Plot hole in "Mastermind"...

I'm sure someone mentioned this before, but does anyone think it's odd that Dr Yung knew of Mewtwo? I mean, the end of Mewtwo Returns implies that everyone except Ash&co and JJ&M has had their memories erased of Mewtwo. And yet, this guy seems to act like Mewtwo is a pretty commonly known Pokemon ("This isn't the Mewtwo you're used to" or something to that effect.)

The natural theory is that Mewtwo popped up off-camera while Pikachu's memory was being examined; but this explanation has one flaw. See, if Mewtwo showed up, how would he know what a Mewtwo was? The name alone is hard to pull a reasonable explanation for. And how would he know that Mewtwo would be some kind of all-powerful Pokemon worthy of miraging, as opposed to something like Celebi or another Mew?

So the question becomes, if Yung knows of Mewtwo, then obviously the real Mewtwo's secret is a bit screwed - and wouldn't that mean that erasing Giovanni's memory of Mewtwo is a bit pointless? Even if Mewtwo is a well-kept secret of the scientific community, I still feel like the boss of Team Rocket would have ways of figuring it out.

So, is it just a gaping plot hole, or is it something else?

All the rockets on-sight in MR lost their memories, as did the three trainers and Joy in MSB. However, the researchers didn't. 'Course most of them were killed in that explosion but I'm sure some of the developers know about it.

There's already a plot hole involving Bill. He's got a picture of Mewtwo on his manor door. Maybe Bill and Yung were early-stage researchers on the project at some point, who just happened to not be there the day Mewtwo destroyed the lab.

I've just seen the section in question and the thing that stikes me is how can Pikachu remember some of those particular scenes? The Celebi one is 40 years in the past!

EDIT: Right. Getting the password gives him access to everything including the labs of Oak/Elm/Birch and all Pokémon Centers. Therefore, it stands to reason that one place must have the info on Mewtwo. I don't know if he can get into the technology at New Island, but some of the development information must somewhere.

EDIT 2: "This is not the same Mewtwo that you're all familiar with." Ok, that I don't get. For one thing, May and Professor Oak have never met it.

I was honestly wondering how long it'd take for this to pop up on the radar and get someone to post.

If they wanted to, the Celebi bit would have been a great place to play with Sammy = Professor Oak.

That's not the only plot hole. Misty recognized Mew, when she had her memory erased.

Ash/May/Max/Brock remembered Mew because this takes place after the 8th movie where they see it again. Misty wasn't there however, yet she somehow remembers it. PLOT HOLE!

I remember reading somewhere that there's a theory that Bill used to work for TR due to the door and he's like in the background of a TR deck card. It's entirely possible that they both worked on Mewtwo. I mean there was more cotinuity in this special than in most of the AG

Better yet, how did Yung know of Mew, the source of his so called "flawed" program, even before he ever got his hands on Pika? To everyone except a few people, it is nothing more than a legend. Again, he would have to have some connection to the original Mewtwo project and got away with the data on Mew's DNA.

But in MR, twerps keep their memories about Mewtwo.

Well, their memories could come back when they saw Mewtwo in MR; also when misty saw Mew.

Well, Mewtwo could have existed BEFORE, and be the "legendary rival" of Mew, like Groudon/Kyogre ;-)

Also, the whole thing with Mewtwo took place outside of the castle, where the mirage Pokémon couldn't possibly exist.

You mst of missed the part with the rockets that let the Mirage Pokemon exist in their range. Of course, that that was completely ridiculous, but whatever.
