I am playing Pokemon Diamond and it is the first Pokemon game I have played. It is a lot of fun, thus far, and it is clear why the series is as popular as it is.

Although, I have a question about capturing a specific Pokemon that has given me some trouble. I was trying to capture Onix in the mines and got his health down pretty far and used a regular pokeball. It almost worked, but then he escaped. Well, I tried several more regular pokeballs and a great pokeball, but none of them worked. I then proceeded to get his health down to almost nothing and tried again and it still wouldn't work.

I would have tried a Dusk Pokeball, but I don't have any and am not sure where to buy them. Also, if you fail once, is it unlikely you will succeed at all if you try again, even after dropping the health more?

Well, putting it to sleep would help.

A Pokemon's difficulty in capture is directly related to the Defense stat. So an Onix has a very high defense stat and thus is difficult to catch. Using a move like Screech to lower its defense, and throwing the Pokeball while having a Pokemon with a high defense out will help.

But when it comes to legendaries and the like, many times you just have to keep throwing until the random chance lets it stay in.

If I recall correctly, you can buy the Dusk Pokeball in the various shops. I believe there are two people in every shop, one that sells regular items (potions, poke-ball, great ball, and healing items) and one that sells three special capturing items which includes the dusk ball.

Onix has always been a semi-tough capture with just a regular Pokeball, and you'd probably have better luck putting it to sleep or paralyzing first.

With certain Pokemon it really depends. Sometimes when you keep trying to capture them and lower their health slowly, they'll sometimes be even more difficult to catch. However the Timer Ball is something that can help in that aspect as the chance of trying to capture a Pokemon increases with each round of the battle.

Hopefully this helps.
