a.k.a. something only a nerd with too much time on their hands would care about.
Remakes tend to re-use Pokédex entries from the original games:
In FireRed, all the Pokédex entries for the Kanto Pokémon came from the Japanese Red and Green games. The Pokédex entries for the Johto Pokémon came from Pokémon Silver.
In LeafGreen, the Kanto Pokémon dex entries came from the Japanese Pokémon Blue game, which was also used in the English Red and Blue games, and the Johto Pokémon dex entries came from Pokémon Gold.
In HeartGold and SoulSilver, all the Kanto and Johto Pokémon had their entries re-used from Gold and Silver, respectively. Unlike what happened with Johto Pokémon in FR/LG, in HG/SS all the Hoenn Pokémon got new Pokédex entries (although they were generally just re-worded versions of older Pokédex entries, so they weren't all that new...)
In X and Y, all 650-something Pokémon from the first 5 generations have their Pokédex entries recycled from old games. For example, Treecko's dex entry in X is the same as in FR/LG, and its dex entry in Y is the same as in HG/SS. Mudkip's dex entry in X is from FR/LG but its Y dex entry is from D/P/Pt. To compare, Chimchar's dex entry in X is recycled from Pearl while its Y entry is recycled from HG/SS. It's Platnium dex entry was already re-used in BW and B2W2, so it's Diamond dex entry is the only one that hasn't been re-used yet.
Question is, will we get more new dex entries in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire? I assume the Hoenn Pokémon will have their dex entries recycled from Ruby and Sapphire, and the Kalos Pokémon basically need new dex entries since they only have 2 so far, but we don't know about all the rest. Game Freak seems to shy away from making new entries nowadays.
