Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to Pokémon Academy: Director's Cut!

For those of you who don't already know, this fanfic is called Pokémon Academy, and the story is quite simple. It's about a young, aspiring trainer named Alex who attends an elite Pokémon trainer's school that's sorta like a cross between Hogwarts from Harry Potter and Duel Academy from Yu-Gi-Oh GX.

With better grammar and no plot-holes, I hope you will all enjoy this redux of my previous chapters, after which the story will pick up where it left off.

So, without further ado, let us now begin.

This world is inhabited by wondrous creatures known as Pocket Monsters, or Pokémon for short. Over the many centuries that the Pokémon have inhabited this world, humans have bonded with them in many different ways, but most commonly as Pokémon Trainers. At the age of 10, children are qualified to become official Pokémon Trainers, and accompanied by the starter Pokémon they receive from their region’s resident Pokémon laboratory, they set off on an amazing journey. On this journey, trainers seek out different types of Pokémon, and capture them in a Pokéball. Once captured, these Pokémon bond with their trainers, and are taught to use their powers to their full potential. With these amazing partners, trainers seek out others like themselves, and engage in what are known as Pokémon battles, amazing contests of skill and strength.

From here, trainers choose many different paths in life. Some become breeders to learn how to care for and raise healthy Pokémon. Others become researchers who seek to discover the mysteries of Pokémon. Others become coordinators who show off their Pokémon in dazzling fashion contests. And others choose to battle in the Pokémon League, in the hopes of becoming legendary trainers known as Pokémon Masters. But no matter how humans choose to interact with Pokémon, everyone starts out as a Pokémon trainer.

And in the middle of a southern region known as the Rosary Islands, there is an elite school that teaches young Pokémon trainers to be the best they can be. It is known throughout the world simply as Pokémon Academy.

And this is the story of a very special young boy named Alex, an aspiring young Pokémon trainer who is about to begin his new life at Pokémon Academy.

It was a beautiful sunny September day at the ship port in Olivine City. The sun reflected off of the surface of the water as a flock of Pidgeys flew overhead. Moored at the dock was a huge hovercraft, being boarded by young children wearing white ceremonial cloaks.

One of these children was a young boy named Alex Reed. He stood at the pier, ready to join his fellow classmates. His mother stood behind him, prepared to wish him well, on his journey.......

........and his little sister Millie was clinging to his cloak, bawling her eyes out.

"WAAAAAAAAAAAAH!” wailed Millie. "PLEASE DON'T GO, BIG BROTHER! I DON'T WANT YOU TO GO! WAAAAAAAAAH!"

"Hey, c'mon now, Millie,.” said Alex. "I'm sorry, but I have to leave. The hovercraft's waiting."

"NO, NO, NO, NO, NO!” bawled Millie. "YOU'RE NEVER GONNA COME BACK, AND I'LL NEVER SEE YOU AGAAAAIN!"

At this point, Alex's mother walked over, and gently placed her hands on Millie's shoulders.

"It's all right, Millie. Don’t be sad," she said gently. "Alex isn't going away forever. He's just going away to school for a while. When he's done with school, he'll be back."

Millie stopped wailing, but kept sniffing as tears came out of her eyes."But I'll miss him so much...."

At this point, Alex knelt down and put his arm around Millie. "I know, Sissy. I'll miss you too. But like Mom said, I won't be gone forever. I'm going to a very special school that's gonna teach me to become a great Pokémon trainer. But I promise to e-mail you as often as I can, and I'll come and visit during the holidays."

Millie blinked the tears out of her eyes, smiled, and held out her pinky. "You promise?"

"I promise", said Alex as he interlaced his pinky with hers. “Or I’ll eat a thousand Tamato berries with no water.” Alex hugged Millie tightly, then picked her up as he stood up and faced his mother.

"To be honest, I don't blame Millie for being upset,” said Alex’s mother. “She was only a baby when you first left on your Pokémon journey, and now you're leaving again just when she's old enough to know you. And to be honest, I'm a little broken up, too."

"Aww, Mom...."

"But I'm still so proud of you. To think you've been accepted to the top trainer's school in the country! With the education you'll receive there, who knows how far you'll go as a trainer! It's just too bad your father couldn't come to see you off."

"It can't be helped.” said Alex. "I know he’s busy with work. But he did buy me that sweet laptop as a going-away present, so I’m happy."

"Well, whether he's here or not, I know he's just as proud of you as I am.", said Alex's mother. "Anyway, when you're at the Academy, don't forget to listen to your teachers, and get along with the other students. And...well....just do your best, and I'll be proud of you no matter what."

"Thanks, Mom. I will,” said Alex. "Now I'd better get going. The hovercraft's waiting." Alex put down Millie, and kissed her on the forehead.

Alex's mother hugged him. "Goodbye, Alex. And good luck!"

Alex ran off toward the hovercraft as his mother and Millie waved to him. As they waved, Millie yelled, "Goodbye, big brother! And good luck! Promise you'll come back soon!"

As Alex reached the pier, he gave his admission letter to the school official, who gave him permission to board. Looking for an empty seat, he found one right next to a spunky-looking girl with her red hair done in twin pigtails. Just then, the school official stepped up to the front of the craft, and took roll call. Naturally, Alex answered "here" when his name was called. About a minute later, satisfied that everyone was present, the official gave the signal to start the hovercraft. And as the engines fired up, so did Alex's feeling of anticipation. In a matter of hours, he would become a full-fledged student at the most famous Pokémon trainer's school in the world - Pokémon Academy.

The hovercraft sped across the glassy surface of the ocean, carrying its precious cargo of the newest Academy students. On a whim, Alex detached a Pokéball from a chain he was wearing on his neck. He expanded and opened it. A grey Eevee emerged from the ball, sparkles flying off of its body as it materialized.

"Hey, Eevee," said Alex. "Check out the ocean. Isn't it beautiful?"

"Wow! A grey Eevee!" exclaimed the girl sitting next to him. "I've never seen one before!"

"Oh, you like it? Eevee was the Pokémon I started my journey with," said Alex. "And ever since then, it’s been my most valuable partner." Alex suddenly noticed a Vulpix sitting on Macey’s lap. “And who’s your little friend there?”

"Oh, you mean my little sweetie pie?” smiled the girl as she petted her Vulpix. "This Vulpix was the first Pokémon I ever caught. We've been through so much together; it's almost like a sister to me."

As Vulpix and Eevee caught sight of each other, they smiled and shook tails.

"Well Eevee, looks like you found your first friend at the Academy", said Alex.

"Sure looks that way.", smiled the girl. "Oh, yeah. I'm Macey from Mahogany Town. What's your name?"

"I'm Alex from Goldenrod City." The two smiled and shook hands.

Just then, the two heard a groan from the back of the craft, and looked behind them to see what was going on. Near the back was a boy sporting a pompadour. He had gone completely green in the face, and looked like he was trying VERY hard not to vomit.

"Yeesh", said Macey. "It's a high-tech hovercraft, for crying out loud. How can you get seasick here?"

"Maybe he just has a sensitive stomach." said Alex. "It happens to the best of us."

They turned back around. "Anyway, that gray Eevee is so cool! You gotta tell me how you got it!" said Macey.

"You really wanna know?", said Alex. "Well, the truth is, this Eevee was a gift from a dear friend who died a while back. It was a little over a year ago, right before I started my Pokémon journey....."

A little over a year ago......

Alex stood in front of a headstone underneath a Pecha Berry tree, with a kaleidoscope of Beautifly perched in the branches. A bouquet of lilies had already been placed on the grave. He stared at them silently for about a minute, and then took a small photo out of his pocket. In it, Alex and a girl with honey-blonde hair and pale white skin were sitting on a porch swing together, smiling happily. Alex laid a kiss on the photo, then knelt down and gently slid it into the bouquet. He then placed a hand on top of the headstone.

"I'm sorry, Anna," said Alex sadly. "I know how much you wanted to go on a Pokémon journey with me, and see what real Pokémon were like up close. I wish there was something I could have done to help you."

"You helped more than anyone ever could," said a voice behind him. Alex turned around to see a young woman who he immediately recognized as Anna's mother. She had honey-blonde hair like her daughter, and wore a black dress with a matching hat and fishnet veil.

"Oh, Mrs. Harper!" said Alex in surprise. "Well, I didn't do all that much. All I did was come over every now and then and hang out with her to help cheer her up."

Mrs. Harper walked over to the grave, picked up the photo Alex had placed in the bouquet, and gazed at it with a solemn expression. "I still remember the day I took this picture. We were all so happy that day, just having fun together. It almost made me forget Anna was sick."

"Well, we didn't know each other very long, but we were really good friends," said Alex. "And I always enjoyed hanging out with her. She was just so much fun to be with."

"Your visits were always the best part of her day," said Mrs. Harper. "You were always able to make her smile, even when I couldn't. I still remember how her face would light up when she talked about how you two made a promise that one day when she got better, the two of you would journey together as Pokémon trainers. You were able to give her true happiness, however brief." Mrs. Harper gently placed a hand on Alex's shoulder. "The truth is, there was nothing anyone could have done. The doctors did everything they could, but it was a rare disease, and the chances of curing it were impossible. I kept hoping there was a chance she'd make it, but.....oh, my poor little baby....." Mrs. Harper finally broke down and fell to her knees, sobbing.

Alex went to her side and hugged her. "I know how you feel, Mrs Harper. I miss her too."

Mrs. Harper hugged him tightly. "Thank you for being so good to my daughter. She couldn't have asked for a better friend than you." She let him go and dried her eyes as the two stood up and stared at the Pecha berry tree where the Beautifly were perched.

"This is a beautiful spot you picked out," said Mrs. Harper. "With all those Beautifly up there, it's like she has her own little flock of angels watching over her."

"Well, Anna loved all Pokémon, but Beautifly were always her favorite," said Alex. "I figured she'd be happiest among them."

"Oh, that reminds me!" exclaimed Mrs. Harper suddenly. "I have something for you."

Mrs. Harper opened up a leather bag she had left next to the tree, and took out a glass incubator with a Pokémon egg inside and a Pokéball on top, and placed it on the table. Alex stared at it in amazement.

"This is a Pokémon egg that my husband got as a gift from a Pokémon farm during one of his trips. We gave it to Anna so she could have a Pokémon to start a journey with when she got better. She said that she wanted you to have it if anything happened to her. And also, think of it as a thank-you gift from me, for making my Anna's last days a lot brighter than I could have made them." She handed the egg to Alex. "It's yours."

For a brief moment, Alex just stared at her, dumbfounded. Then his eyes grew to the size of saucers, and he smiled as he happily accepted the egg. "Thank you so much, Mrs. Harper! This is great! And I promise that no matter what kind of Pokémon hatches from this egg, I'll take good care of it!" Alex hugged the incubator tightly. "It's the least I can do to honor Anna's memory."

*********************

“Sorry to hear about your friend,” said Macey with a sympathetic look. “It must have been hard losing someone so close to you.”

“It was, but she left me a wonderful gift, and I’ll always be grateful for it,” said Alex. “Anyway, when I brought the egg home that day, my mom and sister were over the moon. Millie and I took care of the egg, so it could hatch strong and healthy. We sang songs to it, took it for walks, read books to it, watched TV with it, took baths with it, and even slept with it. A couple of days before I became a trainer, it finally hatched. When it turned out to be a gray Eevee, we were all really excited."

"Wow! That's so cool!" said Macey. "They say that different-colored Pokémon are REALLY hard to find, and the chances of even catching on is, like, one in a bazillion! So, how does it do in battle?"

"A lot better than you might think," said Alex. "Eevee may look cute and cuddly, but it royally pwns in battle! Not to mention it's picked up a few tricks over the past year. Hey, if you really want to see it in action, you wanna battle after the opening ceremony?"

"Now you're talking!" said Macey. "I've always wanted to see a different-colored Pokémon in action! That reminds me, what other Pokémon do you have?"

"Not that many," said Alex. "Just a Marril, and a Phanpy. But they're both awesome Pokémon, too. So, what kind of Pokémon do you have, Macey?"

"Well, you've already met Vulpix," She gently stroked her Vulpix as it smiled. "I also have a Quilava, which evolved from the Cyndaquil I got from Professor Elm. There's also Macargo, Starmie, and Electabuzz."

"Wow, that's sure a lot of fire-type Pokemon," said Alex.

"You bet! I absolutely LOVE fire Pokémon!" said Macey as she huggled her Vulpix. "Their heat and passion just gets me all fired up!"

Just then, there was an announcement over the PA. "Attention all passengers. We are now on final approach to Gaia Island. If you will all look through the window on your left, you will see the main Academy building coming into view. Once the craft comes to a complete stop, please proceed to the docking bay in an orderly fashion, and await further instructions. Thank you for your cooperation, and on behalf of the entire academy faculty, we welcome you to your new home away from home."

****************

As the hovercraft pulled up next to the dock, the passenger door opened, and the students disembarked. As Alex and Macey looked behind them, they noticed that the boy with the pompadour was still looking green in the face. One of the officials was rubbing his back, saying “Easy there, son. We're on solid ground now, you'll be okay". After letting out a deafening belch, the green left his face. The boy took a few seconds to get his bearings, then straightened up and joined the others in line.

As Alex and the other waited on the dock, they looked up and got their first real glimpse of Pokémon Academy. It was truly a majestic building, which sorta looked like it had been built back in the colonial era. In the center of the roof, there was a flag that bore the Academy logo, while in the corners; there were four flags that bore symbols of a flame, a water drop, a lightning bolt, and a leaf.

"Wow," said Alex. "That building is amazing. It almost looks some kind of palace"

"Yeah. And to think we're gonna be going to school here," said Macey.

Just then, five Officer Jennys arrived, and one of them stepped out in front of the crowd. She held up a megaphone, and spoke to the crowd.

"Hello, everyone, and welcome to Pokémon Academy. The opening ceremonies will begin in just a moment. But before we head inside, I'd like to give you a quick rundown of the history of our school. This school was first created 40 years ago by a small group of elite Pokémon trainers who wished to pass on their skills to the next generation of young, aspiring trainers. As the years passed, much like some species of Pokémon, this school has changed and evolved with the times. However, the overall spirit has remained the same. And that spirit is to help Pokémon trainers from all walks of like to be the best they can be, and to succeed in whatever path they choose in life. I hope you'll all do your very best with that in mind."

Just then, the main gate behind the Jennys opened.

"Everyone, the opening ceremonies are about to start. Once inside, our headmaster will give you all the details of your sorting and registration. Now, if you're all ready, please follow us to the main auditorium."

The Officer Jennys turned around and headed for the main gate of the school, and the students followed.

As the students walked the long, classroom-lined hallways leading to the auditorium, Alex turned to Macey.

"So, how'd you end up applying to Pokémon Academy?" he asked.

"Well, it was after the Johto League Silver Conference", said Macey. "I was in Division H of the semi-finals, but I didn't earn enough points to move on to the victory tournament. Just as I'm leaving the closing ceremonies, I bump into a recruiter, who told me how impressed he was with my battle skills. When he told me he thought that *I* might have what it takes to join Pokémon Academy, I almost fainted. As soon as I got home, I filled out my application on the pamphlet he gave me and mailed it in. I took the entrance exam, I passed, and here I am."

"That's almost just like what happened to me!" said Alex. "Except I had just lost in the quarter-finals of the Whirl Cup. On my way back to the mainland, I met a recruiter on the boat. When he told me he thought I was right for Pokémon Academy, I nearly fell overboard, I was so surprised."

"Have you ever given any thought...." quoted Macey.

"To your full potential as a trainer?" finished Alex.

"They gave us the exact same speech!" they both said together as they laughed.

"You know, I still remember the battle portion of the entrance exam", said Alex. "It was all thanks to Eevee that I'm here...."

******************

Alex stood in the arena, facing off against his battle proctor in a three-on-three battle for his practical skills exam. His Phanpy had easily defeated the proctor's Mightyena and Venomoth, but it was proving to be a different story with the proctor's Gengar. It had easily defeated both Phanpy and Marrill, leaving him with only one Pokémon left. He HAD to win this one to qualify for the Academy. Fortunately, he'd had the foresight to save his best Pokémon for last.

"Eevee, I choose you!", Alex yelled as he threw his Pokéball. Eevee emerged, sparkles flying from its body.

"Okay Eevee, we have to win this battle to make it into the Academy! You ready to give it your all?"

