AUTHOR'S NOTE: After the release of Pokémon Legends: Z-A, I've always headcanoned Team MZ as a poly ship. I've been wanting to write something about that for a while now, and I figured a Wikipedia-esque article would work best, so here you are! Hope you enjoy!
I'd like to thank dragons_tree over on AO3 for beta reading this. Much appreciated.

Paxton Megania Tranmetsewlive (born March 2, 2008) is a Kalosian Pokémon Trainer who is the 175th and current Champion of the Kalos region. As Kalos Champion he is best known as the consecutive victor of the 49th, 50th and 51st Pokémon World Tournaments. He is also an interregional LGBTQ+ rights activist and the founder of the Interregional Polyamory Forum (IPF), considered the world's leading polyamory rights organisation. He is widely considered a trailblazer among polyamorous individuals and the father of the modern polyamory rights movement.
Born and raised in Mesagoza, Paldea, Paxton first came to public attention when, whilst on a holiday to Lumiose City, Kalos in 2025, he was recruited by his future wife Taunie as part of Team MZ, a clique founded by Taunie and mutual friends Naveen and Lida to combat the Rogue Mega Evolution phenomenon that was plaguing Lumiose City at the time. His success in quelling the threat and defeating the villainous Rust Syndicate and Ange Floette, along with catching the legendary Pokémon Zygarde, made him and his friends celebrities in Lumiose. After returning to Paldea Paxton kept in contact with his Team MZ comrades and eventually moved to Lumiose in 2028 to live with them.
He formally began his Pokémon journey in 2030, aiming to take on Kalos's gym circuit and become the region's Champion. After eight months' worth of travelling alongside his friends and having collected all eight Kalos gym badges, Paxton battled and defeated Champion Serena Yvonne to become Champion of the Kalos region. During this time he first acknowledged his polyamorous romantic and sexual views, but it took slightly longer to accept. After he formally entered into his relationship with his then-boyfriend and girlfriends, he established the IPF in 2033 to advocate for the rights of the polyamorous community. His most notable Pokémon-related feat was his three consecutive victories in the annual Pokémon World Tournament between 2040 and 2042, a feat which catapulted him to interregional stardom and earned him a spot in the Global Trainer Hall of Fame.
With a battle record of 5,467 victories, 256 losses and 37 draws, Paxton is widely considered by many sources to be Kalos's greatest Champion yet. He was also named a Hero of the Rainbow by the Interregional Queer Association in 2041 for his work on polyamorous rights. He currently resides in Lumiose City alongside his husband, wives and children. Outside of Pokémon training and his LGBTQ+ activism, he is also the author of several children's books and the MZ Quartet's joint autobiography, Four Stars of Kalos (2044).

Early life and education
Paxton Tranmetsewlive was born on March 2, 2008 as Paxton Tranquil in Mesagoza, Paldea, the son of Stillo Tranquil, a tour guide at the Paldea Regional Museum, and Husha Tranquil, one of Gym Leader Katy's Gym Trainers. He is the middle of three children, preceded by his twin sister Harmony and followed by his younger brother Quito. He was educated at the prestigious Naranja Academy, where many of his teachers described him as a bright young student. Interestingly, he did not show much interest in Pokémon battles during his education. During his Treasure Hunt in 2023 he got to meet Kalos Champion Serena Yvonne whilst she was touring the world, and after the encounter he decided to visit Lumiose City to experience Kalos for himself.
Trip to Lumiose and early career
After Paxton graduated in 2024 he organised a holiday to Lumiose City, arriving on October 16, 2025. At the time Lumiose City was undergoing redevelopment by the construction company Quasartico Inc., aiming to create a city where people and Pokémon alike could live in harmony together. Shortly after his arrival he met a local Trainer by the name of Taunie Metro, and, after an incident involving his bag being stolen, discovered a natural talent for Pokémon battling. Shortly afterwards he was invited by her to join Team MZ, a clique of Trainers established by Taunie and her two friends Naveen Sewham and Lida Stalive to combat the Rogue Mega Evolution crisis that was plaguing Lumiose City at the time. Paxton accepted and would assist in driving back the crisis for the duration of his holiday.
Paxton also took part in the nightly Z-A Royale set up by Quasartico Inc. to find the strongest user of Mega Evolution in the city, and he credits the unique, surprising nature of the royale with the development of his fast-paced, aggressive battling style. He also came into conflict with the villainous Rust Syndicate during his holiday, and after AZ's Floette fused with the Prism Tower to become Ange Floette, Paxton joined forces with the legendary Pokémon Zygarde to defeat it, for which he was given a Medal of Honour by the city's mayor Anjou Zookou for his deeds, and the events also made him a celebrity in Lumiose (and to a lesser extent the rest of the world).
