... :cautious:

I for one liked BW but with a few minor exceptions. however for some reason that I can't explain @SammyW27 comment was the funniest thing I have heard all day, and this conversation was priceless so thank you. :)

Now to my opinion:

Most overrated to me is XY(Z) because it gets way to much hype for AmourShipping for one (and Pokemon has never been about Romance); and I hear so much how it's the best series to date because of Ash's growth (which isn't a bad thing by no means) and how the animation is better. everyone seems to forget that when Pokemon started it was in the 90's so of course the animation wouldn't be as good as it is today but for a show that started with 90's animation it did really well for it's time. if it didn't then the Pokemon anime would have ended a long time ago. now that's not to say that I don't like it because I do like the series but the other series are just as great!.

Most underrated in my opinion is Kanto. I will say that yeah the nostalgia is there but this is the one that started it all and like I said above it did great for it's time. people for some reason seem to forget that Ash was just a beginning trainer and that his journey was not set up for him to become a fantastic, gifted trainer who becomes champion in less then a month like we do when we play the games. to achieve one's dream your going to have to work hard and yeah you'll fail sometimes but you'll also succeed sometimes too and eventually you'll become what you set out to be and that is what Ash's journey was. he had difficulties from the very beginning but he grew and trained the best way he knew how and he got top 16 at the indigo league; Gary for all his knowledge and skill didn't even get that far, and Ash has grown and come along way and Ash will only continue to grow as he continues his journey around the world.

I'd say that the original series in general is pretty overrated, but more so with Kanto than any other part of the series. It gets a lot of praise for being the start of the series, it's about the first generation of games, which are also overrated, and features the original trio. It's often seen behind rose colored nostalgia glasses in my opinion since it really has a lot of problems. To be fair, this was the first journey in the first series, so there would be more problems with it naturally simply due to how they were figuring out what they wanted to do with the characters. That's understandable, but it does bring it down for me quite a bit.

I'm almost tempted to say that XY is overrated. That might change after I see the whole series and reflect more on my feelings, but I do think people tend to hype it up a bit too much. I do like the series. It has a good cast of characters, good battles, good moments and pretty good writing for the most part. I just get the impression people hype up Ash's skills too much and the focus on the Ash x Serena pairing probably doesn't help with that either.

Despite being part of the original series, I'd say that Johto is definitely underrated. I can see why it wasn't received well and the pacing would benefit more from watching it in chucks rather than in a weekly format, but it's honestly no where near as bad as all of the hate makes it out to be. Sure, it had a lot of filler episodes, but I think that the good ones outnumbered the bad ones in my opinion. It also afforded some much needed improvements over the first two arcs in quite a few areas. I enjoyed watching the first season and I'm eager to get the Johto League Championship DVD in a few weeks. Having all of Johto on DVD after having just Master Quest all these years sounds great to me.

Overrated I have to go with OS because for nostalgia, I still liked it but I think later seasons definitely made me care more when the show progressed, but gen 5 happened..... not going to go any further.

Underrated clearly BW for the same reasons because of how much of a regression it was from both AG/DP, but I have to give credit to some things like making TR actually evil, however that stopped later on and Ash catching plenty of Pokemon was nice but were underutilized even going later into series.

How can BW be underrated? It deserves all the hate it gets, it was a disaster and decolora is to me the worst arc this anime had produced, oh my those were 5 painful months for Pokémon, it also brought down the ratings to the pit.

To me the most underrated saga is definitely Johto, it had too much filler but most of them were memorable and the league was one of the best, the gyms were also entertaining and Ash fought square for his badges (for the first time).

Well, I meant for me because I actually enjoyed BW even though yes it freaking sucks I tried to make the most of it. However yeah when the league and the DA happened I was so done with this shit. At least the journey so far before the league IMO wasn't that bad just meh. Johto only comes 2nd place for me for underrated because I found BW to have so much potential, but christ it was done so badly, I just felt so sorry for anyone that had to go through this:(

Uh, no... That's just your opinion. I agree with Decolora though.

It does have problems, however it also has good things no other series did (when has Sakaki got so much focus?)

I could understand seeing BW as underrated. While I dislike it quite a bit for a number of reasons, there were things that were enjoyable about it and some of the problems I had with the series wouldn't be as much of an issue for other people for various reasons too. I don't think I'd consider it underrated, but I can understand why other people would. Different strokes for different folks and all that. The series was pretty widely disliked from what I saw online, so that would make it more difficult for some people who did like to stand up for it, especially during the more heated discussion, and that is kind of sad too.

Gosh, I too must throw my penny in the pot for XY being overrated. Elements of it are great (group chemistry, gym battles, animation) but a number of important elements suck (all the teams, rivals, failure of continuity with anything prior to XY, the whole Serena arc, Satoshi Geckouga) so I do find people praising it to high heaven, best series EVER .etc rather over the top.