"Vee!" Eevee nodded, ready to go.

"Okay, Eevee, Swift attack!" Eevee launched a barrage of stars from its mouth, but they all passed through Gengar harmlessly.

"Bad choice, kid," said the proctor. "You should know that Normal attacks have no effect on Ghost-types."

"Maybe, but by the same coin, Ghost-type attacks have no effect on Normal-types, either!" said Alex. "Which sorta puts us at a stalemate."

"Not quite, kid," said the proctor. "Gengar's got a few surprises handy for just such an occasion. Gengar, use Sludge Bomb!"

"Gengar!" Gengar yelled as it fired balls of sludge from its mouth. Eevee was nailed, but managed to get to its feet.

"I guess that gives me the upper hand here.", said the proctor. "So, how are you planning to win this?"

"You're about to find out," said Alex. "Eevee, use Agility!"

Eevee began running circles around Gengar at super speed.

"Come on, Gengar! Try to slow it down with another Sludge Bomb!" Gengar tried to launch one, but the little Eevee was so fast, Gengar was fiinding it impossible to aim. Eevee began zigzagging all over the field, zipping here and there. Gengar was having such a horrible time trying to even FIND Eevee, that it eventually got dizzy and couldn't tell which way was up.

"We've got an opening, Eevee! Use Iron Tail!" Eevee zipped straight toward Gengar, and as it jumped into the air somersaulting rapidly, its tail glowed. Eevee's tail slammed into Gengar hard, sending it flying all the way to the back of the battlefield. Gengar managed to stay on its feet, but was looking pretty banged up.

"Not bad, kid. But you haven't won yet! Gengar, use Psywave!" Gengar fired off a wave of energy at Eevee.

"Okay, Eevee, time to finish it! Use Shadow Ball!" Eevee fired off an inky black ball of energy from its mouth, which plowed right through the Psywave and nailed Gengar dead on. Gengar was sent flying into the back on the wall, and then fell to the ground unconscious.

"Oh, and by the way, you shoulda also known that Ghost-types are HIGHLY vulnerable to other Ghost-type attacks.", said Alex with a grin.

"Gengar is unable to battle! Eevee is the winner!" said a judge nearby. "The winner of this exam battle is Alex from Goldenrod City!"

"Eevee, we did it! I'm in!" said Alex. Eevee leaped into Alex's arms, and Alex hugged it tightly.

"That was an excellent battle, son," smiled the proctor. "I have to say I was NOT expecting that Shadow Ball. And I REALLY wasn't expecting to see one that powerful from a non-Ghost-type. You battled well, and you earned this victory. Welcome to Pokémon Academy."

"Thank you, sir," Alex smiled as he shook the proctor's hand.

**************

".....and that's how I passed my exam," said Alex. Macey had a look of surprise on her face.

"Your Eevee knows Shadow Ball?!" she exclaimed. "Now I REALLY wanna battle it!"

Just then, they reached the large double doors that led to the auditorium. Two of the Jennys stepped up and opened them.

"Everyone, please enter through here," said one of the Jennys. "The opening ceremonies are about to begin."

Alex began to follow the others inside, but then he felt a tug on his cloak. As he turned around, he noticed there was someone stepping on it. As he looked up, he saw that that particular someone was a very pretty girl about his own age. She had purple hair tied in two pigtails which framed a small, cute face.

"Umm, excuse me, but you're stepping on my cloak," said Alex.

The girl looked down and suddenly blushed. She gave a surprised "Eep!" as she quickly stepped back, and had an embarrassed look on her face.

"I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm so sorry!" the girl stammered as she bowed repeatedly. "I didn't mean to step on your cloak! I wasn't paying attention! I'm REALLY sorry!"

"Hey, don't stress over it," said Alex. "It's no big deal, really. I'm not mad at you or anything."

"Yeah, I know," said the girl meekly. "I didn't mean to be such a klutz, but I can't help it. I'm just a little nervous right now. I'm really not used to this sort of thing."

"Hold on a second," said Alex as he fished around in his pocket. "I have something here that'll help." He handed her a small, green piece of candy. "These are my favorite brand of mints. I always heard that mints help calm you down when you're stressed. Try one."

The girl accepted the mint, and popped it into her mouth. After a few seconds, she took a deep breath, let it out, and smiled.

"Wow, you were right! I feel better already! Thank you so much!" she smiled.

"Don't mention it.", said Alex. "Now, let's get going before we get left behind."

"Sure thing!" said the girl. She bowed to him one last time before she ran to catch up with the others.

Alex stood there smiling, until he heard Macey yelling from up ahead. "Hey Alex, come on!" she called. "Hurry up, the opening ceremonies are starting!"

"Okay, I'll be right there!" Alex called back as he hurried back to his spot in the crowd.

As Alex caught up to Macy, his heart skipped a beat as the crowd entered the auditorium. A feeling of euphoria washed over him as he and the others stepped through the double doors. He knew right then and there that this was the start of something big.

And so begins Alex's first year in the school known as Pokémon Academy. And with it, the start of a brand new adventure.

And now, without further ado, we move on to Chapter 2.

*************

As the two Officer Jennys opened the double doors leading to the main auditorium, Alex felt his heart skip a beat as he took a look inside. There was a huge crowd, with a very official-looking gathering on the main stage.

I still can't believe I'm here! Alex thought to himself. But I've come this far, and there's no turning back now! It's time to step forward and become a true student at Pokémon Academy!

Taking a deep breath, Alex stepped forward along with the others, and entered the auditorium.

As Alex and the others entered the auditorium, they looked around at the students already seated. They were separated into four groups, according to the color of their uniform. The first group had red uniforms, the second had green, the third had yellow, and the fourth had blue. As they approached the front, they saw Nurse Joy standing at a podium. As she saw the new students arrive, she spoke to them through the microphone.

"Excellent! I see our new students have all arrived! Now, just form a line in front of the stage, and we'll begin the opening ceremonies."

The students lined up as they were instructed. As they looked up, they saw what appeared to be four teachers sitting at a large table. One was a muscular, dark-haired guy in a red gym suit. The second was a suave handsome blonde man in a purple formal suit. The third was a spiky-haired fourteen-year-old kid in a lab coat. And the fourth was an attractive blond lady wearing a lab coat over a tank top and a pair of shorty shorts. Above them were a series of video monitors.

"Good morning, ladies and gentleman!" said Nurse Joy. "And welcome to the Pokémon Academy start-of-term opening ceremonies! In a moment, this group of children will be sorted into dorms, and become official students of Pokémon Academy! But first, it's time to introduce our headmaster, a man of the world and lover of all things Pokémon! Let's have a warm welcome for Mr. Shiro Kotobuki!"

A gentleman in his mid-40s took the stage, and was greeted with a multitude of cheers. He was a bit chubby, and had a bit of a receding hairline. He wore a yellow trench coat with brown trim that sort of made him look like a giant Pikachu. As he got to center stage, Nurse Joy handed him the microphone, and he turned to the crowd with a big smile on his face.

"Hello, everyone, hello!" he said cheerfully. "Today marks the beginning of yet another year at Pokémon Academy. Looking at you all, I am reminded of all the things that make this school great. Not just what the students learn, but the special feelings that goes with those lessons. Confidence in your own abilities, and a special bond with your Pokémon that every trainer treasures. This was what my grandfather envisioned when he and his friends first founded this school 100 years ago. As you students gathered here, both new and old, make your way through the Academy, I would like you all to treasure the lessons here that we value the most. The kind of lessons that one cannot learn from a classroom or a textbook. The kind of lessons that can only be learned through pure experience. Cherish your experiences here, and learn the lessons they teach you. Your lives as trainers will become that much richer because of it."

The students cheered. Mr. Kotobuki allowed them a moment before he went on.

"And now, on to our first order of business. It's time to begin the sorting of our new students. As you know, students at our school are sorted into one of four different dorms. Fire Red, Leaf Green, Thunder Yellow, and Aqua Blue. Each one of these dorms represents the different personalities and training styles of various young trainers. Through this sorting, we encourage students here to remain true to their own instincts and feelings, while at the same time, learning to understand the many different kinds of trainers in the world."

Just then, a changing curtain was wheeled onto the stage by a school official, along with a table with numerous folded uniforms in paper bags.

"Now then, when Nurse Joy calls your name, please proceed to the stage. Once here, we will play a video of your battle at the entrance exams. After the video, our four dorm heads will discuss your battle, and determine which dorm you are best suited for." He motioned to the four teachers sitting at the table. "Once your dorm is chosen, I will issue you the appropriate uniform. At that time, please change into it, and join the group with your respective dorm. Nurse Joy, please call the first new student."

Headmaster Kotobuki turned the podium over to Nurse Joy, who accepted the mic.

"Our first new student is Tony from Steelrock City!"

The pompadoured boy who had been seasick through the entire trip stepped up onto the stage with a big grin on his face. Nurse Joy smiled and shook his hand, then turned to the four dorm heads. "Dorm heads, begin your evaluation!"

The video screens turned on, showing footage of a battle. Tony, dressed in blue jeans and a bomber jacket with Gyarados trim, was facing one of the battle proctors. The footage showed his Machop slamming a Golem into the ground with Vital Throw, his Vigoroth wailing away on a Venomoth with Fury Swipes, and his Houndor roasting a Vileplume with Flamethrower. As the video ended, the dorm heads whispered among themselves for about a minute, then turned to Nurse Joy.

The muscular man in the gym suit spoke first. "Well, it's pretty clear that this kid's all about raw power. His Pokémon have strength to spare, and he's taught them to use it well. We all agree that he would be best suited for the Fire Red dorm!"

"Congratulations, my boy!" said Headmaster Kotobuki amidst the applause of the crowd. "Now then, accept you uniform, and take your place among your new classmates!" He handed Tony one of the bags on the table.

Tony accepted the bag, and took it with him behind the changing curtain. He emerged about a minute later, bearing a red jacket with matching pants, and a plain black shirt underneath. The jacket bore the Academy insignia on the left, and the Fire Red logo on the right. Tony gave the crowd a thumbs-up coupled with a grin. The crowd cheered as he joined the crowd of Fire Red students, who all shook his hand and patted him on the back.

"Our next new student is Sakura from Ecruteak City!"

The pretty purple-haired girl who had stepped on Alex's cloak before stepped onto the stage. As she got up there, Alex noticed she was shaking a bit. Nurse Joy took her hand and smiled gently. "There's no need to be nervous, dear. You'll do just fine." She then turned to the four dorm heads. "Dorm heads, begin your evaluation!"

Another battle played on the screen. Sakura, dressed in a cute pink blouse and blue miniskirt, was facing another proctor. As the footage played, her Espeon effortlessly dodged an Arbok's Poison Sting, her Beautifly paralyzed a Carnivine with Stun Spore, and her Delcatty froze a Claydol with Blizzard.

Again, the dorm heads conferred in private, and this time, it was the blonde man in the purple suit who spoke.

"This young lady's battle skills are truly poetry in motion. Her Pokémon move with an abundance of grace and fluidity, and she commands them with true style and serenity, no doubt influenced by her experience in the Japanese tea ceremony. I would be honored to have this young lady as a member of the Leaf Green dorm."

Once again, the crowd applauded, and Sakura accepted her uniform from Kotobuki. She took the bag behind the curtain, and a moment later, emerged in a uniform that looked similar to Tony's, except hers was green, bore the Leaf Green logo on the right of the jacket, and instead of pants, had a short, pleated skirt. She turned to the crowd, smiled, and bowed. The crowd cheered as she joined the Leaf Green students, who all gave her big hugs.

This went on for quite some time. Various students stepped up, and were assigned to different dorms in the same way as Tony and Sakura. In the videos of the exam battles, there were quite a few that stood out from the rest. Macey, who was accepted into the Fire Red dorm, annihilated an entire team with Magcargo, Vulpix, and Quilava, while a silver-haired boy named Neroli, who made it into the Aqua Blue dorm, swept an entire match with a Blastoise that was using hit-and-run tactics. One trainer that particularly stood out was a boy with long, red hair named Kamon, who also made it to Fire Red. Like Tony's team, Kamon's Pokémon were very powerful, and easily overwhelmed the proctor's team. However, Kamon was also very mean to his Pokémon, as he often yelled at them, and insulted them. Alex could already tell he was NOT going to like this guy.

One by one, the students were all sorted, until finally, Alex was the only one left. He was so absorbed in the battles that he almost didn't hear Nurse Joy call his name.

"And last, but far from least, we have Alex from Goldenrod City!"

"Huh? Oh, right!" Alex jolted out of his daze and hurried up onto the stage. As he stood next to Nurse Joy, she called for the dorm heads to begin their evaluation. Alex looked up at the familiar footage of his battle. Though he hadn't swept a battle like some of the others, he'd managed to put on a good battle, and he watched his Pokémon with pride. As the footage ended, the dorm heads conferred again, and the man in the gym suit spoke.

"I gotta say, this kid's really something. His Pokémon may be little, but they're big on both power and skill. Not to mention the kid's got a real passion for battle, along with a few clever tricks up his sleeve. I'd be proud to have him as a member of the Fire Red dorm!"

The crowd cheered as Alex accepted his uniform from Kotobuki, and went behind the curtain to change. He carefully removed his cloak and his street clothes, and placed them in a nearby box that bore his name. As he put on his uniform, he was surprised by how much he liked the way it felt on him. It felt light, comfortable, and easy to move around in, but at the same time, it felt sturdy and rugged enough to stand the rigors of outdoor travel.

As Alex finished changing, he emerged from the changing curtain, and waved to the crowd as he smiled. The crowd cheered, and the Fire Red students waved him over. As Alex left the stage and joined the Fire Red students, he was greeted with handshakes, pats on the back, and a couple of noogies. A moment later, Macey ran over to him. She wore the Fire Red girl's uniform, which had the same coloring as the boy's Fire Red uniform, but had a red pleated skirt. Alex also noticed that unlike Sakura, Macey was wearing black pantyhose. As Macey caught sight of Alex, she smiled and grabbed his arm.

"Can you believe it, Alex?" said Macey. "We're both in the same dorm! This is awesome!"

"Yeah! What are the odds?" smiled Alex.

Just then, Headmaster Kotobuki spoke again. "Well, students, that concludes this year's opening ceremony. At this time, I would like to ask all of our new students to leave through the doors on your left, and proceed to the main stadium, where your registration will take place. Once your registration is complete, you may take some time to tour our school. However, be sure to be at your dorm in time for the welcome party. And with that, to our new students, welcome! And to our returning students, welcome back!"

As the crowd filed out of the auditorium, Alex, Macey, and the other new Fire Red students headed through the doors. Upon reaching the hallway, they saw a sign on the wall with an arrow pointing to the main stadium, and followed it.

*******************

Moments later, in the middle of the school's battle stadium, Alex was standing in front of one of many tables situated around the field. A lady with short pink hair was typing away at a laptop. After clicking on the mouse a couple of times, she turned to Alex and smiled.

"Okay, you've been entered into the system, and all your information checks out," she said. "Now, I'll just need to see your Pokédex for a minute."

Alex handed his Pokédex to the clerk, who hooked it up to a small device attached to the laptop. She typed a bit more, and then clicked the mouse again. After about five seconds, she removed the Pokédex from the device, placed it on top of a small book with an envelope attached to it, and handed the bundle to Alex.

"Okay, you're all set. Your Pokédex has been programmed with your student ID. Here's your student handbook, and a pamphlet with some info on the school's computer network. The welcome party for your dorm begins at 8 o' clock sharp. Once you get to your dorm island, please see Nurse Joy at the Pokémon Center to get your room key and to pick up your luggage. Thanks you for your patience, and we hope you enjoy your stay here at Pokémon Academy."

"I will, Miss. Thank you," said Alex. Alex gathered up the bundle and left the stadium.

As Alex reached the hallway, he saw Macey standing there. As she caught sight of him, she waved to him, and he ran over to her.

"Hey there, Macey!" said Alex. "You finished your registration, too?"

"Sure did!" said Macey. "I guess now we're both officially students! So, you wanna head to the dorm, or take a quick tour of the school?"

"Well, I guess it wouldn't hurt to take a quick walk around the school. And while I'm at it, I'd like to find out what the deal is with these different dorms. I mean, what's this dorm system all about?"

"I think I can clear that up for you," said a voice from nearby.

