I'm just gonna put it out there: Paul has yet to do anything villainous, but do you think he could be a school-age sociopath?

Yes, Paul's a sociopath all right. He's a good trainer yet he doesn't treat his Pokemon fairly.

He's James's meaner altar-ego I hear.

What kind of Pokemon trainer constantly refuses to battle?

I'd hate to think how all his Pokemon got their battling experience @_@

Hunter J is closer to the definition of a sociopath.

so·ci·o·path
   /ˈsoʊsiəˌpæθ, ˈsoʊʃi-/ Show Spelled[soh-see-uh-path, soh-shee-] Show IPA
–nounPsychiatry.
a person, as a psychopathic personality, whose behavior is antisocial and who lacks a sense of moral responsibility or social conscience.

Paul has some morals. They are a bit skewed, but they are there. Hunter J has none; all she cares about is whether or not she gets paid. Although they both rank pretty high on the antisocial behavior meter.

Paul may not be social, but he isnt evil, he cares about Ash and Pokemon, too (shown on DP 163.) He just has a lot to learn.

He just wants to be the "very best", and get there in the shortest amount of time possible. I wouldn't blame him

The Paul vs Brandon episode has the answer IMO. When Brandon asks Reggie what's the source of his strenght (something to that effect), Paul assumed that in order to be strong, he had to be like what Brandon was, which is somebody who's cold and uncaring towards an opponent and someone who could sweep all of the opponents pokemon.

He just wants to be strong and sees emotions and caring about his pokemon as a weakness... which is why ash will defeat him in the League, in order to show him that caring about your pokemon and trusting them can make them strong.

No, Paul's actions are explained in that one episode in Snowpoint where we find out he wants to be the very best like no one ever was because his brother wasn't. Also he was abandoned by his mafia ruling father.

Oh wait, wrong Silver counterpart.

10kth post.

How many of you would consider him a male version/counterpart of Haruhi?

I wouldn't say sociopath, he's got some metal issues, but he's not evil like J is. However, he is sadistic, look at the full battle. Yes, Pokemon normally get hurt in battle, but afterwards they're fine, Paul seemed to purposely hurt Ash's pokemon, and be glad he did. He trains his pokemon to be as uncaring as he is. I think most Pokemon hold back in battle so they don't seriously hurt each other, Paul's don't because of his personality and how he raises them. The only one that doesn't seem to be uncaring is his Torterra, probably because he was Paul's pokemon before he turned into an antisocial jerk and when he idolized Reggie.

He had a troubled past, he did not want to grow up weak like his brother.

So he sees in Ash what he could have become (perceived weak trainer and person).

I wouldn’t think of Paul as a sociopath, I feel that title belongs to someone like hunter J or Sabrina (before Haunter made her laugh and made her go back to her normal self). Paul is more of the loner and antisocial type, and I can relate to him. He wants to find his own path to become what his brother could not. Though his own path isn’t made quite clear because I think that he has forgotten it himself. I just think that he is doing everything in his power to not be like his brother.

I mean he is just looking for the best of the best Pokemon to help him become a great trainer (or in the case of most trainers the best trainer). He feels that bonding with people or pokemon will just make him weak so he refuses to do so. When I say I relate to him I am referring to studying and working ahead all of the time, and Paul training and battling hard all of the time to increase his skills.

I think the final bout with Ash will clear the crust in his eyes so he can finally see the truth. When I think about it he was acting like Brandon a bit because at times he is a bit harsh such as when he first met Ash and the group, he saved them but then talked to Ash like he was a kid (but if you look at the episode closely you see Ash acting a bit more childish and stupid than usual). Paul saved the group from the wild Urasring and then caught it (not to mention saving Ash from the illusions from a group of Stantler), and of course called Ash pathetic for keeping Turtwig along with him losing at the end of the episode to Chimchar.
