OK, it keeps refusing to lay text, telling me it doesn't have enough memory, telling me that it wants me to close other programs (even when I've been able to use it many a time with many programs open), and sometimes it will shut itself off. What should I do?

What version of Paint Shop Pro are you using?

And when was the last time you ran a virus check and spyware-eliminating program?

You have been hax0red! ph34r!!111

What software do you use to scan for spyware? Some of it is not effective.
You didn't mess with virtual memory settings, did you? (Or tried one of those "windows tune up" programs out there?)
There could be many things wrong, here...so as a general rule, if you want anyone to have a clue on how to help you troubleshoot this, you'll need to provide more info. -_-; Stuff like OS version and RAM size information would be useful.

Also, I suggest that the next time you get the "not enough memory" message, bring up the task manager and look at the memory usage by running processes. Check for something out of the ordinary. (Like a program that you don't know about, using a huge amout of memory.) <- Assuming that you have Win 2K/XP

I use Spybot for spyware and AVG for viruses. No virii were found and the only spyware was some file that keeps coming back no matter how many times I get rid of it (been there for several months).

I didn't mess with any settings, and the only out of the ordinary thing I've done recently was run a disk check, which I've done before.

And I looked at what programs were running and it was all stuff I have open usually, like messengers and Explorer.

AVG Free does not remove all viruses... I had that problem when it detects a virus but doesn't remove it. You should switch your virus scan to Avast! Home Edition.

Spybot does not detect all spyware, so you need to have a second spyware scanner to be on the safe side.

Again, how much RAM do you have, and what OS do you use?

EDIT: I use CounterSpy against malware. It is shareware, however. I've heard good things about Sphybot, but never bothered to use it. I suggest that you try CounterSpy, just to see if malware is the issue...then remove it.

I used to have spybot, but I replaced it with Microsoft Anti-Spyware and Adaware SE since it doesn't catch all the spyware.

You need to have 2 spyware scanners incase it doesn't detect one of the spyware not in the database. This way, it will remove the spyware more efficency.

Microsoft Anti-Spyware is completely useless for scanning for malware. It is only useful for preventing malware installations and blocking their attempts to modify settings.
EDIT: Adaware is nice, but from experience CounterSpy seems to work better.
(For the record, I am spyware free myself, and always have been. ;) )

Uh, RAM and hard drive capacity are not to be confused...I'm guessing that you have 512MB of RAM, at most -- probably less. RAM is temporary memory used by software while it runs; it's not for storage. Basically, if your RAM gets used up, you won't be able to run additional programs. (If you ignore virtual RAM..)

You can learn more about your system's details by going to your Start menu, then clicking 'Run...', and typing "dxdiag". After hitting enter, you'll see a window with a bunch of info. Find out what "Memory: __________" is. "Page file:" usage info might be relevant as well.

Hmm...that shouldn't be a problem, then. Try creating a new windows user account (control panel > user accounts), as a limited account, and see if you will be able to use PSP properly from there. You could also try one with admin access, but I don't know if that'll make a difference. (I'm wondering if it's a windows settings issue with your current account.)

It seemed to go away on its own--I made an icon the other day, even though the first time I tried, it closed on me. And it was with the same picture that I was trying to make an icon of when this all started.