Alex and Macey looked around, and saw two students wearing Thunder Yellow uniforms. One was a tall, handsome boy who looked to be about 16. He has jet black, well-groomed hair and a pair of thin-framed glasses. The other was a pretty young girl who looked to be 12. She a Mary Tyler Moore-esque hairstyle and a pair of white, thigh-length stockings.

"Hello there," said the boy. "You must be two of the new students. Allow us to introduce ourselves. My name is Stewart Winston from Palm Hills."

"And I'm Kiruka Onnarashi, from Dewford Town," said the girl as she smiled and waved to them.

Alex shook Stewart's hand. "I'm Alex Reed, from Goldenrod City."

Macey shook Kiruka's hand. "And I'm Macey, from Mahogany Town."

"Goldenrod City, you say?" smiled Stewart. "I've been there before. Lovely city. I especially like the Radio Tower. My father was interviewed on DJ Mary's show once."

"Good to hear," said Alex. "But anyway, you said you were gonna explain this whole dorm system to us. What's it all about?"

"Oh, it's quite simple, really," said Stewart. "If you like, we can explain it all while I give you a quick tour of the main campus."

"Sure! That'd be cool!" said Alex and Macey together.

*********************

"Basically, the four dorms represent the four most common types Pokemon trainers. Students are sorted into dorms that match their personality and battle style," said Stewart as they walked down the hall. "First off, there's the Fire Red dorm, which is where you two have been sorted into. Students there are the energetic, passionate type. Their battle style tends to lean toward a full-frontal assault with power moves."

Alex and Macey looked at each other and laughed a bit.

"Yeah, I guess we do kinda fit that bill," said Alex, blushing.

Just then, Alex caught sight of Sakura. She was surrounded by quite a few girls from Leaf Green, who were chattering away.

"I know we may seem a little hyper, but we just can't help it!" said one girl. "You are just SOOOO pretty!"

"You have the absolute LOVELIEST hair, Sakura!" said another girl. "Do you groom it a lot?"

"And your skin is nearly flawless for someone who's traveled so much," said yet another girl. "What's your secret?"

Alex stood there for a minute, watching her. He had to admit, she was pretty. Just then, he noticed a hand waving in front of his face.

"Hey, what are you gawking at?" said Kiruka.

"Oh! Umm....sorry," stammered Alex. "I was just wondering about those students over there."

"Ah, those are the Leaf Green students,” said Kiruka. "They're more of a quite, serene type. Their battle style has a great emphasis on Pokémon that battle with grace and fluidity. As a result, most of the Leaf Green students are trainers seeking to become coordinators"

"Yeah, I remember the way her Pokémon moved in the video of her entrance battle," said Alex. "It was almost like they were dancing."

"Anyway, come on," said Kiruka. "We'll show you some of the other facilities."

**********************

"......And then there's us, the Thunder Yellow students," said Stewart. "The qualities we value are intelligence and logic. Our battle style tends to lead more toward strategy and planning."

"Hmm, I think I understand now," said Alex. "But what about that last house, Aqua Blue?"

"Hey, what's that room over there?" asked Macey, pointing to a strange-looking room that looked like a futuristic video arcade.

"Oh, that? That's the VR Battle Sim room," said Stewart as they passed “It was built for us by a research lab in the Orre Reigon. And I'm proud to say that it's far superior to those primitive computer simulators at Pokémon Tech."

"Wow, that's amazing!" said Macey. "I'd love to try it sometime!"

"That's not a problem," said Kiruka. "The Battle Sim room is free for all students to use. And you can even use your own Pokémon. Yet another advantage over the computer simulators at Pokémon Tech."

Just then, Alex caught sight of the Neroli kid who had been sorted into Aqua Blue. He was being escorted by a cheerful-looking boy from Aqua Blue who was wearing a cowboy hat. Neroli didn't appear to be enjoying the boy's company, as he had a positively grumpy look on his face.

"Hey, it's that kid with the Blastoise that was using hit-and-run tactics," said Alex. "I guess one of the Aqua Blue students is giving him a tour, too. But it's kinda weird."

"What is?" asked Kiruka.

"Well, I've noticed that people in the same dorm usually have somewhat similar personalities," said Alex. "Those two are both in the same dorm, but that Neroli kid looks all grumpy and surly, while the guy in the cowboy hat is all friendly and stuff. How come?"

"Well, that's because the Aqua Blue dorm is a bit different from the others," said Kiruka. "Aqua Blue students tend to have odd and unpredictable personalities. Which is exactly what their battle style is like."

"So, Aqua Blue is basically for students whose personalities and styles don't fit into any of the other three dorms?"

"Bingo"

Just then, Alex reached into his jacket, took out a Pokégear, and looked at the screen.

"Hmm, it's already 6," said Alex. He turned to Macey. "I know it's a bit early, but do you wanna head for our dorms now?"

"Hey, that's a nice Pokégear!" exclaimed Kiruka. "It's a good thing you brought one. They tend to come in real handy around here."

"Thanks, Kiruka," said Alex. "My dad gave it to me the day I started my journey. It's my most prized possession."

"Say, why don't we all exchange Pokégear numbers before you go?" asked Stewart. "That way, you two can call us if you need help with anything."

"Sounds like a plan!" said Alex.

"Count me in, too!" said Macey.

The four took out their Pokégears, gave each other their numbers, and entered them into the memory.

"Ah, there we go," said Stewart. "Anyway, your dorm is on Hephaistos Island. You can get there through the school's tunnel tram. Just head down that hallway towards the back entrance of the school, and you should see the tram station right outside."

"Okay! Thanks for everything, Stewart! And you too, Kiruka! We'll see you around campus!" said Alex. "Come on, Macey, let's find the tram and head for the dorm." Alex and Macey ran off as Stewart and Kiruka waved goodbye.

"They seem like a lively bunch," said Stewart. "Seems we've gotten quite a good crop this year” He then noticed Kiruka, who was smiling and blushing as she held her Pokégear. "Umm, what's with you, Kiruka?"

"Well, it's just that that Alex guy.....was kinda cute," smiled Kiruka as she blushed a bit deeper. "And for some reason, having his number in my Pokégear is making me feel all warm and fuzzy inside."

**************************

Alex and Macey found the tram station with no problem, and immediately boarded the first tram headed for Hephastios Island. In moments, the mini-tram was whizzing them through a tunnel towards their destination. They arrived at the island in less than a minute. As they exited the station, they saw what looked like the Fire Red dorm. There were three buildings. On the left was a red dorm house with white trim, and on the right was a white dorm house with red trim. In the middle was a smaller building connecting the two bigger ones. Alex and Macey both recognized it as a Pokémon Center, and headed inside.

As they entered, they noticed all the familiar trappings of a Pokémon Center, along with a bulletin board on one wall, and a video monitor above the main desk. At the desk, they saw a Chansey polishing the tabletop.

"Chansey!" said the Chansey as it smiled and waved at them.

"Hi there!" said Alex. "We're supposed to see Nurse Joy to get our luggage and our room numbers. Do you know where she is?"

"Hold on! I'll be right there!" said a voice from the back.

A moment later, Nurse Joy entered the room. She looked a bit different from the other Nurse Joys that Alex and Macey had known. She had the same pretty face and pink hair done up in loops, but this Nurse Joy was well-tanned and a bit more muscular than the other Joys. Instead of the nurse outfit, she was wearing a blue, sleeveless diving suit with knee-length shorts. As she came in, Alex and Macey were taken aback by the fact that she was carrying a HUGE luggage rack above her head. As she gently placed it on the floor, she turned to Alex and Macey and smiled.

"Heya, kids!" she said cheerfully. "Sorry I took so long. I was bringing in the rest of the new students' luggage. So, what can I do you for?"

"Oh, we're new students for this semester," said Alex. "I'm Alex Reed, and this is Macey. We're here to get our room keys and our luggage."

"Sure thing!" said Nurse Joy. She reached into a drawer in her desk, sorted through it for a bit, then pulled out two keys. "Ah! Here we go!" She handed them to Alex and Macey. "Alex, you're in room 67, bedroom B in the boys' dorm. Macey, you're in room 58, bedroom A in the girls' dorm."

Nurse Joy then looked over the luggage bundle for a second. She took out a blue backpack and a black wheeled suitcase, and handed them to Alex. She then went back, took out a brown suitcase and a red tote bag, and handed them to Macey.

"The boy's dorm is through that door, and the girl's dorm is through that one," said Nurse Joy, gesturing to the doors on either side of the Center. "Take a little time to unpack and rest up. The welcome party starts at 8. See you there!"

"Thanks!" said Alex and Macey together. Alex then turned to Macey. "Well, I'm heading off to my dorm now. See you at the party!"

"Okay! See you there!" The two then headed off to their respective dorms, luggage in hand.

***************************

Alex found his room on the second floor with no problem. He unlocked the door through the slot and entered. As he looked around the room, he noticed it was small, yet comfortable. There was a sitting room with a couch, a coffee table, and a TV, and to the left, there were three doors leading to the bedrooms. Alex found his, and began to unpack. First, he hung up his clothes in the closet using the hangers provided. He then unpacked his miscellaneous stuff and placed it on the desk, including his alarm clock, a picture of himself with his family, and his precious laptop computer. As he finished up, he decided to head back down to the Pokémon Center. But as he left the bedroom, he saw someone in the sitting room.

It was the pompadoured boy who had gotten seasick on the hovercraft before. He was standing there with his luggage behind him, scowling at Alex.

"HEY!" he shouted. "Whaddya think you're doing here?"

"What are you talking about?" said Alex. "This is the dorm room I was assigned to."

"And you think that gives ya the right to trespass in my territory?!" shouted the boy. "I run this room, and I'll decide who gets assigned here! You better start explaining yourself!"

"Hey, hold on a minute! I...," stammered Alex.

"What, ya got a problem with that?" snapped the boy. "I don't like yer attitude, pal!"

"Come on now, can't we just.....," Alex began to say.

At that moment, all the anger vanished from the boy's face, and he burst out laughing.

"Relax, pal! I'm just messin' with ya!" said the boy as he put an arm around Alex. "You shoulda seen the look on yer face! You are too easy!"

"Umm, yeah," said Alex, laughing uneasily.

"Sorry if I scared ya, but I can't help doing that to my friends sometimes. I never get tired of that look they get,” said the boy. "Oh, yeah. I'm Tony, by the way" He extended a hand. "Pleased to meetcha."

"Hi, I'm Alex," said Alex as he shook Tony's hand.

"I was just about to unpack, so I'll see you at the party?" said Tony.

"We've still got some time, and it looks like you've got a lot of stuff. Mind if I help?"

"Sure thing, if you want."

******************

A minute later, Alex and Tony were sorting out Tony's stuff.

"So, you're from Steelrock City, huh?" asked Alex. "Isn't that the city in Hoenn with all the factories?"

"Yep," said Tony. "Born and raised there. Just like everyone else in my family. From whereabouts do you hail from?"

"Goldenrod City, in the Johto region," answered Alex. "Born and raised there, too."

"My family went on vacation there once," said Tony. "I got to tour the Radio Tower. Love that place to death. DJ Mary's a real cutie pie."

"By the way, no offense, but I couldn't help noticing during the hovercraft ride, you looked like you were gonna puke,” said Alex.

"Yeah, I know," said Tony. "I tend to get seasick real easy. It runs in the family."

"I saw that video of your exam battle," said Alex. "Your Pokémon were all awesome! Especially that Machop!"

"Thanks," smiled Tony. "Yours were pretty sweet, too. And that Eevee of yours was really something!"

Just then, Alex's Pokégear went off again. As he looked at it, he noticed that it was already 8:00.

"Hey, the party's already starting!" said Alex. "We'd better hurry up and finish!"

"Don't worry about it," said Tony. "I can do the rest by myself tomorrow. Anyway, I'm starved! Wanna head down to the party and get some grub?"

"You read my mind," smiled Alex as they got up and left the dorm.

*******************

As the two boys got back to the Pokémon Center, they saw a sign in the lobby that said "WELCOME PARTY THIS WAY!" in huge red letters, with a large arrow beneath pointing to the back door. Alex and Tony followed the arrow to the back, and were greeted with a wonderful sight.

The backyard battle stadium of the Pokémon Center was playing host to what looked like a backyard barbecue. There were a number of Japanese lanterns hung from wires overhead. There were tables everywhere stacked with bowls filled with potato chips, cookies, soda, and other essential sugary sweet snack items. On one side of the field, there were two barbecue grills frying up hamburgers, hot dogs, bratwurst, and other yummy meat. One was being manned by Nurse Joy, the other was being manned by the muscular, gym-suited man who was at the opening ceremonies. The Fire Red students were scattered about, making merry. Some were enjoying the large bounty of junk food while chatting with each other about various stuff. Some were dancing to the music blasting from the nearby stereo. Others were having friendly battles on the side of the field. All of the students' Pokémon had been released from their balls, and the ones that weren't battling were either playing or eating. As Alex wandered into the crowd, he spotted Macey, who was dancing with two other girls. As Macey caught sight of him, she smiled and waved.

"Hey, Alex! You made it!" yelled Macey as she ran over to Alex and Tony. "Hey, you're that guy who almost went yacky on the way here."

"Um, yeah..." Tony laughed sheepishly.

"Oh, lemme introduce you," said Alex. "This is my new roommate, Tony from Steelrock City. Tony, this is my new friend Macey, from Mahogany Town. We met on the hovercraft."

Tony took Macey's hand and kissed it. "Enchanté, Madamoiselle" Macey blushed and giggled.

"I think we'll get to know each other better on a full stomach," said Alex. "Come on, let's grab some grub!"

The three headed to a nearby table, and piled some plates with food. But before they could start eating, they suddenly heard the shrill sound of a whistle that the gym-suited man had just blown. The stereo immediately shut off.

"Sorry to interrupt the festivities, but it's time for our start-of-year greeting. So, if everyone could come to the front?"

The students headed to the snack tables, and sat down in the chairs. Nurse Joy and the gym-suited man walked to the front, and addressed the crowd.

"Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to another year at Pokémon Academy, and another year here at the Fire Red dorm. For those of you that don't know, my name is Joe Takahashi. I'm a former P1 Grand Prix contender, and lover of the great outdoors. In addition to being the head of Fire Red dorm, I am also the Academy's resident teacher of Physical Education and Pokémon Fitness." The students clapped. Joe waited a moment, then went on. "Now, as you all know, we have some new faces joining us this year. At this time, I would like to ask said new faces to come on up here."

Alex, Tony, and Macey headed up to the front, and were quickly joined by Kamon, the red-haired boy that Alex had seen at the opening ceremonies. Kamon had a look on his face that just screamed "I hate you all” Just then, Joe spoke again.

"All right, kids. We've got four new Fire Red students joining us this year." He turned to Alex and the others. "Now, I'd like you each to introduce yourselves, and tell the other students about yourselves." He gestured to Alex. "Let's start with you, son."

Alex stepped up to the front, cleared his throat, and began to speak. "Well, my name's Alex Reed, and I'm from Goldenrod City. I've been a trainer for about a year now. I haven't competed for badges or anything, but I was a quarter-finalist in the Whirl Cup Competition. I joined Pokémon Academy to learn more about battling so I can compete in the Pokémon League someday, and become a great Pokémon trainer just like Drake of the Orange Crew. It's nice to meet you all, and I'm really happy to be here." The students all clapped.

"Okay, next up, Tony," said Joe. Tony stepped up.

"The name's Tony, and I'm from Steelrock City. I haven't done any travelling until now, but I am one of the best trainers in all of Steelrock City. I joined the Academy so that someday, I can be good enough to take on the trainers in the Orre Region. It's good to be here, and I'm hoping to have some sweet battles while I'm here." The students clapped again.

"Next up, we have Macey!" said Joe. Macey stepped forward.

"Hi! I'm Macey from Mahogany Town!" said Macey cheerfully. "I've been a trainer for about a year, and I was a competitor in the Johto League Silver Conference. I made it to the semifinals, too. I came to Pokémon Academy to become a better battler so that next go-around, I can win it all! And I also wanna learn more about fire Pokémon, because I love 'em so much! I'm looking forward to a great first year here!" Again, the students clapped.

"And last, but not least, let's hear from Kamon!" said Joe. Kamon stepped forward, but didn't say anything. Instead, he just gave the whole crowd an icy stare, and walked off back to the dorm. Everyone was dumbfounded.

