Google 2001 Engine that is.

As per celebration of Google's 10 year anniversary, they've dragged out search logs from early 2001, a time before the world erupted at the slightest hint of the word terror or sour markets.

There's some pretty neat stuff to dig up there.

Common apps like facebook, youtube, or itunes have little or no relevance as we know them today.

Common annoyances like 4chan, spam and copypastas are gone, or at least not as prevalent in searches.

Seriously, as long as the site works, the possibilities for comparison studies and other old facts are endless. There's even the occasional trinket, I mean I've already come across an old banner for the site by ways of Pokemon Abode.

Not every site is accessible, but wayback machine links are provided (not all those work either). Still, it's a great way to look at the past.

Its amazing! You type in pokemon and theres loads of pokemon G/S PREVIEWS i was surprised! What a great thing to have! Too bad the ol' pokemon stadium website isn't avalible...

Incredible. o_o Seriously, really interesting stuff packed in there. The official site was so... completely different. (Talking about Pokemon) And jeez, you look up Pokemon Forum and you find a bunch of ezboards, that basically amounted to nothing. Instead of today's common headline forums, heh. It amazing how things changed drastically in a simple decade.

Here are some good ones.

2001: Results 1 - 100 of about 67,900 for "bin laden"
2008: Results 1 - 100 of about 24,700,000 for "bin laden"
(obvious)

2001: Results 1 - 100 of about 1,620 for "al qaeda"
2008: Results 1 - 100 of about 23,200,000 for "al qaeda"
(also obvious)

2001: Results 1 - 51 of about 51 for "Pokemon Platinum"
2008: Results 1 - 100 of about 1,060,000 for "Pokemon Platinum"

2001: Results 1 - 62 of about 62 for "John Cena"
2008: Results 1 - 100 of about 7,280,000 for "John Cena"
(jesus christ, I knew WWE was pushing him, but god damn)

2001: Results 1 - 58 of about 58 for Google
2008: Results 1 - 100 of about 3,220,000,000 for Google
(From a tiny niche search engine to nigh-overlords of computing in just a few years)

2001: Results 1 - 18 of about 18 for wikipedia
2001: Results 1 - 100 of about 259,000,000 for wikipedia
(See above. Except it's more of a site filled with arrogant people who actually think it'll someday become a refutable source)

2001: Results 1 - 100 of about 8,730 for "never gonna give you up"
2008: Results 1 - 100 of about 974,000 for "never gonna give you up"

2001: Results 1 - 100 of about 4,490,000 for porn
2008: Results 1 - 100 of about 226,000,000 for porn

2008: Results 1 - 100 of about 34,000,000 for "family guy"
(P.S. The new seasons suck)

2001: Results 1 - 10 of about 1,210,000 for iraq.
2008: Results 1 - 10 of about 311,000,000 for iraq.
(I guess no one cared too much about Operation Desert Fox)

2001: Results 1 - 53 of about 53 for bulbagarden
2008: Results 1 - 100 of about 87,000 for bulbagarden
(I'll shout it to the world here: this is the best general Pokemon community I've seen on the web in my own slanted opinion; free of poor administration, idiotic fans, arrogant elitist users, and poor administration (yes, I'm listing it twice) for the most part. So why hasn't it experienced as much growth as some other sites? :p I guess freedom has to come at a price (But not that I'm complaining or anything. Much. >_>).)

Some specifics...

2001: John McCain is a maverick senator and former Vietnam veteran and prisoner of war for 5 years in North Vietnam.

After seeing Biden rip that apart last night, this is all the sweeter. McCain's been doing it for 7 years, apartantly!

2001: iPodlook-below2. 3D Games · iPod · ipod1. The VRex iPod is a revoutionary new immersive entertainment device. Check out our iPod site for more details.

Same spelling format and all. Although the portable music device that keeps getting more portable to the point of ridiculousness we see today is quite different from the crazy 3D game that's seen here.

2001: Searching "fuck" gives you a lot of sites advertising "Hot Fucks", "Black Fucks", "Star Fuck", "Free Fuck Pictures", "AMATEUR FUCK FILES", and "Ninja Fuck Toys" among other things.
2008: Now you get more variety, like "FUCK this website", "Fucking USA Fuck George Bush", "Fuck The Rain", "Fuck D.C. Comics", the definition of "fuck", and "Exploding Fuck Dolls". You still get offers to fuck this and fuck that in the sexual sense, but there's more of it in the figurative sense now.

2001: Yahooligans? I remember that shit with its "funny" rolling eyes.

2001:
Excite - 49 results.
Google - 58 results.
Yahoo - 99 results.
Aliweb - 14,300 results.
"Ask Jeeves" - 881,000 results. (ask.com is 23,300)
Hotbot - 2,480,000 results.
Altavista - 4,800,000 results.
Lycos - 6,640,000 results.

2008:
Aliweb - 33,400 results.
Hotbot - 6,080,000 reuslts.
"Ask Jeeves" - 881,000 results. (Ask.com is 15,800,000)
Altavista - 22,900,000 results.
Lycos - 75,100,000 results.
Excite - 101,000,000 results.
Yahoo - 3,010,000,000 results.
Google - 3,180,000,000 results.

O', how the mighty have fallen.

2001: Q. When will Pokemon Platinum Version going to be released? A. Any info on the Platinum version is unknown and is just a rumor.

So that's two games in this generation that Nintendo based on old rumors (Diamond is the other one and returns 14 results; even though it was actually a ROM Hack). Conversely, "Pokemon Pearl" returns no results. Other things include it being supposedly the english version of Crystal, and an AOL chatroom battling bot (virus?)
