So, what do you guys think this will actually be used for?

Personally, I don't want it to be used for trainer rematches, I'd rather have the Vs. Seeker for that, and Bill's automated PC calls really aren't useful for the current interface.

The way I see it, the phone could be used for Gym Leaders to call you when they want rematches. Also, as far as I can tell, they only had 4 apps on the Pokegear menu (perhaps they let you scroll the bottom part to see the other cards). Anyway, the phone system would be good for the daycare couple. They can call you if your Pokemon has an egg, or you can call them to check your Pokemon's status. What would be nice though is if you could have options on what they'd call you for, like a call if your Pokemon hits a specific level that you want or whatever.
 
I really hope they bring the VS seeker back.

The phone could be used by Prof. Elm, Prof. Oak and Mom. I also like the idea of the Gym Leaders calling you for rematches and the Day Care couple calling you whenever your Pokemon grow a level or they find an egg.

I don't really see them using it for much more than that though
 
What do I think it'll be used for? The same things it was in GSC. Mom calling you, Mr. Pokemon calling you, trainers calling you, etc. The only thing they'd remove is Bill calling you to change your boxes.

What'd be nice is if you could call trainers for rematches. It felt pretty pointless to call them in the old games, when you don't have any sort of relationship beyond them telling you about their Rattata or Metapod. I'd like to see something come of that. Even if you don't have rematches, having individual relationships (even something as simple as a friendship score) would make things interesting and give you a reason to call them, too.
 
I think that combining the phone and the vs seeker is a good way to go. You get calls from the important NPC's, but in turn can call trainers an request battles (they can do the same)
 
I wanna be able to call my Wi-Fi Friends while playing the game, but of course that probably won't happen. :p

I was just about to say exactly that. They should combine the two together so we can have the best parts of both. HGSS wouldn't feel right without having the calls, and people calling who want to give you stuff like stones.
 
Just as long as the phone can hold up as many possible trainers as it did in Emerald with the match call.

Because it would be annoying if you can only have like 10 or 20 phone entries,

I like the idea of the vs seeker and the phone being mixed, maybe make it so you have to wait 100 steps before using the phone again (for vs seeker purposes), and it could be like the vs seeker in that they'll most likely ask for a battle. Or if not they could say "Sorry, I'm busy right now, call back again later"

Of course if that happens, so much for standing next to them because remember what happened when you tried to call someone who was only a few steps away? "Just go up and talk to them"

Or maybe they'll actually make the vs seeker different than the phone, and the phone is primarily for gym leaders, and for NPC's that give stuff, or swarming Pokemon NPCs.

The stones were Crystal-exclusive I believe.
 
Items and Swarms would be the primary uses, I'd imagine. Though I actually don't see what's wrong with having the old rematch system in addition to a Vs. Seeker - you could get a rematch with any random Trainer (whose Pokémon would level up and evolve like before) with the Seeker, but there would be some special trainers who call for rematches, who might also add to their teams, change what Pokémon they use, and maybe even get more diversified teams and eventually become strong at the level of your rival. I'd love to see more than just one or two Trainers that are really a match for you at the end of the game.
 
I don't want the day-care lady to ring me everytime my pokemon grows a level. Even if there's around 1000 exp. points to the next level, that's not a whole lot of steps if I'm searching some long grass for a few pokemon I want to catch. Besides, I leave my Ditto in there nearly full time because I'm cruel and just love eggs. Every, say, 2 levels perhaps but nothing too regular.
 
I don't really see why everyone wants Vs Seeker all of sudden. Yes, it was more convenient. But the Pokegear Phone is the real symbol of GSC. And it's practically confirmed that it WILL be used for trainer rematches. And I really don't see VS Seeker and Pokegear phone co-existing. At all.

Also, on a side note, it's now confirmed (on the screen) that Oak gives the player his phone number as well. Wonder what will be its purpose...

And I said that like a month ago. Calling for rematches instead of just waiting for a trainer to have the like to would be awesome. My idea is that the phone must have a menu for each person in the agenda along these lines:

-Call
-Challenge
-Delete
-Cancel

Or something like that, similar to the Trainer's Eyes (was that the name? I don't remember well) from Emerald.

They shouldn't remove the rematch option from the phone (at least they should keep it as it was), because if the option is scrapped, then the phone would be boring and useless (Mom doesn't tell you what item she bought, Bill's calls eren't needed anymore and the only Trainer with an interesting chatter is Irwin, and even then, only if you play as the girl).
 
Uses I'd like for the HGSS phone:

*Oak- call him to have your dex evaluated.
*Elm, Buena, and the player's mother- same as G/S/C
*Gym Leader rematches
*Day Care- you get called whenever an egg is made.
*Bill- same as before, except you call him and he tells you how many Pokemon can still be stored overall, and he calls you when your PC is completely filled. And hopefully some other new function.
*all the other trainers with rematches, evolution stones, swarms, and any other Crystal-exclusive features.
 
I just really hope that either the VS Seeker is given away later, or the phone uses the Emerald style PokeNav, where you can hold up to at least 70 (the Nav held 69, but 70 would be a nice even number). I don't like weak low level trainers and I don't like fighting weak low level trainers trying to train for the Elite 4, since the highest level Gym Pokemon was level 40 (Koga laughs at that fail with his Lv 43 Weezing in the 5th Gym).

Gamefreak realized that and used the VS Seeker as a better way to train, and I just hope that they have that or something like it in HGSS. The game looks great, but the challenge would give the game true replay value.

Special events are nice though, rare berries, items, swarms, and rare TMs (Earthquake plz), just give me my good rematches for level grinding too.

Like people have said before, I want to be able to have people call me for items and special events. The day care thing would be nice, but I only want them calling me for an egg. Everytime my poke' levels up would get really old, really fast.

I think it would be best if you called other trainers for rematches though. That would make it easier to train for money/exp when you need it.
 
I really don't see how the phone could be more convenient than the Vs. Seeker. With the Vs. Seeker, you can ask for a rematch against any trainer in the game. If you want to train a low-leveled Pokemon against trainers outside Sandgem (for some reason), you can. If you want to fight the level 50+ trainers in the Battle Area over and over, you can. Why would you ever want to replace this system with one requiring you to go to a different area from the trainer you want to battle, call them, scroll through several lines of dialogue, and then possibly find out they don't want a rematch anyway? This is not to mention having to remember where the trainer you're calling is in the first place and track them down, as well as being limited in which trainers you can fight.

I would envision the phone being kept mostly for receiving special items and whatnot as in Crystal (and calling Mom), then also having a Vs. Seeker-like feature that allows the player to "automatically send nearby trainers they've battled a message asking for a rematch" or something like that. It certainly sounds better than downgrading to the clunky GSC system.

Five or ten levels would be fine with me, but yeah not every level. And it would be nice if they did call and say I have an egg as well since there's no Pokegear app for the Breeding Center, unlike the Poketch.
 
PLEASE GOD LET THE VS SEEKER STILL BE IN.

Its so much more convenient than the phone method.
