Looks like preparation for Iran's nuke facilities as the article says. Or possibly North Korean Nuke Facilities. Although my bet is that we will be using them to take out Iran's deeply hidden nuke facilities.
 
Usually this would be a secret or it's already been developed. XP

And why are we still in a Cold War posture? Shouldn't we be concentrating on insurgencies instead? :p
 
My problem is the publicity of the announcement...
But otherwise It allows us to really have a way of dealing with the Nuclear Facilities. ^^ The fact NK is testing missles that could hit Hawaii is frightening... Afterall that is a US State. Iran has only recently started testing. Overall NK is a threat because their Leader is BEYOND insane. (What do you call the switching between threats and diplomacy? PICK ONE SMART GUY. -_-)

For why they announced it publicly, it was tucked away inside of a Urgent Budget Request by the Pentagon. Some one with WAY too much time on their hand probably found it and that made it to the press.

As for why we developed them, we have had these types of bombs for a very long time, the one being request from the Pentagon I heard about all the way back in 2003 in the lead up to the invasion of Iraq. And really while we're dealing with insurgencies, we do need to focus on the continued development of better equipment, you never know when you will need it. Such as now with Iran.
 
I hope this does not actually have to be used... But if necessary I will stand by it. Unless used for the wrong purpose... D:
 
hrm, im really worried about north korea, ther secrecy scares me... i bet they either are gonna start a war or they have some nuclear weapon ready or something :(

i plan to go cosplaying as north italy this summer. my frend is gonna be germany if i go! oh, sorry i got off topic... hmmm, i wonder what other secrets our governmant keeps from us. after all, i thought we lived in a democracy (or something like it). why does the government keep so many dang secrets?!

Sometimes if the American People know to much that is not a good thing. (Mainly I would imagine word would spread to enemy forces through traitors and thus they will prepare for whatever we would throw at them and hit back very hard) Unless the Enemy knowing about stuff like that is a good thing to you... D:

Technically they are not keeping secrets in this, it is a open document requesting the bombs. Just hidden away inside many other requests so to not arouse suspicion.

Truth is this is a very sensitive time in Iran's negotiations. Israel is planning to attack by December, and Russia is taking a more hardened stance. The State Department and to a extent the President need to be shown believing that they can still give negotiations a chance. If we are seen gearing up to strike, the rest of the world will rightly assume there is little chance of success.

Which is why things like this need to be secret, we need to be seen as open to negotiation as possible until the last moment. If that fails, then we start dropping bunker busters.
 
The just want to scare them or inform us this explosion might be deadlier then though, kill half the people in a city and start a world war 3. Yep.
 
How come the US is allowed to create WOMD's but other countries such as Iran, North Korea cannot?
 
This is either extreme overconfidence or a bizarre strategy. I'm thinking more of the former.

Because those 2 are rogue nations. They would only use soemthing like that badly. The US actually has a good moral foundation. We would not use them in the wrong way. Nations that are not rogue are generally allowed to have a few WOMD.

Well, I don't know about that, but I'll admit that the US having these bombs is better than North Korea and Iran, although the best would be that no one had these I guess.
