Basically, if these two Thunderbolt Pokemon were to engage in combat which one do you think would win in this electrifying brawl?

I watched the episode where Pikachu fights Gary’s for the first time in awhile and it got me thinking to his battle with Paul’s at the Sinnoh League.

Paul’s-seen as a Pokemon with tremendous endurance and power ever since it was an Elekid that shut Pikachu down in their first and last battles (as an Elekid=tie and as Electavire it won “even though Pikachu fought against 2 Pokemon prior to its showdown with Electavire”). Not to mention the way Paul uses its body to its advantage using its two tails for defense as well as offense. As well as it using Thunder as a Counter-Shield (Though with Motor Drive on both of them I don’t think it will be that effective or useful for that matter).

Gary’s-only seen 3 times in the Electavire form only, beat Ash’s Pikachu without taking one hit while losing to TG’s Toxicroak but it and Umberon were trying to stop TG and Hunter J at the same time so Gary’s focus had to be split between enemies which lead to their defeat.

Personally, I would say Paul’s may have the edge but it would be a tough match because like Ash, Paul had been shown to think outside of the box. Gary did teach his Electavire to “fly” by using its tails as a spring-like object to jump high into the air, Paul taught his Electavire to use its tails to tangle up its opponents as well as use a pseudo Stone Edge or Rock Slide-like attack where its tails unleash a powerful Thunder to produce parts of the battlefield to damage its opponent.

Remember that both have Motor Drive which makes electric moves useless unless the “Thunder on the field” technique counts for anything. Both know; Protect, Thunderpunch and Thunder, Paul’s knows Brick Break and Gary’s knows Iron Tail. Paul’s backup moves are Light Screen and Giga Impact while Gary’s probably forgot Thunderbolt in place of Thunder.

The one who is more creative with their attacks would come out on top. Who do you think would win?

Yes, I know both trainers have more than this Pokemon in common but these are the ones that standout above the rest well to me anyway.

I say Paul because Gary isn't even a trainer any more it's a pointless comparison.

gary wins(he bloody loves his pokemon)
pual loses (he treats them like s**************)

Gary's Electrivire was taken down in 1 hit by Saturn's Toxicroak. That says a lot.

Even though Gary isn’t really a trainer anymore he still has some skills and I doubt he just lets his Pokemon sit around all of the time without a little bit of training. Anyway, if it is a pointless comparison then you don’t need to be on this thread.

On the contrary, near the end of DP Paul has been shown to show some concern and gratitude to his Pokemon. He thanked Electavire twice during the battle when it took out Gliscor (without taking any damage at all) and even with it lost to Infernape.

Gary’s Electavire blocked a Dark Pulse that was shot out of nowhere from Toxicroak remember? It made it take a knee to the ground either from taking too much damage or the flinching side effect. Then Poison Jab finished the job but it was off guard because it was trying to attack the Golbat or was it Salamence?? I forgot but Gary commanded a Thunder on one of them.

I don't think we saw enough of Gary's to make an educated choice, but i'm going to say Paul's from what we saw.

Picture Ash's Pikachu beating Regice..... then tieing with an Elekid.... what was that thing called that the writers did to show the opposing side as a much stronger foe? They needed to make Gary lose.

I'm not to sure on who would win. My guess is Paul's based on its current moveset. Both have Motor Drive, so only Gary's Electivire can use Iron Tail, while Paul's can use Brick Break & Giga Impact.

I haven't seen Gary's elecivire in much action, so I really can't say...

Gary's Electivire didn't have enough screentime to make a decision, but I'll go with Paul's. Paul is still training as a trainer, while Gary is searching fossils. Sure, he might train it from time to time, but he can't keep up with Paul's Electivire level.

The thing was still standing after taking a Blaze Powered Flare Blitz even after it exploded!

Gary's seems to be more jolly and friendly while Paul's takes after him but both it and Paul have shown to have a calmer side to their personalities. After all, Pokemon take after their trainers.

Gary's one is so weak :/
There's no contest, Paul's Electivire is by far better. Plus, I loved the rivalry between it and Ash's Infernape.

I would say Paul's because of its moveset and track record. Since Thunder and Thunderpunch are useless in this battle, Paul's Electivire's Brick Break would do neutral damage, while Gary's Electivire's Iron Tail would deal little damage.

I also think Paul's Electivire's Thunder on the ground technique would come in handy. Gary's Electivire may be able to jump into the air, but Paul's could just use its tail to send rocks flying its way.

We do not know all of Gary's Electivire attacks. It is not a real match until we know what other attacks it knows. It might know some strong moves like Earthquake and Rock Tomb. The Rock Tomb can slow down Paul's Electivire and then Earthquake will knock it out.

I see what you are saying but Iron Tail lowers Defense that makes it more powerful with each hit but Brick Break is a Fighting type move that weakens Steel type moves if they collide which is what I think happens when Pikachu and Elekid/Electavire had their Iron Tail/Brick Break collisions. However, it has been shown that the Pokemon in the show only have 4 moves and if Gary and Paul were to battle with their Electavires with their CURRENT move sets it would be this;

Paul-Protect, Thunder, Thunderpunch, Brick Break
Gary-Protect, Thunder, Thunderpunch, Iron Tail

It is possible that Gary and Paul had switched their move sets off-screen like Paul’s knew Light Screen probably just for the full battle and Giga Impact was replaced with Brick Break for the full battle with Ash knowing that Giga Impact requires recharge time that isn’t something Paul could afford in a battle with Ash though it didn’t have to recharge against Barry’s Empoleon.

Earthquake would end the match in one move, but remember that the anime frowns upon the move so it is rarely used. Rock Tomb could be smashed with Iron Tail or Brick Break. Even if Gary’s jumps in the air to avoid a move Thunder on the field would be effective but remember Protect would come in handy.