After the end of his holiday Paxton returned to Paldea in November 2025, but he kept in close contact with his Lumiose friends. He took up his first job as a battle coach in Mesagoza in 2026, notably tutoring Hespero Scarlet, daughter of Paldea Champion Nemona Alegria-Scarlet. He took time to visit Taunie, Naveen and Lida in Lumiose regularly and often found himself longing for them, which Paxton acknowledges in Four Stars of Kalos as the beginning of his polyamorous awakening. Eventually he made the decision to permanently move to Lumiose City in 2028, moving into an apartment in the city's suburbs together with his friends. There he continued his role as a battle coach and also took up a side job as a model for Naveen's fashion business, which began to bloom around this time.
Becoming Kalos Champion
In January 2030 Paxton set off on his proper Pokémon journey, traversing the Kalosian gym circuit with the aim of becoming Champion of Kalos. His journey took eight months, during which he managed to defeat all eight of Kalos's Gym leaders on his first try, although he has gone on record to admit that his victory over the Shalour City Gym Leader was down to "pure stupid luck". He returned to Lumiose City in August 2030, and on the morning of the 13th he undertook his battles with the Elite Four. After defeating them he challenged Champion Serena in the afternoon. After a dynamic struggle that lasted a full hour and with five of six Pokémon fainted, Paxton successfully defeated Serena to become Kalos's 175th Champion since the foundation of the Kalos Pokémon League in 1831. His coronation ceremony took place the following day and was watched by around 55 million people, making it one of the most televised events in Kalos history.
Along his journey Paxton was accompanied by Taunie, Naveen and Lida. Paxton has stated that the moral support they provided was instrumental in his success.
Career as Kalos Champion
After his coronation as Kalos Champion Paxton's unique battling style, mixing speed with power, earned him the nickname "The Lightning Bruiser", as he could resolve battles in minutes if circumstances went right for him. This was most notably demonstrated in his first match against Champion Ethan of Johto in 2035, where he managed to defeat all six of Ethan's Pokémon in a matter of five minutes. The so-called "Five Minute Fight" has become one of the most famous battles in the history of the Pokémon World Tournament.
During his early Champion career he ordered a series of redevelopment programs across Kalos, akin to the one in Lumiose, to harmonise the region and turn its cities into places shared by people and Pokémon alike. He oversaw many of these projects himself and was not afraid to make the slightest changes, even if it meant delays. Although the redevelopment programs initially proved controversial, many Kalosians now see them as a net benefit to both the local Pokémon and the region as a whole.
He also made the decision in 2034 to scrap the rigid order that the Kalos gyms must be challenged in and allow them to be challenged in any order, inspired by the system employed by the Paldea League. He has advocated for other regions to scrap the rigid gym battling order as he sees the Paldean system as more flexible and accommodating of Trainers with potential mobility issues.
Paxton first competed in the Pokémon World Tournament in 2031, where he scored in fourth place. His subsequent performances would improve and he won the event for the first time in 2034, earning a cash prize of Ꝑ600,000 which he donated to the Interregional Queer Association. He is most famous, however, for his three consecutive victories in the 2040, 2041 and 2042 events, a feat that he considers the highlight of his career as Champion, and he also won the 2045, 2047 and 2049 events.
He is also widely beloved throughout Kalos for his happy, joyful personality and his compassion, love and generosity - many Lumiose citizens have recounted stories where they got into trouble or injured themselves, and Paxton wasted no time rushing over and asking if they were okay or helping them out. His husband and wives have gone on record stating that he is "like if compassion, love and generosity were a living being" and that this aspect of his personality is the most important thing they love about him.
LGBTQ+ advocacy
It was during his Pokémon journey that Paxton first realised that his close friendship with Taunie, Naveen and Lida had developed into love. At first he was panicked over this since, in his words, although his heart wanted to love and cherish all three of them equally his mind felt they would be disgusted at the thought of sharing them like 'some sort of cult leader', and the prejudice against polyamorous relationships widespread at the time did not help. However during his first Pokémon World Tournament in 2031 he met Galar Champion Gloria Sword and her wife Marnie Maple-Sword, who introduced him to the term "polyamorous" and became some of his closest friends outside Team MZ. It was with the help of their wisdom that Paxton came to accept his polyamorous orientation.