"Umm.....*ahem*. Anyway, let's move on to the main event," said Joe. He took a Pokéball out of his pocket, and released the Pokémon inside, which was a Ponyta. The Ponyta gave a greeting whinny. Joe then took three torches from a nearby rack, and lit them with his Ponyta's flaming mane. He then handed the three torches to Alex, Macey, and Tony.

"And now, in keeping with the sacred tradition of the Fire Red dorm, our three new students will light start-of-term bonfire." He gestured toward a pile of sticks and brush in the middle of the field, surrounded by a ring of stones. Just then, the sound of growling stomachs coming from Alex, Tony, and Macey could be heard. "And I think we'd better do it quick so they can have their dinner." The students all laughed.

Alex, Macey, and Tony walked over to the pile, and surrounded it on all sides. They lowered the torches and lit the pile ablaze, starting the fire. The students all applauded as the three returned to the front and blew out the torches before placing them back on the rack.

"Take a good look at that fire, everyone," said Joe. "That fire represents the reason you were chosen to be in this dorm. It represents the burning passion in your hearts and souls with which you pursue all things Pokémon. Not just in battles, but in all your goals. Always stay true to that fire, and to yourselves, and you'll go places" The students applauded. "Now everyone, enjoy the rest of the party!" He turned the stereo back on.

Alex, Macey, and Tony didn't need to be told twice. They picked up the plates that they had filled before, and began stuffing themselves. After they finished their plates, they headed back to the tables, filled three plates each, and ate some more. About 20 minutes later, they sat down, and patted their bellies happily.

"Now THAT was good eatin'!" said Tony. "I'm gonna have good dreams tonight!"

"You said it, Tony!" said Alex. "Nothin' like a good dose of junk food to make you feel like a new man!"

"Hey, guys! You feel like working off some of this food with a little battle?" asked Macey.

"I thought you'd never ask!" said Tony. "I've been itching for a battle ever since I got here! I figure it's only right that my very first battle here be against my two new buddies!"

"Hey, why don't we have a two-on-one double battle?" asked Alex. "Two of us will use one Pokémon, and one of us will use two."

"Sounds like a plan!" said Tony. "But how will we decide who battles who?"

"How else? With a three-way match of rock-paper scissors," said Macey.

After said match of rock-paper-scissors, it was decided that Alex would face off against Macey and Tony. They found an out-of-the-way spot on the side of the field.

"This'll do," said Tony. "We can battle here."

Alex stood on one end, while Macey and Tony stood on the other.

"Okay, Al, show me whatchoo got!" said Tony. "I'm looking forward to seein' what yer Pokémon can do!"

"And don't expect us to go easy just because we're new friends!" said Macey. "We're gonna give it our all!"

"Sure thing, you guys!" said Alex. "I'll pick my Pokémon first!"

"Marril, Phanpy, I choose you!" yelled Alex as he threw two Pokéballs. In a brilliant flash of light, Marril and Phanpy emerged onto the field.

"Machop, I choose you!" yelled Tony as he threw his Pokeball. A Machop emerged, and assumed a fighting pose.

"Quilava, I choose you!" yelled Macey as she threw her Pokeball. A Quilava emerged, and ignited the flames on its back.

"Okay, here we go!" said Alex. "Are you guys ready?"

"Ready!" said Tony and Macey together.

"Then let's do it!" said Alex. "Marril, start things off with your........"

"Umm, excuse me, can someone help me?" said a voice from the dorm entrance.

Alex, Tony, and Macey turned around to see Sakura standing in the doorway. Joe noticed her immediately. "What can I help you with, Miss?"

"Well, the Nurse Joy at my dorm's Pokémon Center told me that my luggage accidentally got sent to this dorm," said Sakura. "I was wondering if you knew where it was?"

"By any chance, are you Sakura?" asked Joe.

"Yes, sir. I am"

"Yeah, we've got your luggage. The crew told us about the mix-up before, so we've been keeping it safe for you. Wait here, I'll get it for you."

Joe headed inside the dorm, and returned a minute later carrying two fairly large brown suitcases. It was apparent that he was having trouble carrying them. Sakura accepted the suitcases, and gave a polite bow to Joe as she turned to leave. However, Sakura was also having trouble carrying the suitcases. Alex noticed this, and turned to Tony and Macey.

"Umm, guys, it looks like Sakura really needs help over there," said Alex. "Do you mind if I take a rain check on that battle?"

"Sure, that's okay," said Macey.

"Not a problem," said Tony.

Alex called Marril and Phanpy back into their Pokéballs, and ran over to Sakura and Joe.

"Excuse me, Mr. Takahashi, but is is okay if I help Sakura take her luggage back to dorm?" asked Alex.

"I don't see why not," said Joe. "Do you mind if he helps you out, Sakura?"

"Well, I wouldn't wanna trouble you....," said Sakura.

"It's no trouble, really!" said Alex. "I just don't want you to have to lug those back all by yourself."

"Well, if you really don't mind, then I'll gladly accept," said Sakura.

"When you get to the tram station, press the direct route button for Demetra Island," said Joe. "That'll take you straight to the dorm, and save you some time."

"We will. Thanks!" said Alex. He picked up the other suitcase, and headed off toward the station, with Sakura close behind.

*****************

Despite having to lug the suitcases all the way, Alex and Sakura made it to Demetra Island with no problems. Upon arriving at the Leaf Green dorm, they headed towards the Pokémon Center. As they arrived in the front lobby, the blonde, lavender-suited man who Alex recognized as the head of Leaf Green dorm was waiting for them.

"There you are, Sakura!" said the man happily. "We were all getting a bit worried, but I'm glad to see you made it back all right." He turned to Alex. "And who might you be, young man?"

"Oh, this is Alex, sir," said Sakura. "He offered to help me with my luggage."

"Well, that's very kind of you," said the man. "I do hope it wasn't too much trouble."

"Oh, it was no trouble at all, sir!" said Alex.

"Oh, yes, allow me to introduce myself. My name is Robert, and I'm the head of the Leaf Green dorm. In addition, I'm also teacher of Coordinator Techniques and Pokémon Economics." Robert extended a hand. "It's very nice to meet you."

"It's nice to meet you too," said Alex as he shook Robert's hand. "I hope to see you in some of your classes." He then turned to Sakura. "Sakura, is it okay if I help you carry your luggage up to your room?"

"Sure, that's fine!" smiled Sakura. "I appreciate the help."

"The girl's dorm is right through that door," said Robert, pointing to a door on the right.

Alex hefted the suitcase and followed Sakura.

****************

About a minute later, Alex and Sakura reached Sakura's dorm. As they entered, Alex noticed that Sakura's room looked almost exactly like his dorm.

"Just put the suitcase anywhere in the sitting room," said Sakura. Alex left it next to the coffee table.

After leaving the other suitcase in her bedroom, Sakura turned to Alex and smiled.

"I really appreciate you going to the trouble of helping me out," said Sakura, blushing slightly. "I wish there was something I could do to repay you."

"Oh, you don't have to do that!" stuttered Alex. "It was no big de...."

Just then, the sound of a girl screaming could be heard through the open window.

"What the heck was that?!" said Alex.

"Sounds like someone's in trouble!" exclaimed Sakura.

"Whoever it is, we'd better go help them!" said Alex. Alex and Sakura quickly ran down the stairs, and headed out through the back door of the dorm toward the direction of the scream.

****************

Alex and Sakura headed out to field on the edge of the island just behind the dorm, where the scream had come from. As they arrived, they were greeted with a horrifying sight.

A Nidoking had picked up a Teddiursa by the top of the head, and was punching it repeatedly. A short distance away, there was a girl with short, brown hair and freckles kneeled on the ground, trying to call the Teddiursa back into its Pokéball. However, every time she tried, the Nidoking would jerk the Teddiursa out of the way to avoid the beam, and would then continue to punch it. Behind the Nidoking, Kamon stood there, staring at the girl and the two Pokémon with the same cold stare he'd used on the students at the greeting ceremony.

"Stop it, please!" yelled the girl tearfully as she continued her futile attempts to call her Teddiursa back. "The battle's over! You won! Please, just let Teddiursa go!"

"No," responded Kamon coldly, then stared at Nidoking and pointed toward the ground. Nidoking nodded, then threw Teddiursa to the ground, and stomped on it. The girl kept trying to call it back, but Nidoking kept pushing Teddiursa out of the way with its foot.

"Please stop it," cried the girl. "I don't want Teddiursa to be hurt anymore. Why are you doing this?"

"Because you and your Pokémon both deserve it," said Kamon. "Your Pokémon deserves it for being weak, and you deserve it for taking in such a weak Pokémon. Seeing bleeding-heart trainers like you who only care about being nice to Pokémon makes me wanna puke." He turned to Nidoking. "Nidoking, show this little twit what I think of her pathetic little Pokémon." Nidoking nodded, took its foot off of Teddiursa, and prepared to punch it as hard as it could.

Just then, Alex and Sakura arrived on the scene. Upon seeing Nidoking preparing for one more assault on the helpless Teddiursa, a look of anger crossed his face.

"Okay, that's enough! Phanpy, use Tackle attack!" shouted Alex as he threw his Pokéball. Phanpy emerged, and slammed into Nidoking's face hard. Nidoking dropped Teddiursa, and the brown-haired girl called it back into its Pokéball. She sat there for a moment, clutching the Pokéball tightly and sobbing. Sakura ran over to her, knelt down, and placed a hand on her shoulder.

"It's all right now," said Sakura gently. "Everything will be fine. Can you tell us what happened?"

"Well, I was just taking a walk around the island, when all of a sudden, that Kamon guy came out of nowhere and demanded that I battle him. When I said no, he sent his Nidoking after me. It tried to hit me with Poison Sting, but it missed. He told me to battle him or else. So, I did. I sent out Teddiursa, and we tried out best, but we just couldn't beat his Nidoking. I tried to call it back after I lost, but before I could, he sent his Nidoking to grab Teddiursa, and it....and it......" The freckled girl finally broke into tears.

"Don't worry about a thing," said Sakura. "You're both safe now."

"You should get your Teddiursa back to the Pokémon Center so Nurse Joy can treat it," said Alex. "We'll hand the rest here."

The girl sniffed a couple times and wiped her eyes. "Okay, I will. Thank you." She ran off in the direction of the Pokémon Center, still clutching Teddiursa's Pokéball.

"Well now, wasn't that sweet?" said Kamon from behind them. Alex and Sakura got up to face him, both looking very angry.

"Shut it, you scumbag!" shouted Alex. "I can't believe anyone could be so heartless! What were you playing at, attacking an innocent girl like that?!"

"Beating up on a helpless Pokémon is bad enough, but sending your Pokémon to attack another human is just....unforgivable!" shouted Sakura. "How could you?"

"Hmph. It was her own bad luck," Kamon sneered. "She just happened to bump into me while I was in a bad mood. Besides, she reminded me of those losers back at that stupid party. All happy and huggy-kissy with their Pokémon. It made me wanna sic Nidoking on the lot of them."

"That's horrible!" exclaimed Sakura.

"Just because you've got a problem with the other Fire Red students, you think that's an excuse to bully some innocent girl?" yelled Alex.

"To me, it's as good a reason as any," said Kamon. "I hate the weak. Pokémon, trainers, it doesn't matter who or what. I despise them all. And judging from what I saw of the video of you entrance exam battle, you and your Pokémon are just as weak and pathetic as the rest."

"Oh, yeah?!" said Alex. "Well, if you think you're so tough, why don't you try picking on someone your own size?!"

"You mean like you?" asked Kamon.

"Yeah, like me," answered Alex. "Come on, let's battle!

"That sounds like a challenge to me," said Kamon with a nasty smirk. "Well, I doubt you'll be any more entertaining than that other weak girl, but if you wanna volunteer to be my next punching bag, be my guest."

"We'll just see about that, Kamon!" said Alex. "Phanpy, I choose you!"

Phanpy, who had been watching from a short distance away after saving Teddiursa, quickly ran to Alex's side. With a yell of "Phan! Phanpy Phan!", it stared down Nidoking as the Pokémon and their trainers assumed their battle positions.

Alex turned to Sakura. "Sakura, you'd better stand back. This may get a little rough." Sakura nodded, and stepped back a few feet. As the two trainers and their Pokémon as they prepared to face off, Sakura's expression was one of concern.

"I'm ready anytime you are," said Kamon. "That puny little Phanpy looks like it couldn't battle its way out of a wet paper bag. Don't get all weepy on me when it ends up like that Teddiursa."

"Underestimating your opponent can be a big mistake," said Alex with a smile. "My Pokémon may be little, but they pack a big punch!"

"Well, if you're so confident, I'll let you make the first move," said Kamon. "Come and get me, if you can."

"I'll be glad to!" exclaimed Alex. "Phanpy, start things off with Tackle attack!" Phanpy charged toward Nidoking at full speed.

"Nidoking! Block that with Poison Jab!" Nidoking punched Phanpy hard as it approached, its fist glowing purple. Phanpy flew back a few feet, but landed on it feet.

"That was pathetic!" laughed Kamon. "You call that an attack?"

"No, I call THIS an attack!" said Alex. "Phanpy, Earthquake!"

Phanpy reared up, and with a cry of "Phanpyyyyyyy!", it slammed its forelegs into the ground, causing it to shake. Nidoking stumbled, and fell to its knees.

"Now, Phanpy, use Take Down while it's off-balance!"

"Phaaaaaanpy!" yelled Phanpy as it charged toward Nidoking again. This time, the attack connected, and Nidoking fell to the ground.

That was an awesome move, Sakura thought to herself. Nidoking's partly Poison-type, so Phanpy's Earthquake did quite a bit of damage. And using Take Down while it was unbalanced helped weaken it even more.

"Get up, you clumsy oaf!" yelled Kamon. "Do something right for once, and pummel that pipsqueak!" Nidoking struggled to its feet, and reassumed its battle position. "Okay, so maybe you do have something resembling a backbone. Well, let's how you like this! Nidoking, use Thrash!"

Nidoking charged in with its arms flailing, but Alex and Phanpy didn't flinch. Just as Nidoking reached Phanpy, Alex yelled, "Phanpy, use Defense Curl!" Phanpy glowed red, and curled up into a ball. Nidoking pummeled Phanpy hard, but Phanpy managed to endure the hits. Nidoking landed one last punch, and sent Phanpy flying into the air.

"Nice work, Phanpy!" shouted Alex happily! "Now, use Rollout attack!"

Phanpy curled up again, and began rolling toward Nidoking at top speed.

"Please, like that's gonna do anything," sneered Kamon. "Nidoking, block that worthless attack with another Poison Jab." Nidoking's fist glowed purple again, and it punched Phanpy, sending it flying.

"We've got him right where we want him, Phanpy!" said Alex. "Use Rollout again!"

Phanpy landed on the ground, still rolling, and rolled straight on toward Nidoking again, who once again sent it flying with Poison Jab.

"Awesome, Phanpy!" said Alex. "Just keep using Rollout!"

"And what exactly do you hope to accomplish with that weak attack?" sneered Kamon.

"Oh, you'll find out soon enough," smirked Alex.

Alex, what are you thinking?, thought Sakura. If you keep this up, Phanpy won't last much longer.

As Phanpy continued to use Rollout and Nidoking continued to block it with Poison Jab, Kamon became more and more arrogant, Sakura became more and more worried, and Alex became more and more confident. However, after Phanpy's fifth Rollout was blocked, Sakura began to notice something.

After blocking the fifth Rollout, Nidoking began clutching its arm in pain. It was at that moment that both Kamon and Sakura realized what Alex had been planning all along. Kamon became very angry, but Sakura became very impressed.

Now I get it!, thought Sakura. [/i]Alex is wearing down Nidoking's strength by using Kamon's arrogance in his favor. Kamon doesn't believe that Phanpy's attacks can do any real damage, so he thinks that by just blocking that Rollout every time, he's safe. But what Kamon doesn't realize is that Rollout does double the damage every time it connects, making it harder and harder for Nidoking to block it. Alex knew that, and had Phanpy keep using Rollout, because he knew Kamon would be too wrapped up in his own ego to notice the accumulating damage! And since Phanpy's strong against Poison attacks, it has the stamina to take the hits and keep going![/i] Sakura blushed a little. He really is an awesome trainer.....

