I have read a lot on this website about how the battle was pretty lame. I know that the series is different from the game, but the battle was a bad way to end the BF series.

Iron Tail is super-effective, but it could not reduce Regice’s defense stats because of its Clear Body ability. Not to mention, that Rest recovered all of its energy. Also it was paralyzed by Thunderbolt, but got rid of it with Rest.

Pikachu took a Focus Punch, Ice Beam, Blizzard (I don’t really know if Pikachu actually took direct damage from the attack but it did do some damage), and don’t forget the recoil it took from using Volt Tackle on a fully healed Regice. It took a Volt Tackle and was declared unable to battle, but really it was difficult to tell if it was really down for the count.

If it was beaten and unable to continue I would only say it was knocked out because it hit the wall so hard from the impact of Volt Tackle.

So, who thinks that the only reason Pikachu’s Volt Tackle won was because the writers just wanted to end the series with the new move that it learned?

I think the writers wanted Ash to win the third battle against Brandon because they wanted to show how much Ash's skills have improved since his first battle against Brandon (when Ash was possessed by the King of Pokelantis)

It was, Kanto starters never should have been near this battle and Pikachu defeating a Regice all on his own... Give me a break. I like the way the writers had done in against Drake in OI which is to have most of Ash's pokémon be necessary to defeat Dragonite.

Replace Charizard by Torkoal, Bulbasaur by Sceptile and Squirtle by Corphish, polish a little bit a lot the writing and pacing of the battle and it could have been a great battle.

I kind of agree with you here but that Regice had virtually no battle experience prior to battling against Pikachu. Pikachu however had quite alot and I think the battle was well handled. Pikachu gained strong attacks and ending the battle with Volt Tackle was really good in my opinion.

That and throw Regirock and Registeel into the mix. The problem Ash faced in his first two matches against Brandon (aside from the whole "possessed by an evil centuries-old spirit" ordeal) was that Brandon was using two well-trained, powerful Pokémon. Then Ash beats him when he switches over to run-of-the-mill Pokémon and a Regice he had just caught. Um, go Ash?

Also Corphish should have evolved at some point.

Ah, that was a nice touch by some of you. Pointing out how Regice was just caught and did not have the experience that Regirock/Registeel had. However, it would still be too much of a match for just one Pikachu. I mean if it had a Light Ball then if it won the match would make more sense.

I was like really young when the series first came on. Now that I’m older, I can look at it more critically and take things apart to see things from a different viewpoint.

That's what most of us do. Its also fun to rewatch all the episodes to realize things you didn't the first time.