Shortly after he began dating his then-boyfriend and girlfriends, the MZ quadruple organised a press conference on September 2nd, 2032 where they formally came out as polyamorous to the world. The declaration was met with shock through Kalos, and public opinion of the relationship was split between those who were supportive and those who firmly opposed what they saw as an "unnatural relationship". Although Paxton considered walking back upon seeing the discourse, the encouragement of his partners reignited his resolve and with the help of their love and support he stood firm against discriminatory messages and practices during the following months. He also took up the cause of fighting for LGBTQ+ rights worldwide: providing funding to establish LGBTQ+ safe havens, hosting events in support of the cause, providing support to the victims of discrimination and most notably hosting the podcast The Polyamorous Experience, where he talked about his experiences as a polyamorous person. In addition, in 2033 he used part of his Champion salary to establish the Interregional Polyamory Forum (IPF), an organisation dedicated to the advocacy of polyamory rights worldwide. He is also the designer of the current polyamorous pride flag, first revealed to the world in 2035.
Although Paxton's polyamorous relationship was initially met with much hostility from certain sectors of the Kalosian political spectrum, his defiance in the face of discrimination, his willing to talk about and discuss the topic with those who questioned it, his relationship serving as a demonstration that polyamorous relationships could be happy and healthy, and his prestigious status as Champion eventually swayed Kalosian public opinion with a rapidity that surprised many observers worldwide, and public support for the legalisation of polyamorous relationships increased from around 18% in September 2032 to around 64% in November 2035. And on January 1st, 2036, Paxton saw one of his life's greatest dreams realised when the Kalos Pokémon League's central committee passed the Polyamorous Marriage Act 2036, legalising consensual polyamorous marriages between three or more people.
Paxton would step down as the IPF's head in 2038 to focus on raising his family, but he has continued to advocate for LGBTQ+ rights worldwide, and his influence was instrumental in the legalisation of consensual polyamorous marriage in the other Western regions - Galar in 2037, Unova and Paldea in 2039 and Alola in 2040.
Personal life
On July 3rd, 2032, Paxton took Taunie, Naveen and Lida on a friendly outing around Lumiose, culminating with meeting up at the train station where he and Taunie first met. There Paxton confessed his joint love to the three of them and stated that if they did not love him back that was fine. But, to his surprise and utter euphoria, Taunie, Naveen and Lida all reciprocated, stating that they had come to love each other too after much soul-searching. After a teary-eyed group hug, they formally began dating as a quadruple soon afterward. Paxton has described the moment as "the happiest coincidence in all of history" in Four Stars of Kalos.
The MZ quadruple were all interviewed on The Serena Yvonne Show in 2035, where they discussed the benefits and drawbacks of a large polyamorous relationship. Paxton stated that the first year was the hardest and there were several moments it felt like the relationship would fall apart, but by the end of the first year he knew in his heart that Taunie, Naveen and Lida were his soulmates and he wanted nothing more than to spend the rest of his life with them.
After four years of dating, Paxton proposed to his partners on July 3rd, 2036, and six months later Paxton, Taunie, Naveen and Lida were married in a lavish ceremony, taking the surname "Tranmetsewlive", derived from a mashup of their previous surnames. The family currently lives in Lumiose City alongside their five children: Seine and Loire, adopted on May 7th 2038, and their three biological children Naissa, Vie and Mort, born on November 8th, 2040. Naissa, Vie and Mort were some of the first children conceived using gene-splice reproductive technology to insert genes from all four of the MZ quartet, meaning all four adults are the children's parents.
In Four Stars of Kalos Paxton has described his relationship with his partners as being "a symphony of one person cleaved into four, joined by heart, mind, dreams and soul", and has credited this as the reason his polyamorous relationship has survived so long.
Legacy and recognition
Despite the fact he wasn't born in Kalos, Paxton is widely considered to be Kalos's greatest Champion - in the 2045 ranking of Kalos Champions prepared by the International Battler's Forum, Paxton is ranked in first place and has been so in every ranking since. As of late November 2046, his current official battle record stands at 5,467 victories, 256 losses and 37 draws. For his consecutive victories in the Pokémon World Tournament he was awarded a platinum star on the Global Trainer Hall of Fame in 2042. The Paxton battling style, known for its fast pace and rapid-fire attacking, is named after him.
Paxton, his husband and wives were jointly named as Heroes of the Rainbow in 2037 by the Interregional Queer Association for "his work in bringing polyamory out of the shadow of seedy cults and into the open". The Paxton Tranmetsewlive Fund, used for the support of pride events, was named in his honour.