"Okay, Phanpy! One last Rollout attack!" called Alex. Phanpy rolled toward Nidoking faster than before. Nidoking attempted to block it again, but was unable to react in time. Phanpy's Rollout slammed hard into Nidoking's gut, and sent it flying into a tree. Nidoking fell to the ground again.

"Nidoking, get up!" yelled Kamon. "I SAID GET UP, YOU OVERGROWN, UGLY, EXCUSE FOR A POKEMON!" Nidoking struggled to its feet, greatly weakened.

As Phanpy ended its Rollout and landed on its feet, Alex noticed that it, too, had taken a lot of damage.

"Good work, Phanpy," said Alex. "Are you okay to keep going?"

"Phanpy Phan!" said Phanpy.

Meanwhile, Sakura became worried again. This could be trouble. Phanpy managed to do a lot of damage to Nidoking, but with that Nidoking's power, Phanpy took a lot of damage too, even with the type advantage. If Phanpy takes one more strong hit, Alex'll lose for sure.

That Nidoking may be worn out, but so is Phanpy, thought Alex. Kamon'll probably try to end the match with one last power move. Which means that my only chance is to get in one last attack before he does.

"Okay wimp, I'm done playing around!" shouted Kamon angrily. "It's time to put you in your place once and for all!"

"This is it, Phanpy!" said Alex. We're gonna have to put everything we've got into one last attack!" Phanpy stood at the ready.

"Nidoking, use Megahorn!" Nidoking's horn glowed white as it charged in headfirst.

"Phanpy, use Double-Edge!" Phanpy ran towards Nidoking full force, white streaks flying off of its body.

The two Pokemon collided, creating an explosion of white light. When the smoke cleared, both Phanpy and Nidoking had fallen unconscious.

"Phanpy and Nidoking are both unable to battle! This match is a draw!" said a voice from behind them. Alex, Sakura, and Kamon turned around to see Robert standing there.

"Well done, Alex!" smiled Robert as he clapped. "Not only was your technique top-notch, but it's clear that you've raised your Phanpy well."

"Robert, what are you doing here?" asked Sakura.

Robert walked over to the unconscious Phanpy and picked it up. "Well, when I saw the two of you running out of here in such a hurry, I got worried and decided to follow you. I saw that other girl run past me on my way up here, but I didn't get a chance to talk to her. I caught up with you a while ago, but I didn't want to interrupt the battle." Robert handed Phanpy to Alex. "Don't worry; it doesn't look too badly hurt. But you should have Nurse Joy treat it, just to be safe."

"I will. Thank you," said Alex as he called Phanpy back into its Pokéball.

Robert smiled at Alex and Sakura. "I'm terribly sorry you both had to get mixed up in this on your very first day here, and I do appreciate the both of you coming out here to help out. You have my gratitude."

"You're welcome," said Alex and Sakura together.

Robert then walked over to Nidoking, knelt down, and gently stroked its forehead. He then turned to Kamon, his smile quickly vanishing. "And as for you - Kamon, I believe your name was? I don't know what happened up here, but I can tell you did something to that poor girl that made her quite upset. Since you're new here, I'll let you off this time with a warning. But know this; harassment of other students will not be tolerated at this academy. Is that understood?"

"Yeah, sure, whatever," muttered Kamon as he called Nidoking back into its Pokéball. As the beam drew it back in, Kamon stared at the Pokéball for about a second with a look of pure disgust on his face. He then shrank it and put it back on his belt.

"Listen up, Alex!" said Kamon. "You only managed to tie with me because your puny little Phanpy got lucky. I'd never lose to fools like you who babble about being nice to Pokémon. All I care about are strong Pokémon that can win. There's only one thing in this world that I want - to become the world's greatest Pokémon trainer! And as far as I'm concerned, weaklings like you are just speed bumps on my road to becoming the greatest."

Alex just stared at Kamon with a look that said "You want a piece of me? Come and get it."

"So long, Alex. We'll settle this some other time," said Kamon as he turned and left.

No sooner had Kamon left, than shouts could be heard from behind the three.

"AAAALEEEEX!" Alex, Sakura, and Robert turned around to see Macey and Tony running toward them.

"Hey, what are you two doing here?" asked Alex.

"Joe got worried when you didn't come back, so we volunteered to look for you," said Macey.

"Nurse Joy told us you came out here with Sakura, so we came out here to try and find you," said Tony.

"Well, this has certainly turned out to be an eventful evening," said Robert. "But it is getting quite late. You three should probably get back to your dorm now, before Joe gets any more worried."

"We will," said Alex, Macey, and Tony together.

"We should probably head back to our dorm, too, Sakura," said Robert. "The others must be wondering where we are."

"Sure thing, Robert," said Sakura. She turned to Alex and smiled. "Thanks again for all your help, Alex! I hope we see each other in class tomorrow!"

"I hope so, too!" called Alex. "See you around campus, Sakura!"

Alex and Sakura waved to each other as the two groups parted ways.

***************

"What took you so long, anyway?" asked Macey as they reached the tram station.

"Yeah, it couldn't take THAT long to deliver some luggage," said Tony.

"It's a long story, you guys," said Alex wearily. "I'll tell you all about it tomorrow."

As the three rode the tram back to the Fire Red dorm, Alex's thoughts were on many things.

As he thought of his meeting with Stewart and Kiruka, Alex wondered what other kinds of trainers he would meet during his years her.

As he thought of his trip to the Leaf Green dorm with Sakura, Alex found himself hoping he would see her again.

As he thought of his intense battle against Kamon, Alex had a feeling that he had just met his first real rival.

However, out of all the thoughts that ran through his head, one thought remained prominent above all else.

His new life at Pokémon Academy would be anything but dull.

And now, we begin Chapter 3

*****************

The sun slowly rose over Hephaistos Island, bathing the Fire Red dorm in its warm glow. Inside room 67, bedroom B in the boys' dorm, sunlight filtered through the window. A gray Eevee sleeping on a beanbag pillow gently awoke as it was bathed in the warm sunlight. As it yawned and stretched, it looked up to see its trainer, Alex Reed, sleeping soundly. With a smile on its face, Eevee leapt up onto the bed, and gently licked Alex on the cheek. Alex awoke to see his best friend sitting there, and gently stroked its fur.

"Good morning, Eevee," smiled Alex. Alex sat up, yawned, and stretched. "Did you sleep well last night?"

"Vee!" answered the Eevee happily. "Vui Vui?"

"I did too, thanks," said Alex. Eevee leapt into Alex's arms as he embraced it in a warm hug.

Alex climbed out of bed, and put Eevee on the floor. He then took a Pokéball from his desk, expanded it, and called out his Marril.

"Well, guys, this is it! Our new home away from home!" said Alex. "Ready for our first day of class?!"

"Yeah!" said the Pokémon in their respective chants.

After taking a few minutes to wash up and brush his teeth, Alex changed into his new school uniform. After strapping on his backpack, he put his Pokédex and Pokégear in his pocket, and strapped his Pokéballs on his belt. (except for Eevee's, which he placed on a chain around his neck)

As he left his bedroom, he noticed that Tony was nowhere to be found. Alex assumed that he had already left, and left the dorm.

*****************

As Alex got to the lobby of the Pokémon Center, he found Nurse Joy at the front desk, and headed over.

"Good morning, Nurse Joy," said Alex politely. "How's my Phanpy doing?"

"Ah, good morning, Alex!" said Nurse Joy. "I was just wondering where you were. Your Phanpy's fully recovered and looking great! Wait here a moment."

Nurse Joy took a Pokéball from a nearby healing machine, and handed it to Alex.

"Thanks, Nurse Joy," said Alex as he accepted the ball.

"There's still some time before classes start. Why don't you and your Pokémon head for the cafeteria and get some breakfast?" Nurse Joy pointed to a door just to the left of the front desk. "It's right through there."

"Thank you, we will!" said Alex as he ran off.

***********************

Moments later, Alex was wandering the cafeteria, carrying a tray with pancakes, orange juice, and three bowls of Pokémon food. Just as he began looking for a place to sit, he caught sight of Tony and Macey, who smiled and waved to him. Alex quickly ran to join them.

Moments later, the three new students and their Pokémon were happily enjoying breakfast.

"Well, this is it! Our first day of school!" said Macey excitedly. "I can't wait to see what our classes are like!"

"Hey Al, I almost forgot," said Tony in his usual Brooklyn accent. "Is yer Phanpy okay after last night?"

"Not to worry. Nurse Joy fixed it up good as new," said Alex as he patted Phanpy.

"Dat's good ta hear!" said Tony. "Too bad we never got a chance to finish our battle."

"Don't worry, Tony. I'm sure we'll get a chance to battle sooner or later," said Macey.

Just as Alex had finished his last pancake, Nurse Joy's voice could be heard over the PA.

"Attention all Fire Red students. Your class schedules have arrived. Please come to the main lobby to pick up your schedules at the front desk"

*********************

After picking up their schedules, Alex, Tony, and Macey joined a group of Fire Red students on board a tram headed for the school. The three looked their schedules over.

"Well, it looks like we've all got homeroom with Joe first period," said Macey.

"Okay, let's see what we got here," said Tony. "History, geography, and......hey, youse guys! Ya won't believe who's teachin' biology!"

Alex and Macey looked at the schedule.

"I KNEW that guy at the opening ceremonies looked familiar!" exclaimed Alex.

9:00 AM - Fire Red Homeroom

Alex, Macey, and Tony were seated among a group of other Fire Red students, chatting away. Just then, Joe entered the room, still in his red gym suit. The students immediately took their seats.

"Good morning, class," said Joe. "Welcome to your first Fire Red homeroom class. I'm Joe Takahashi, in case anyone missed the opening ceremonies. Now, let's start with roll call."

Joe called the student's names off of a list, and they each answered "here" or "present" as their name was called.

"Well, it looks like everyone's here," said Joe. "Now, for the first item on our agenda, let's start off with a basic explanation of an average school day. This is just to give you a basic idea of what your classes will be like, as well as to cover some basic school rules that you may or may not have already read in your student manual."

For the next twenty minutes or so, Joe went on to explain the different classes and teachers, how breaks and lunches went, where students were and weren't allowed during certain hours, and other basic rules.

"Okay kids, it's around this time that I bring up any important issues that need attention,” said Joe as he looked at his clipboard. "There's only a few, so let's go over them now. “Um, Alex Reed?"

"Yes, Joe?" Alex answered.

"I was checking your current Pokémon team, and I noticed that you don't have a dorm Pokémon."

Alex got a puzzled look on his face. "A dorm Pokemon? What's that?"

"Heh heh. I'm guessing you wouldn't know, being a first-year and all,” Joe chuckled. "So I guess I'd better explain, just to bring everyone up to speed."

"Basically, it's like this," explained Joe. "The dorm Pokémon is one of Pokémon Academy's most sacred traditions. Each student uses at least one Pokémon whose type matches the dorm the student is in, known as your "dorm Pokémon". For example, since our dorm is Fire Red, each of us has to have at least one fire-type Pokémon. Not only does it help to define each dorm as an individual, but the types for each dorm are often known to suit the students' individual battle styles. In other words, it serves as a dorm mascot, and also as sort of a mirror of the trainer's personality."

"I see," said Alex. "So, how do I get a dorm Pokémon? Does the school issue you one?"

"Nope," replied Joe. "Ya gotta catch it yourself, my boy."

Alex looked a bit confused. "Catch one? But where?"

Joe chuckled. "You forget, my boy, we're on an island CHAIN. The Academy and dorm islands aren't the only islands around here. There's a ton of other islands around here that are just teeming with wild Pokémon for you to catch!"

"That's awesome!" exclaimed Alex happily. "So, how do I get to the other islands?"

"All the dorm islands have docks where you can rent boats," explained Joe. "They're free for all students to use. But you might wanna wait till this weekend when there's no class. That way, you'll have a lot more time."

"I'll do that! Thanks!"

Joe cleared his throat, and looked at his clipboard again. "Anyway, before we move on, are there any questions?"

10:00 AM - Pokemon Biology

Alex and Tony took their seats among a group of students from other dorms. As they sat down, Alex caught sight of Sakura. Upon seeing him, she smiled and waved to him. Blushing a bit, Alex smiled and waved back. Just then, the spiky-haired, lab-coated boy from the opening ceremonies entered the room. Alex and Tony's jaws hit the floor.

"NO WAY! IT REALLY IS YOU!" shouted Alex and Tony at the same time.

"Umm....me who?" asked the boy.

"I thought you looked familiar at the opening ceremonies!" exclaimed Alex. "You're Gary Oak!"

"I've heard all about youse!" exclaimed Tony. "Yer dat hotshot trainer from Pallet Town who was all over da news a few years back! Ya made the top 32 in the Kanto League, and you were in da Victory Tournament in the Johto League!"

"Yeah, and to top it all off, you're the grandson of Professor Oak! And EVERYONE who knows Pokémon knows Professor Oak!" said Alex.

"Well, yeah. That's me," laughed Gary nervously.

"But no one's heard from you ever since the Silver Conference," said Alex. "Whatever happened to you?"

"Yeah, where'd you disappear to?" asked Tony.

"And what are you doing as a teacher here?"

"And whatever happened to all of your Pokemon?"

"And what...."

"Whoa, whoa, slow down, you two!" exclaimed Gary. "No offense, but I really don't feel like telling my life story on the first day of class!"

"Um, sorry," said Alex and Tony.

"*ahem* Anyway, as you all know, I'm Gary Oak, and I'll be your teacher for Basic Pokémon Biology. Now, to begin...."

Gary spent most of the class talking about the main goals of the course, and what they would be covering over the course of the year. Fifty minutes later, the bell rang.

"Well, that's all, everyone. I'll see you all tomorrow," said Gary as the students left the classroom. "Oh, Alex and Tony, just one thing."

"What is it?" asked Alex.

"If you guys really wanna know how I became a teacher here, we'll talk about it over a cup of tea sometime."

"Sure thing," smiled Alex.

11:00 AM - Pokémon History

Alex was seated in a classroom that looked more like the study of a famous scholar. The green walls were lined with books, paintings, and various artifacts of distant lands. This time, Alex was seated next to Macey, and the two were chatting away about various things. Just then, the silver-haired boy that Alex recognized as Neroli sat in the desk next to him.

"Hey there, how's it going?" said Alex with a smile, but Neroli just scowled at him and turned away, ignoring him. Alex and Macey were both annoyed by Neroli's lack of civility, and both stuck their tongues out at him.

"Man, what a jerk!" said Macey. "Some people just have no courtesy!"

"Let it go, Macey," said Alex. "If the guy wants to be antisocial, let him be."

Just then, a chubby old man in a stylish brown suit entered the room. He was bald, but had a shaggy gray beard, and carried a Calabash pipe in his mouth. As he sat down at his fancy oak desk, he looked at the students and smiled.

"Good morning, everyone, good morning!" said the man happily. "Welcome one and all to Pokémon History! Allow me to introduce myself. I am Professor Gordon Bennington, and for the next ten months, I shall be your guide in this strange, mysterious realm that we call Pokémon History. As you know, one of the main goals of this school is to help you learn more about Pokémon and the world they inhabit. But in order to understand what they are, is it important to know what they were. And that, my friends, is where I come in. I consider my duty - no - my sacred mission - to help you learn about all the important parts that Pokémon played in the history of the world."

Bennington took a moment to place his pipe into a drawer in his desk, then went on. "Now, before we get started, let's see.....yes, you there, the silver-haired boy!" Bennington pointed to Neroli.

Neroli looked up in surprise. "What, me?"

"Yes, you," said Bennington. "I hear you have a strong Blastoise. Would you mind terribly showing it to us for just a moment?"

"I don't think that's a good idea, Professor," said Neroli. "Blastoise isn't exactly people-friendly, if you know what I mean."

"Oh, come now,"chuckled Bennington. "Humor an old man."

"Fine, but don't say I didn't warn you," muttered Neroli. He took a Pokéball from his belt and opened it, releasing his Blastoise.

"Blaaaaaaast....," said Blastoise warningly as it eyed the students, looking like it was ready to start attacking at the slightest provocation.

"My, my, what a strong Blastoise," said Bennington. "It seems you've raised it well. Now, watch this."

Bennington reached into his pocket, and took out a amulet. He then stepped forward, and placed it around Blastoise's neck. He then took a statue of a skinny, bald man in a loincloth, and walked over to Neroli.

"Here, hold this for a moment," he said as he passed the statue to Neroli. He then returned to his desk, and smirked at Blastoise. "Come on, you big lummox! I dare you to hit me with your Water Gun! Although I bet you couldn't hit the broadside of a blimp!"

