I'm assuming this is why Bulbagarden switched to a .net. Is there no way to obtain these parked domains until the registration expires for whoever registered it? (Unless you make a deal with them somehow or something) Is this just a sad fact of the internet, or is there a nice way around this somehow? Thanks.

Squatters squat to make money. They aint gonna just hand over a domain they're making money on. Like you said, sad fact of the internet, but really - unless you have a legal claim to the domain there's bugger all you can do.

When I check whois info, they have expire times- are those good times to try and nab a domain, or do people who've already had the domain usually backorder this stuff? Also, I don't get it, who'd make much money on something like bulbagarden.com? What uses is that going to get you aside from people who mistype the website and then correct themselves, can't these things be negotiated witht the current owner- or do they usually ask for insane amounts of money?

They have expire times, but the person who currently has a domain registered has right of first refusal on the renewal. They've basically got within a certain period of that expiry to say that they want or don't want it. If they don't, it goes back to the general public, if they do..they've got about 14-28 days to grab it. We lost it originally because Bulbagarden.com was owned by Chris, the original owner of the domain, and he couldn't be contacted to transfer the domain over to me so I could renew it at the time that it was up for renewal.

While Bulbagarden does have a legal claim on Bulbagarden.com, since we can show that domain was registered by the squatters in bad faith...it costs thousands of dollars to try and get a domain back, and we don't have the money for that.

So even with an expiration date I shouldn't count on it? And there's not really anything I can do about it?

Wonderful. Ahwell.
