Pokeathlons as a goal?

Generation 4 introduced us to a unique series of minigames in the Gold and Silver remakes, known as Pokeathlons. We saw this in the episode, A Marathon Rivalry, though how well could this have held up as an alternative goal to the badge quest? As of now, we have the gyms, contests, and showcases. Do you think that Pokeathlons could have made a viable goal for characters, if they expanded on it? Its obviously too late to return to the Pokeathlons, unless they become relevant again someday, but do you still think it could be something worth exploring?

I think this definitely could have been a cool goal for a trainer, and it would have been a good way to incorporate athletics into the anime. There would be a lot of interesting training opportunities and obviously many great ways for the trainer to bond with their Pokemon. It would also incorporate different strategies and the trainer could be interested in different aspects when catching Pokemon. I could a Pokeathlon trainer having a pretty cool character. The biggest issue I would see with this would be that competitions may get a bit repetitive since they are mostly the same (although I still think it would be far more interesting and have more variety than showcases). As you stated, probably too late to happen, but it would have been pretty interesting to say the least.

Yes, definitely. I'm still rooting for a girl companion to have an expanded version of this as her goal - there's so much that could be done with it!

We shall have to see what Gen 7 throws up...

They could get a bit repetitive yeah, though if I recall, there are 10 events and usually only 3 are chosen. They could have set it up that way, and even added more more events. They could have done something like win 5 medals and you can compete in the big competition, maybe even call it the Pokemon/(Region Name) Olympiad, at the end of the series.

It'd still be nice to explore something that never really got its due in the anime. Hell, I think even the manga focused more on the Pokeathlon.