"BLAAAAAASTOISE!" Blastoise yelled angrily, and shot a Water Gun directly at Bennington. However, as the stream of water got within three inches from Bennington's face, it suddenly stopped, changed direction, and splashed Neroli in the face. All the students laughed, even Blastoise. Neroli, however, was NOT amused.

"You see that, students?" smiled Bennington. "That was the Torrent Guide, an ancient artifact from the Pokongo Tribe! When a water Pokémon wears that amulet, all of its water attacks will head directly toward whoever is holding the statue. It was use by the tribesmen to help their water Pokémon track down thieves. And that was just a sample of what you can look forward to during your days here!"

The students all applauded, but Neroli looked furious. "Hey, you jerk! I don't know what your problem is, but you've got a lot of nerve humiliating me like that!"

"Now, now. Calm down. I didn't mean any harm. It was just a little joke," smiled Bennington as he took a towel from the back of his chair. "Honestly, you really shouldn't let little things like this bother you so much." Bennington handed the towel to Neroli as he removed the pendant and took back the statue. Neroli scowled at Bennington for a second, then called Blastoise back into its Pokéball and began drying his hair with the towel.

"All right everyone, settle down," said Bennington. "It's time to begin our first lesson. Now, if you'll all turn on your desk computers......"

Alex and Macey exchanged puzzled looks.

"Er, press the white button on your desk."

Alex and Macey did so, and in an instant, a panel on the desk opened up, revealing a laptop computer built into the desk. Their faces lit up with amazement.

"Now then, everyone, log in to your student accounts, and we shall begin our exciting journey into the past!

******************

The next few days settled into a comfortable routine. In addition to homeroom, History, and Biology, Alex's classes also consisted of Geology, Literature, and a few others. At 3:00, when classes let out, Alex's days consisted of fooling around on the Internet, enjoying meals with Tony and Macey, watching TV in the lounge of the Fire Red dorm's Pokémon Center (he especially enjoyed watching old reruns of The Lone Pokémon Ranger) and of course, Pokémon battles with any students who happened to be in the mood.

Most of his battles were against first and second-years, but occasionally, he'd work up the guts to battle a third or fourth-year. Alex quickly proved himself to be one of the better battlers out of the first-years, having won more than half of his battles. Of course, he eventually finished the battle against Macey and Tony that he started back at the welcome party, and won handily. Sometimes during his battles, Sakura would come out to watch, which Alex enjoyed immensely. And during a couple of battles at the Thunder Yellow dorm, Alex could have sworn he saw Kiruka watching him from behind a tree.

However, the foremost thing on his mind was his upcoming excursion on Saturday. Alex was looking forward to hunting for a dorm Pokémon, but he was also a bit nervous.

That Friday, Alex was discussing this with Tony and Macey during lunch.

"So, ya ready for yer big expedition tomorrow?" asked Tony.

"Well, yeah, but I'm also a bit nervous," said Alex.

"What's to be nervous about?" asked Macey. "You're just going up there to catch a Pokémon. It's not exactly rocket science."

"Well, here's the thing," said Alex. "Phanpy and Marril are the only Pokémon I've ever caught." Tony and Macey exchanged puzzled looks.

"What? You've been journeying for a year, and you've only got three Pokémon?" asked Macey.

"But that don't make any sense," said Tony. "Yer an awesome battler and yer Pokemon are plenty tough. You shouldn't have any trouble catching yerself a full team."

"I guess that's why I've never caught any others," said Alex. "Eevee, Marril, and Phanpy were all so awesome on my first journey, I figured I didn't need any other Pokémon. So, I never really bothered."

"Well, it's a good thing yer goin' on this trip, Al," said Tony. "Cause I got a feeling dat pretty soon, yer gonna need more than just three Pokémon."

"Three Pokémon is good for casual battling, but before you know it, you could be up against some heavy hitters, and it's always best to be prepared," said Macey.

"Yeah, you guys are probably right," said Alex. "Besides, if I'm gonna be a pro like Drake someday, It's gonna take more than three Pokémon to do it." Alex smiled as he clutched the Pokéball hanging from the chain on his neck.

Just then, a Beautifly flew into the mess hall, carrying an envelope. For a moment, it circled around, as if it were looking for something. Just then, it caught sight of Alex, and flew toward him.

"Hey, it's a Beautifly," said Tony. "I wonder what it's doin' here."

Just then, with a chirp of "Beauuuuutiflyyy....", Beautifly landed on Alex's head.

"Hey there, what's up?" asked Alex.

"Beauuuuutifly," chirped Beautifly again as it tickled Alex's cheek with its long nose.

"Aww, how cute!" exclaimed Macey. "It really likes you!"

"Hey, take it easy!" laughed Alex as he patted Beautifly. "You sure are friendly, aren't you?"

Just then, Beautifly hopped off of Alex's head, and hovered in front of him, holding out the envelope it was carrying.

"Is that for me?" asked Alex.

"Beautifly," Beautifly chirped as it nodded. Alex accepted the envelope, and opened it. Tony and Macey leaned a bit closer as Alex began to read it.

Dear Alex,

Hi, this is Sakura. I heard from one of my new friends in Leaf Green, who heard it from one of her friends in Fire Red, that you're going out this Saturday to catch your dorm Pokémon.

Well, it just so happens that I don't have a dorm Pokémon either, and I'm going out this Saturday to catch one, too.

Anyway, I was kinda sorta hoping that if it's all right with you, that we could sorta maybe explore the islands together? I'm a bit out of practice catching wild Pokémon, and it'd be great if we could help each other out.

If you're interested, my Pokégear number is on the back. Call me to set up a meeting time.

Hope to see you soon!

Sakura

On the bottom-right corner of the note, Alex saw a cute little picture of a Sakura chibi-head, smiling and giving a peace sign.

"Well, dat's something we didn't expect," said Tony.

"So, you gonna let her go with you?" asked Macey.

"Well, it couldn't hurt. I'm saying yes!" said Alex. He flipped over the note, then took out his Pokégear and entered the number.

**************************

The next morning, Alex arrived at the Leaf Green dorm on Demetra Island. Since it was the weekend, he decided not to wear his school uniform. Instead, he wore a Hawaiian shirt decorated with Pokéball insignias, a pair of slightly bulky jeans, and sneakers. On his back was a red backpack. As he entered the lobby of the Pokémon Center, he couldn't help but notice that there were flowers and potted plants everywhere, and recycle bins placed in each corner of the room. Alex looked at the clock on his Pokégear.

Hmm, 10:00, Alex thought. Sakura should be here any minute.

"Hey there, can I help you?" said a slightly dreamy voice from behind him.

Alex turned around and saw Nurse Joy standing there. However, this Nurse Joy looked different from the Fire Red Nurse Joy. She wore pink flowers in her hair, and a pendant in the shape of a peace sign around her neck.

"Say, you must be one of the new kids from Fire Red," said Nurse Joy. "What brings you to this humble house of peace and love?"

"Oh, I'm just here to meet someone," said Alex.

"Say, you wouldn't happen to be Alex, would you?"

"Umm, yes, I am."

"Groovy!" smiled Nurse Joy. "Sakura said you'd be coming by! She should be here in just a minute."

As if on cue, just then, Sakura's voice was heard from a back room. "Alex, is that you? Hold on, I'll be right there!"

A moment later, Sakura entered the lobby. It seemed that she had decided not to wear her uniform either. Instead, she wore a bright pink blouse with a blue ribbon around the collar, and a blue miniskirt. On her shoulder, she was carrying a blue bag with a cherry blossom sticker on the side.

Wow, thought Alex to himself, turning a bit red. She is just so cute....

"Sorry I'm late," said Sakura. "I was just putting some last-minute touches on this" She held up a bento box wrapped in a pink cloth decorated with flowers. "We may be out there a while, so I figured I'd make a lunch for us to share later."

"Oh, that's okay," said Alex. "You never know when you might get hungry on a long trip. So, you wanna head out to the boat dock?"

"Sure thing! Let's go!" said Sakura, and the two left the Pokémon Center together.

"Have fun, you two! And be careful!" called Nurse Joy as she waved goodbye to them.

After showing their IDs to the dock supervisor and renting out a small motorboat, Alex and Sakura were on their way. After weaving in and out of the Academy islands for a while just for fun, they eventually headed east toward the Natur Islands cluster. Alex and Sakura had both researched the islands the night before, and found that the Natur cluster was one of many areas in the Rosary Islands that had a large population of wild Pokémon. They agreed to try that one first, since it was closest.

http://www.hotlinkfiles.com/files/854866_dsrnk/03._tabidachi.mp3

About an hour later, Alex and Sakura were exploring the first island in the cluster, Ein Island. It was a beautiful meadow dotted with trees and bushes here and there. Alex and Sakura were hidden in one of the bushes, surveying the area through binoculars. As they watched, they marveled at the numerous Pokémon that wandered the meadow.

"Wow, check it out!" exclaimed Alex. "A swarm of Venomoth! I've never seen one before!"

"And look up in that tree!" exclaimed Sakura. "There's a whole bunch of Slakoth hanging out in there! I never expected to see Pokémon from the Hoenn region all the way out here!"

"Whoa! Look up in that tree over there, Sakura!" said Alex excitedly, pointing to a tree next to the Slakoth. "I've never seen those Pokémon before!"

"Hey, I think those are Pachirisu!" said Sakura happily. "That's one of those Pokémon from the Sinnoh reigon!"

'There really are tons of Pokémon on these islands!" said Alex. "Too bad none of these are the type we're looking for."

Alex and Sakura spent two more hours searching the island. They didn't find any fire-types or grass-types, but they were having so much fun exploring the island, they didn't mind all that much. At precisely 3PM, a loud rumbling sound was heard. Alex and Sakura looked up, and saw that it was coming from the volcano at the center of Zwei Island, which was surrounded by a thick forest. Black smoke was pouring from the top in huge amounts.

"Hey, I've got an idea!" said Alex. "Why don't we check out Zwei Island? There's bound to be some fire Pokémon living near that volcano, and I bet we'll find some grass Pokémon in that forest, too!"

"Sounds like a plan!" said Sakura. "Let's check it out!"

******************

Minutes later, Alex and Sakura docked their boat on the shore of Zwei Island. Shortly after entering the forest, they were treated to the sound of Sakura's stomach growling.

"Heh, heh. I guess all that walking worked up an appetite," Sakura laughed. "I know it's a bit early, but do you wanna have lunch now?"

"Sounds good!" Just then, Alex's stomach growled, too. "And I think my stomach agrees..."

*************************

Moments later, Alex and Sakura were sitting on a pair of rocks in a small forest clearing, with small rays of sunlight filtering through the trees above them. Sakura had opened up her bento box, and Alex marveled at its contents.

"Wow, this is a great lunch! There's omelets, croquettes, meatballs, Octillery-shaped wieners, and....hey! Apple Bunearys!" Alex picked one up and looked at it fondly. "I haven't had these since I was in kindergarten!"

"Thanks, but it's not that special," smiled Sakura as she blushed. "I just threw together what I could."

The two began eating, taking in the fresh air and the scenery. About halfway through their meal, Sakura suddenly spoke.

"Umm, Alex?"

"What's up, Sakura?"

http://www.hotlinkfiles.com/files/854864_w82xv/nosobade-Ballade.instantver..mp3

"I....just wanted to thank you for coming along with me on this trip. You've really been a big help."

"Well, I haven't really done all that much....."

"No, you have. You've helped me out a lot just by being here."

"Whaddya mean?"

"Well, it's like this. Back home in Ecruteak City, I have four older sisters. We're all members of a tea ceremony group."

Alex nodded. He'd remembered hearing about the four beautiful Tea Ceremony Sisters during his journey through the northern reigons of Johto. He'd never actually been to Ecruteak City, though.

"Well, I was considered, for lack of a better term, the runt of the family. They were way better then me at a lot of stuff. Not just at training Pokémon, but at dancing and the tea ceremony. Everyone always focused on them and ignored me. And they NEVER passed up an opportunity to remind me of it. I've lost count of how many jokes I was the butt of."

"Wow, that really stinks," said Alex.

"Yeah, but there wasn't much I could do about it, because for the most part, they were right. I just didn't really have that much talent. But I don't hate my sisters for it. They really do care about me, but they sometimes have a funny way of showing it."

"Really?"

"Yeah. We meant more to each other than anything, and I could always count on them to be there for me when it mattered. I still hated living in their shadow, and I couldn't wait to get out and start my own journey. But my sisters didn't think I was ready, and deep down, I knew they were right."

"So, what changed between you?"

"Well, I met some travelling trainers who were passing through Ecruteak, and one of them was a specialist in water Pokémon. We had a lot in common, and we became fast friends. It was thanks to her that I decided to re-dedicate myself to my training so that I could learn more and become stronger. My sisters were a HUGE help in that area, and they helped me out as often as they could. Over the next couple months, I got better and more confident, and finally, my sisters decided I was ready to head out on my own."

"That's good to hear," said Alex. "So, how did your journey go?"

"Better than I could have hoped for. We travelled through a good part of Johto and Hoenn, and my Pokémon and I got a lot of experience." Sakura smiled fondly. "And as my Pokémon and I learned more and got stronger, we won more and more battles. I finally felt like a skilled Pokémon trainer, and that was the greatest feeling in the world. But, well...."

"But what?"

"The thing is, I'm not always as confident as I wanna be. I know I may look really confident during battle, and most of the time, I feel it, too. But there's still a part of me that remembers the old me. Even after all this time, there's still a tiny corner of my heart that remembers the dumb, clumsy Sakura that couldn't do anything right. It's not that bad most of the time, since I do my best not to let it bother me. But it's still there, and it still hurts." Sakura began to look a little depressed "I guess that's why I joined Pokémon Academy in the first place. I wanna become good enough to finally say goodbye to the old me."

Alex just stared at her. "Sakura....."

"And that's why you being here is such a big help. Being at such a famous school, I get really nervous sometimes, and it's making me think more and more of the old me. I didn't think I'd be able to handle coming out here by myself." Sakura suddenly gave Alex a bright, gentle smile. "But with you here, it's not so bad. Going on a trip like this is a lot easier when you have a good friend with you. And it's a lot more fun, too!"

"I'm glad I could help out," said Alex. "And despite what the old you may think, you really are an awesome trainer! Your battle at the entrance exams was proof enough of that! If you sucked as a trainer, you wouldn't even be here!"

"Thanks, Alex. That's really sweet of you."

Alex picked up an omelet with his chopsticks. "So, here's to our newfound friendship!"

Sakura picked up one with hers, too. "And to a successful Pokémon-catching expedition!"

Alex and Sakura tapped their omelets together, and smiled at each other. Just then, they caught sight of something rustling in a nearby bush. A second later, a Torchic and a Chikorita tumbled out.

http://www.hotlinkfiles.com/files/854868_dehef/ru_pocchama_hikozarutoujou__.mp3

"All right, a Torchic! Finally, a fire Pokémon!" said Alex happily. "And look, there's a Chikorita! Looks like we found your grass Pokémon, too!"

"Cool!" said Sakura. "Let's check them out!"

Alex and Sakura opened up their Pokédexes, and scanned the two Pokémon.

Torchic, the Chick Pokémon. Torchic has a small sac in its stomach that stores flame, allowing it to shoot fireballs that are over 1800 degrees Fahrenheit.

Chikorita, the Leaf Pokémon. Chikorita uses the leaf on its head to check humidity and temperature, releasing a pleasant scent as it waves back and forth.

Suddenly, the two Pokémon began sniffing the air. As they wandered toward Alex and Sakura, they caught sight of the bento box, and their faces lit up with smiles.

"Something tells me they were attracted here by the smell of your lunch," said Alex. "It looks to me like they really like it." Sakura just smiled and blushed.

The two Pokémon stared at the bento with a longing expression as they drooled a bit.

"Aww, are you guys hungry?" asked Sakura. "Well, I'll tell you what. We'll share our meal with you if you agree to have a battle with us as soon as you're done eating, okay?"

The two Pokémon gave their approval. Alex and Sakura gave then each an Apple Buneary, some croquettes, and an omelet. The two Pokémon ate happily as the two trainers finished their lunch.

*****************

Moments later, Torchic and Chikorita stood at the edge of the forest clearing, as they prepared to face off against the two human trainers who had challenged them.

