What are the important aspects of a team? I was planning on EV training a team, but I wanted to know what sort of slots I need to have pokemon fill. I was thinking about having a physical attacker, special attacker, and a tank, but after that I kind of got lost. What should I look for when filling in the last three slots?

Here are some common roles in the Pokemon metagame:

Physical Sweeper : A Pokemon that's EV trained in Attack and Speed. It should have a diverse moveset for different types of Pokemon. However, they aren't sturdy and often faint to one or two attacks.

Special Sweeper : Same as above, except it specializes in Special Attack.

Mixed Sweeper : A Pokemon with sufficient Attack and Special Attack to use both effectively. The hardest sweeper to EV train.

Spiker : A Pokemon that can use Spikes, Toxic Spikes, and/or Stealth Rock.

Hazer : A Pokemon with the move Haze to get rid of any stat increases.

Pseudo-Hazer (PHazer) : A Pokemon that indirectly 'Hazes' an opponent's Pokemon through other ways, such as Roar, Whirlwind, Perish Song, or Yawn.

Cleric : A Pokemon that can heal the team.

Baton Passer (BPer) : A Pokemon that uses stat increases, then Baton Passes to another Pokemon.

Tank : A Pokemon that is sturdy enough to survive hits, but can also attack back as well.

Wall : Pokemon used specifically to take hits, wasting the opponent's PP. Can be either Physical, Special, or Mixed.

Those are the most common ones, but there are some more.

Thanks for the help. Rather than start a new thread I'll ask another question here. Which is more important for a pokemon that you want to live a few turns: HP or Defense/Special Defense

The defensive stats. It helps save HP even if you don't have much.
Examples:

Bronzong: Minimal HP but lasts longer in the battles with a massive defense stats

The HP stats. A lot of HP can help, but still goes down faster than defense.
Examples:

Blissey: Massive HP but easily KO'd by a physical attack.

IMO Defense is far more important.

It depends sometimes, if you use the items Life Orb, Toxic Orb, or Burn Orb(Facade), HP is more important

Otherwise, go defense.

It's fairly simple to EV train a tank/wall. If it's mixed, put 252 in HP, 129 in def and 129 in special def (for example, this is the EV set I used on my Umbreon). Otherwise, go 252/252 for HP/whichever def you want and spend the last 6 on speed or something.
