I thought it was pretty boring, myself. What was with the panning shots of game locations? Show us something unique!

It seems to break a number of traditions. The twinkling sound of the Game Freak logo seems to be missing. Both player characters are shown, instead of just one. All the starters are seen.

Of course... it's possible that the full opening sequence used both screens and we're seeing only part of it.

As for the overhead pan shots... I think that's meant to show off the 3D engine.

Wasn't it missing in Emerald too?

I don't know what I was expecting, but the 3-dness is pretty cool I guess. Nice hat, guy trainer, hahahaha!