"Time to catch our dorm Pokémon!" said Alex. "You ready, Sakura?"

"Ready when you are, Alex!" said Sakura. "Let's do it!"

http://www.hotlinkfiles.com/files/854869_uhlsg/06.ShinSatoshinotheme.mp3

"Marril, I choose you!" shouted Alex as he threw his Pokéball and summoned Marril.

"Beautifly, I choose you!" shouted Sakura as she threw her Pokéball and summoned Beautifly. The two Pokémon gave their cries, and got into battle position.

"Get ready, and GO!" the two shouted together. Marril and Beautifly charged forward toward their opponents.

"Marril, start with a Rollout attack on Torchic!" shouted Alex.

"Beautifly, you use Tackle attack on Chikorita!" shouted Sakura.

Marril curled up into a ball and rolled toward Torchic, while Beautifly flew toward Chikorita at full speed. Torchic and Chikorita quickly dodged, and Marril and Beautifly sped right past them.

"Wow! Those two are fast!" said Sakura.

"Then let's go with Plan B!" said Alex. "Marril, use Water Gun on Torchic!"

"Beautifly, use Gust on Chikorita!" shouted Sakura. Beautifly flapped it wings rapidly, and sent a small tornado spiraling toward Chikorita.

Torchic dodged the Water gun and leaped in front of Chikorita, taking the full blast of the Gust. As Torchic was sent flying backwards, Chikorita leaped forward and slammed into Beautifly with a strong Tackle attack. Torchic quickly recovered from the Gust, and blasted Beautifly with an Ember attack while Chikorita sent a Razor Leaf barrage flying at Marril. The two attacks hit their mark, sending Marril and Beautifly flying into a nearby tree. Marril and Beautifly struggled to their feet, but were both looking a good bit worse for wear, having both been hit by attacks they were weak against.

"Alex, this is bad!" said Sakura. "It's been a long time since I've battled wild Pokémon, and these two are tougher than we thought! What are we gonna do?"

"Don't give up yet, Sakura!" said Alex with a determined smile on his face. "I know we can win this! Remember, whether the Pokémon’s wild or trained, a battle is still a battle! So we just have to treat this like any other battle!" He placed a hand on Sakura's shoulder. "You're an awesome trainer, and we both have awesome Pokémon. So let's use those awesome Pokémon to catch ourselves two more awesome Pokémon!"

"You're right!" Sakura smiled. "If I can beat the Yang Brothers from Blackthorne City, I can win against these guys! Speaking of which, I've got an idea! Mind if Beautifly gives Marril a wing up?

"Not in the slightest," said Alex. "Marril, jump on Beautifly's back!" Marril obeyed, and Beautifly took to the air again.

"Beautifly, fly up into that tree!" called Sakura. Beautifly flew into a thick branch in a tree right above Torchic and Chikorita. A second later, Beautifly emerged, but Marril was gone.

"Okay Beautifly, time for some evasive maneuvers!" called Sakura. Torchic and Chikorita began firing Ember and Razor Leaf attacks at Beautifly, but Beautifly effortlessly dodged the attacks with spins, rolls, and loops. Eventually, the two wild Pokémon became exhausted and frustrated, and it clearly showed on their faces. Just then, Alex's eyes flashes, and he lifted his head toward the branch where Marril had vanished.

"NOW, MARRIL! BUBBLEBEAM ATTACK!" shouted Alex to the treetops. Without warning, Marril leaped out of the branch of the tree above, and as it fell straight down, it fired a barrage of glowing blue bubbles down on Torchic and Chikorita. The bubbles exploded as they hit the ground, knocking the two Pokémon down.

"Quick Beautifly, use Gust!" called Sakura! Beautifly send another mini-tornado flying at Torchic and Chikorita. This time, it hit its mark, and both Pokémon were sent flying backwards. As they hit the ground, they struggled to their feet, both looking tired.

"Great job, Sakura!" said Alex. "We've got 'em on the ropes now!"

"Thanks, Alex!" said Sakura. "Now let's finish it with one final attack!"

"Marril, use Bubblebeam!"

"Beautifly, use Silver Wind!"

The two Pokémon stood next to each other as they launched their attacks, causing the two attacks to merge together into a stream of bubbles and silver-colored air. With their stamina exhausted, Torchic and Chikorita were defenseless, and were both struck dead-on by the combined attack. Seconds later, the two Pokémon fell to the ground unconscious.

"Pokéball, GO!" Alex and Sakura shouted as they threw their empty Pokéballs at the two unconscious Pokeméon. The balls snapped open as they hit their targets, and fired a red beam that drew them inside. The balls closed and fell to the ground, wiggling slightly as the button on the front blinked red. Alex and Sakura watched and waited with baited breath as the two Pokéballs continued to wiggle. After what felt like an eternity, the wiggling stopped, the light went out, and a deep clanging noise was heard, indicating that the capture was successful. With a look of pure joy on their faces, Alex and Sakura ran over to pick up the Pokéballs containing their newly captured Pokémon.

"All right!" said Alex. "I caught a Torchic!"

"Marril maa!" Marril shouted happily!

"I did it!" said Sakura. "I caught a Chikorita!"

"Beauuuuutifly!" Beautifly chirped happily as it perched on Sakura's head.

"Thanks for your help!" said Alex. "You and your Beautifly were great!"

"I should be thanking you," said Sakura. "You and your Marril were just the best!"

"WE DID IT! WE CAUGHT OUR DORM POKEMON!" Alex and Sakura shouted as they high-fived each other.

*******************

Meanwhile, back at the boat docks behind the Leaf Green dorm, Joe, Robert, Tony, and Macey were waiting at one of the piers.

"Hmm, they sure have been gone a while," muttered Joe, looking at his watch. "I hope they didn't run into any trouble."

"Not to worry," said Robert. "They're both experienced travelers. I'm sure they'll be fine."

"Hey, look! There they are!" shouted Tony.

http://www.hotlinkfiles.com/files/854931_csb44/39._dearite_wakarete.mp3

As the four looked out past the pier, a motorboat carrying Alex and Sakura was seen speeding toward the pier. As is slowed down and stopped at the side of the pier, Alex and Sakura jumped out and ran toward the waiting group, happily waving their Pokéballs in the air.

"We did it, everyone!" Alex joyfully shouted. "We caught our dorm Pokémon!"

"Congratulations, you two!" smiled Joe.

"Yes, excellent work!" smiled Robert.

"So, what kind of Pokémon didya catch?" asked Tony.

"Yeah, show us!" said Macey.

"Sure thing!" smiled Sakura. "Check this out!"

Alex and Sakura tossed their Pokéballs up into the air, releasing their newly-caught Torchic and Chikorita. The two Pokémon smiled and greeted the crowd with their cries. Upon seeing Torchic, Macey's eyes lit up.

"Hey, wow! A Torchic and a Chikorita!" said Tony. "Talk about a lucky break! It ain't too often dat ya find starter Pokémon in da wild!"

"I must say, this Chikorita look quite healthy," said Robert as he petted Chikorita.

"Yeah, and this Torchic's lookin' good, too," said Joe as he petted Torchic. "If you raise them well, they'll both grow to be excellent battlers!"

"We will! Thank you!" said Alex and Sakura together.

"Oh, and that Torchic is just so cuuuuuute!" sighed Macey. "You are soooo lucky, Alex! I'm almost jealous!"

Alex and Sakura laughed, and then smiled as they turned to each other.

"Thanks for everything today, Alex," said Sakura. "You and your Marril were great. I'm not sure if I could have pulled this off without your help."

"I should be thanking you," said Alex. "It was thanks to your strategy that were able to pull it off, and your Beautifly was really something. You're the best battle partner anyone could ever ask for." Upon hearing this, Sakura smiled and blushed a deep red.

"So, come on, you guys!" said Tony. "Tell us all about your trip!"

"Yeah, what happened out there?" asked Macey. "We're dying to know!"

Just then, the sound of rumbling tummies could be heard coming from Torchic and Chikorita. Alex and Sakura laughed, and picked up their Pokémon.

"We'll tell you all about it tomorrow," said Sakura.

"Right now, we've got two very hungry Pokémon that deserve a good meal," said Alex.

The two smiled at each other once more, and walked off toward the Leaf Green Pokémon Center.

And so, on his first journey through the Rosary Islands, our hero Alex gains a new Pokémon in Torchic, and a new friend in Sakura. What further adventures does Pokémon Academy have in store for Alex? Only time will tell.

I will edit later with what I think.

Chapter 4 has arrived. The long-awaited Chapter 5 will soon follow.

***********

It’s another beautiful day at Pokémon Academy, and here at the Aqua Blue dorm, we join our hero Alex as he tests his skills against a second-year Aqua Blue student.

As the sun shone over the battlefield behind the Aqua Blue dorm, two students prepared to face off in a Pokémon battle. On one side was Alex, with Macey, and Sakura sitting on a bench behind him. On the other side was a slightly chubby boy wearing a straw hat and an Aqua Blue uniform with the sleeves cut off. Tony stood just outside the perimeter of the field, acting as judge.

“Primeape, I choose you!” shouted the Aqua Blue boy as he threw his Pokéball. A Primeape emerged, and with a cry of “Priiiiimeape!” assumed its fighting stance.

“Torchic, I choose you!” shouted Alex as he threw his Pokéball. Torchic emerged with a chirp of “Tooorchic-chic!” and assumed a battle stance.

“Ready, and begin!” shouted Tony.

http://www.hotlinkfiles.com/files/1701373_t3a8j/06_-_First_Battle.mp3

“Torchic, let’s start things off with a Scratch attack!” said Alex. Torchic leaped straight toward Primeape.

“Nice try, but no biscuits for you!” smiled the Aqua Blue boy. “Primeape, counter that with a Karate Chop!” Primeape nailed Torchic in the gut with a Karate Chop as it came down, sending Torchic flying all the way back to the other side of the field. Torchic struggled back to its feet, and shook its head.

“Nice move, but we’re not licked yet!” smiled Alex. “Torchic, time for Plan B! Charge straight on toward Primeape!” Torchic complied, and with a yell of “Toooooorchic!” ran straight toward Primeape at full speed.

“Sorry to say, but that there was a big mistake,” said the Aqua Blue boy. “Primeape, give Torchic a taste of DynamicPunch!” Primeape’s fist glowed as it reared back to punch Torchic.

“Now, Torchic! SLIIIIIIIDE!” yelled Alex. As Primeape let loose with DynamicPunch, Torchic threw itself on the ground and slid right between Primeape’s legs, causing it to miss completely and putting Torchic right behind Primeape.

“Okay Torchic, counter with a Peck attack!” Just as Primeape turned around to try and fend off Torchic, Torchic leaped forward and rapidly pecked Primeape multiple times with its beak. Torchic finished up the attack with one last Peck that knocked Primeape to the ground. Primeape struggled to get back up before Torchic could attack again.

“Now, Torchic! Finish this up with Ember!” With a cry of “Tooooooor!” Torchic let loose with a barrage of fire bullets from its beak that nailed Primeape dead on. Seconds later, Primeape fell to the ground, unconscious.

"Aw, dangit!" exclaimed the Aqua Blue boy. "Looks like ya got me."

“Primeape is unable to battle! Torchic wins!” said Tony. “Da winner of dis battle is Alex from the Fire Red dorm!”

"Aw, yeah! Another smokin' victory, Torchic!" cheered Alex as Macey and Sakura applauded behind him. Torchic leapt toward Alex, who caught it in a big hug. "You're the best dorm Pokémon anyone could ask for!" Alex laughed as Torchic chirped happily.

After the battle, Alex and the Aqua Blue boy stood in the middle of the field, shaking hands as they smiled at each other.

"Hoo wee!" said the boy. "Boy I tell you what, that there battle was hotter than my mama's homemade Tamato chili on a July morning! And that Torchic of yers is one powerful little critter!"

"Your Primeape wasn't bad, either," said Alex. "Thanks for a great match."

The boy suddenly snapped his fingers. "Dadgumit, I almost forgot to introduce myself! The name's Jim Bob, and I'm from Azalea Town. Pleased to meetcha!"

"I'm Alex, from Goldenrod City. The pleasure's all mine."

"Man, you two are BEYOND pathetic," said a sneering voive from behind the two. Alex and Jim Bob turned around, and saw Kamon standing right behind them.

"Kamon!" exclaimed Alex. "What are YOU doing here?! And where do you get off calling us pathetic?!

"None of your business, and I'm calling you that because that's exactly what you are."

"Hey, who's the jerk with the red hair?!" asked Macey.

"Remember that bully trainer with the Nidoking I told you about before?" Sakura whispered to Macey. Macey nodded, and Sakura pointed to Kamon.

"I mean, just look at you," Kamon continued. "Your puny little Torchic wins one easy match against a pathetic Primeape, and you're acting like you just won the Orange League Championship. And you, Mr. Hillbilly. Your Primeape just got humiliated by that runt of a Pokemon, and you're happy about it. You're either in serious denial, or you just don't care that you suck."

"Hey! I don't give a Rattata's patoot what you think of me, but I won't stand for anyone insulting my Torchic!" shouted Alex.

"Well, I'm insulting it anyway," sneered Kamon. "What're you gonna do, cry about it?"

"Listen, you arrogant...." Before Alex could finish his sentence, Jim Bob got right in Kamon's face.

"Now lookee here, bud. I don't know where you get off waltzing in here and insultin' people, but y'all seem like yer all talk," said Jim Bob. "If ya think yer so much better than Alex, then battle him and prove it."

"I'm not going to waste my time battling someone I know I'm better than," said Kamon. I've got better things to do."

"Sounds to me like yer backin' out cuz yer scared you'll lose," said Jim Bob with a grin.

"And it smells to me like you've been eating beans," said Kamon as he waved a hand in front of his face. Jim Bob stood there shaking his fist as his face turned red. "But bad breath aside, I do have a proposition for you, Alex."

"And what kind of proposition would that be?" asked Alex.

"The Fire Red dorm's holding a special Gym Challenge this month," said Kamon. "Here's how it works. Students are sent to a random Pokémon Gym in either the Kanto, Johto, or Hoenn reigons, and are given three days to win a badge from the Gym Leader. The winners will receive extra credit toward the class of their choice."

"Wait....a Gym Battle?"

"That's right. From what I hear, you've never been in a Gym Battle. But any Pokemon trainer worth half his salt should be able to earn at least one Gym Badge. If you take the challenge and win a badge, then I'll battle you."

Alex hesitated for a second, and then replied, "You've got a deal! Just show me where to sign up, and I'll win that Gym Badge! And I'll do it WITHOUT treating my Pokemon like dirt!"

"Brave words," said Kamon. "Let's see if you have the skills to back them up. Oh, by the way, I'll be competing in the Gym Challenge, too, just to make things fair. Of course, it wouldn't look very good for you if I manage to win a badge and you don't." Kamon stuck his hands in his pockets and walked off. "See you around, wimp."

Jim Bob looked at Alex, and noticed that he was standing there fuming. "Umm, you okay there, bud?"

"I won't lose," said Alex, shaking with anger. "There's no way I'm gonna lose to a jerk like him!"

***********

That night after dinner, all the Fire Red students who had signed up for the Gym Challenge had gathered in the lobby of the dorm, where Nurse Joy were standing behind the front desk, and Joe was standing off to the side.

"Okay everyone, here it is!" said Joe. "The moment you've been waiting for! The computer's just completed its selection, and in a moment, I'll announce the Gyms you'll be battling against for this challenge. Nurse Joy, if you would do the honors?"

"Sure thing," smiled Nurse Joy. She typed a few keys on her computer, and the monitor above the desk lit up, displaying the Pokémon Academy logo. The students looked up toward the screen in anticipation.

"Now, as per the standard rules, you'll all be paired off into two-man teams for each Gym, and face the Gym Leader in a double battle," said Joe. "After I announce each pairing, I'll tell you which Gym you'll be challenging. Is everyone ready?"

"Yeah!" replied the students.

"All right then, let's begin." Joe motioned to Nurse Joy, who typed a few more keys.

"Our first pair is Tony and Jeremy." The two student's portraits showed up on the screen. "And they'll be challenging Chuck at the Cianwood Gym for the Storm Badge!" A portrait of Cianwood City appeared above the portraits, along with a picture of the Storm Badge.

Tony smiled and shook hands with a boy with curly brown hair.

"Our next pairing is Kamon and Harold, and they'll be challenging Winona at the Fortree Gym for the Feather Badge!"

A boy with short blue hair tried to shake hands with Kamon, but Kamon just sneered at him and turned away.

"Next, we have Alex and Macey!" Alex and Macey both looked up at the screen. Alex had a look of nervousness on his face, while Macey had a look of excitement.

"Their challenge will be against Misty at the Cerulean Gym for the Cascadebadge!"

Macey giggled as she grabbed Alex's arm. "This is awesome! Looks like we're gonna be partners!" Suddenly, she noticed that Alex had a nervous look on his face. "Hey, is something wrong?"

"Oh, it's nothing, it's nothing!" stammered Alex. "I'm all right, really! Anyway, let's see what the rest of the pairing will be."

The next morning, Alex and Macey were on a small ferry bound for Cerulean City. At a small outdoor cafe on board the ship, Alex and Macey were having breakfast. Macey was enjoying an omelet sandwich while Alex was just staring down at his roast beef sandwich with a worried expression on his face. Alex's Eevee was snuggled in his lap, sleeping soundly. Macey suddenly stopped eating and looked up, clearly concerned.

"Hey, what's the matter?" asked Macey. "You haven't said two words since we boarded the ferry, and you haven't even touched your breakfast."

"Don't worry about it," said Alex. "It's nothing, really."

"'Nothing' wouldn't make you stare at a yummy roast beef sandwich when you haven't even had breakfast," said Macey with a grin. "Now stop being such a mope and tell me what's wrong. I promise not to make fun of you."

"Okay, you twisted my arm," sighed Alex with a smile. He took a sip from his fruit punch and took a deep breath.

"It's mostly this Gym Battle. Kamon was right when he said that I've never been in a Gym Battle. I'd never really thought much about it until now. It's true that it's always been my dream to be an elite trainer like Drake of the Orange Crew, and that was basically what I had in mind when I first started my journey. But after a while, I didn't think about it much. Battling was always my favorite part of my journey, and I had a lot of fun with it. But I never battled to win any sort of prize or anything like that. I only battled to have fun and make new friends. The Whirl Cup was the only major tournament I've ever been in, and even that was just for fun."

As Macey smiled and nodded in understanding, Alex took a second to gather his thoughts before he went on.

"But now here I am, about to face a Gym Leader. This is the first time there's been in a battle where I feel like I just HAVE to win. And not for the extra credit. It's 'cause I don't wanna lose to Kamon. To be honest, I was really shocked when he proposed that challenge. But if I had refused, I would have looked like a coward."

"Hey, come on!" said Macey. "Why should it matter what that jerk thinks of you?"

"It's not about what he said, Macey. It's about Kamon himself. That night during the welcome party, Phanpy was giving its all, and still barely managed to tie with his Nidoking. And I know you've seen him battling around campus. He may be a jerk, but he wins battles."

"Yeah, you're right," said Macey. "Now that you mention it, I don't think he's lost a single battle since the term started."

"And that's why I HAVE to win this battle!" Alex exclaimed. "Kamon may be a skilled trainer, but the way he treats his Pokémon is just wrong! I refuse to believe that being cruel to your Pokémon and treating them like slaves is the only way to win! And by winning that Gym Badge and beating Kamon, I'm gonna prove that trusting in your Pokémon, and caring about them like true friends, is the only real way to win!"

"I think I understand now," said Macey. "And you also wanna prove to Kamon that you're not the weakling he says you are, right?"

"Exactly," said Alex. "But now, I'm not so sure if I'm ready for this. I've never been in a Gym Battle before, and Gym Leaders are supposed to be some of the best trainers out there. I've never been this scared in my life." Alex looked down at his feel with a nervous look on his face. "I don't know if I can do this."

Macey smiled as she placed a hand on Alex's shoulder. "Don't worry about a thing, Alex! I know you're gonna do great! Gym Leaders may be tough, but they're not invincible!"

"Easy for you to say," said Alex. "You've qualified for the Johto League once before."

"True, but haven't you already beaten me once before?" asked Macey. "Don't forget, I had to beat every Gym Leader in the Johto reigon to qualify for the Silver Conference! If you can beat me, you can definitely beat a Gym Leader!"

"Wow, I never thought of it that way," mused Alex. "All right, then! I'll give it my best!"

"That's the spirit!" said Macey happily. "I know you're gonna do great!"

Just then, an announcement was heard over the PA. "Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to Cerulean City. Please prepare for arrival."

"That's our cue, Al," said Macey. "Come on, let's get our stuff."

http://www.hotlinkfiles.com/files/854913_jncyl/10_-_touka_shitei.mp3

As the ferry pulled into the port, Alex and Macey disembarked, and stepped out onto the dock.

"Well, this is it," said Macey. "We've arrived in Cerulean City."

"Let's head for the Pokémon Center and rest up," said Alex. "After that, we can head for the Gym. That reminds me, would you happen to know anything about the Gym Leader here?"

"If I remember correctly, her name's Misty. I actually met her once, and to be honest, she's a major female Mightyena, if you know what I mean."

"That bad, huh?" asked Alex.

"Not really," said Macey. "What I mean is that she's a scrawny blabbermouth who thinks she's queen of the world. But don't worry! As far as I could tell, she's all bark and no bite. And besides, she specializes in water Pokémon! Boooo-ring! Trust me, winning this badge'll be a walk in the....."

Before Macey could finish her sentence, she was interrupted by the sound of a massive explosion coming from a nearby dock.

"What the heck was that?!" cried Macey in surprise.

"It came from over there!" exclaimed Alex, pointing to a nearby warehouse that now had a huge hole in the roof with smoke pouring out of it. Standing next to the hole, two men in bright red outfits threw four Pokéballs into the hole. Seconds later, dock workers began fleeing in terror through the front entrance, chased by jets of flame.

"Something tells me those guys aren't here for Super Happy Fun Time," said Alex. "We'd better check this out."

"Right behind you, Al!" said Macey. "This'll make a great warm-up for our Gym Battle!" The pair ran off toward the warehouse.

Alex and Macey slipped inside the warehouse through a side entrance and quickly hid behind a nearby crate. As they watched, they got a good look at the two men who had set off the bomb before. One was a tall, muscle-bound man with a big jaw. The other was a shorter, scrawny man with greasy hair and a long nose. They both had tattoos of flames on their arms, and their sleeveless red shirts had an insignia that looked like a sun with a giant S on it. The muscular man was using a crowbar to open a nearby crate while the scrawny man kept an eye on the front door, accompanied by two Houndoom and two Mightyena. Finally, the muscular man got the crate open, and looked inside.

"Okay, let's see......Helix Fossil, Dome Fossil, Root Fossil, Claw Fossil....this is the one, Nails! The fossils are all here!"

"Good work, Hammer!" said Nail. "Now, let's get it to the roof, and I'll radio the chopper to pick us up!"

"Looks like they're stealing that fossil shipment up there," whispered Macey. "We'd better hurry before they escape!"

"Right! Let's go, Macey!" said Alex. But just as they were about to charge toward Hammer and Nails, a shout of "Hold it right there!" was heard from the front entrance.

Alex and Macey turned to the front entrance, and saw a pretty young red-haired girl holding an Azurill standing in the doorway. She wore a yellow vest with a blue collar and button, with a red undershirt. The matching yellow shorts she wore were really short, and showed off her legs quite nicely. As the girl stood there, she stared at the two thieves with a look of defiance on her face.

"So you're the ones who caused that explosion!" said the girl. "Who are you punks and what do you think you're doing?"

"Who we are is none of your business," said Hammer. "And what we're doing is whatever we want."

"Yeah, and what we want is to take this shipment of fossils with us back to our boss," said Nails. "So scram, Red. We don't have time to play around with you."

The girl took a quick look at the crate that Hammer had forced open, and a look of surprise crossed her face when she saw the label. "Hey, wait a minute! Those are the fossil samples from Oreburgh City that are going on display at the Cerulean Natural History Museum! They need those fossils for their grand opening! You can't just walk in and steal them!"

"We don't give a Piloswine's patoot what they're for, girlie pie," said Hammer as he jumped down to join Nails. "We got sent here to steal 'em, and we're gonna steal 'em."

"Not while I'm around, you greasy dirtbags!" shouted the girl.

"You better watch you mouth, Little Miss Shorty Shorts," sneered Nails. "We're Hammer and Nails, two of the toughest enforcers in our organization. And we don't appreciate you butting in when we're trying to do our job."

"And you'd better not underestimate me!" said the girl. "I'm Misty, Gym Leader of Cerulean City, and keeper of the Cascade Badge! And I don't appreciate crooks like you causing trouble in my city!"

"Wait a minute!" Alex whispered to Macey. "THAT'S Misty?! I thought you said she was a female Mightyena!"

"She is!" Macey whispered back.

"Oh, come on, Macey! Just look at those pretty green eyes, that flawless skin, those long, lean legs, and that cute ponytail! Can you honestly tell me she's not cute? Sure, she's got a bit of a tomboy thing going, but that's cool."

"I meant in personality, not looks. Trust me Alex. You'll think differently when you actually talk to her. She's about as charming as a seasick Totodile!"

Meanwhile, the two crooks just smirked at Misty.

"Did you hear that, Hammer?" said Nails in a voice of mock fear. "She's a Gym Leader! Scaaa-ry!"

"Yeah, we're in big trouble now!" said Hammer in the same tone. "Look, I'm shaking in my steel-toed booties!" The two then bust out laughing.

"Hey, what's so funny?!" demanded Misty.

"You don't scare us, Legs," said Nails. "We don't care if you're part of the Elite Four. No one messes with our organization and goes to bed happy."

"Well then, I'll be happy to be the first," smiled Misty as she took out a Pokéball and expanded it.

"Your funeral, cutie pie," said Hammer. "Nails, let's get rid of this pest. Houndoom, attack!" The two Houndoom charged at Misty.

"Right behind you, Hammer," said Nails. "Mightyena, attack!" The two Mightyena charged as well.

http://www.hotlinkfiles.com/files/854910_lmtod/3._shakunetsu_no_battlefield.mp3

"I'm ready when you are! Corsola, go!" shouted Misty as she hurled her Pokeball. In a flash of light, a Corsola emerged, and landed in front of Misty with a shout of "Corsola!" It stood there, ready to battle.

"Azurill, you help too!" shouted Misty. With a cry of "Azurill!", Azurill leapt from her arms and landed next to Corsola, also ready to battle.

"Houndoom, give her a taste of your Flamethrower!" shouted Hammer. Both Houndoom let loose with a jet of flames from their mouths.

"Mightyena, let her have it with Shadow Ball!" shouted Nails. Both Mightyena shot Shadow Balls from their mouths.

"Time to show you boys how we party in Cerulean City!" said Misty with a smile. "Azurill, Corsola, let's give Water Gun a whirl!" Azurill and Corsola leapt into the air, easily dodging the attacks from Houndoom and Mightyena. They both did a mid-air somersault, then shot powerful water streams from their mouths straight down the the Houndoom and Mightyena, who all took the blast full-force. The four enemy Pokémon were sent flying, and landed right in front of Hammer and Nails. As the mist cleared, both Hammer and Nails were shocked to find that one of Hammer's Houndoom and one of Nails' Mightyena had already been knocked unconscious.

"Holy Caterpies!" exclaimed Alex. "And THIS is the girl you said was all bark and no bite?!"

"Okay, so she's gotten better since the last time I saw her!" said Macey.

"Umm, you HAVE seen her battle before, right?!"

"Well....I....that is....no," stammered Macey with an embarrassed look on her face. Just as Alex was about to retort, Hammer spoke.

"So you got in one lucky shot!" said Hammer as he called back his unconscious Houndoom. "But this battle ain't over yet!"

"You may be good, but nobody makes fools outta us and gets away with it!" said Nails as he called back his unconscious Mightyena.

"Well then, just call me Little Miss Nobody!" said Misty with an overly-sweet smile.

"Okay, that does it! You are toast!" shouted Hammer. "Houndoom, use Crunch!"

"Mightyena, you use Crunch, too!" said Nails. "Show those pipsqueak Pokemon a world of hurt!" The two Pokemon bared their teeth as they charged toward Azurill and Corsola.

"Charging in head-on?" smiled Misty. "You're gonna regret that. Azurill, use Protect! Corsola, use Harden!"

Houndoom chomped down hard on Azurill, and Mightyena did the same to Corsola. But a split second later, Houndoom noticed that it had bitten down on a powerful force field, and Mightyena noticed that it had bitten down on a solid stone skin, made even harder by Harden. Upon realizing this, the two Pokémon leaped up, yelping in pain. Hammer and Nails began to look worried.

"Hmph!" said Macey. "That Misty thinks she's so great!" She suddenly stood up. "Well, I'll show her a thing or two!"

"Macey, wait!" said Alex. What do you think you're doing?"

"What's it look like?" said Macey. "I'm gonna take out those crooks myself, and knock that Misty down a peg or two!"

Despite Alex's protests, Macey leapt out from behind the crates, and ran straight toward the battle. But before she could get her one of her Pokéballs out, Nails' Mightyena caught sight of her, dashed toward her at lightning speed, bit down on the sleeve of her uniform jacket, and flung her toward Hammer, who caught her in a chokehold as she came down.

"Well, now THIS is a pleasant surprise!" grinned Hammer. "Thanks for finding us a hostage, Nails!"

"Actually, you should thank Mightyena for being so quick," said Nails. "And while you're at it, thank the brat for being so dumb."

"Okay, Red!" said Hammer. "Call back your Pokémon and beat it, or Miss Pigtails here is in for a world of hurt!"

"Better do what he says, Legs," said Nails. "Hammer ain't the kind of person to make idle threats."

Misty stood there, fuming. But before anyone could make a move, a shout of "Eevee, use Sand-attack!" was heard from behind a crate. A cloud of dust kicked up, enveloping the two criminals and their Pokémon. Alex took the opportunity to rush in and grab Macey out of Hammer's clutches, then rush back out. As the dust cleared, Hammer looked down gave a cry of surprise when he noticed that his hostage was gone. Hammer, Nails, and Misty looked around, and noticed that Alex was standing on the other side of the warehouse, carrying Macey over his shoulder as Eevee stood next to him.

"It's okay, Misty!" shouted Alex. "I freed the hostage! You can finish these crooks off now!"

Misty smiled and nodded to Alex, then turned to Hammer and Nails. "You two are out of business! Azurill, use Bubblebeam! Corsola, Spike Cannon!"

The two Pokémon launched their attacks full force, which combined into a single beam of bubbles and spikes which nailed Houndoom and Mightyena head on. A split second later, both of the criminals' Pokémon were unconscious.

"Oh, man," said Hammer. "Tell me we did not just get beat by a little girl."

"We got no choice, Hammer," said Nails. "We'll have to leave the fossils and split!"

The two called their Pokémon back and ran off toward a side entrance. But as they opened the door, they found Officer Jenny standing there, smiling and holding a pair of handcuffs. In a panic, they fled back to the pile of crates to try and escape through the hole in the roof, but soon found themselves surrounded by a squad of police officers who had come in through the front entrance.

"End of the line, boys," said Jenny as she approached the two. "You're both under arrest for robbery."

***********

Misty smiled as she watched the now-handcuffed Hammer and Nails being escorted to the paddy wagon by two police officers.

"You ain't heard the last of us, Red!" yelled Hammer.

"Yeah! One way or another, we'll get back at you for this!" yelled Nails.

Just then, Officer Jenny approached and shook Misty's hand.

"Thanks for your help in taking care of those crooks," said Jenny. "I'm just sorry we couldn't get here sooner."

"That's all right," said Misty. "I am a Gym Leader, after all. I have a responsibility to this city and its people."

"And we couldn't have asked for a better one," smiled Jenny. "Anyway, my squad is about to start investigating the scene, so I'll have to ask you to leave."

"I understand," said Misty. "That reminds me, what happened to those other two kids who were here?"

"Don't worry, they're just fine," said Jenny. "They told me they were here to see you, so I asked them to wait outside."

"Oh, I see. Thank you very much!" Misty quickly bowed to Jenny and ran outside. Just outside the front entrance, she saw Alex there, still carrying Macey over his shoulder.

"Oh, there you are!" said Misty. "I'm glad to see you're both all right. And thanks for freeing that hostage."

"Oh, it was nothing, really," blushed Alex. "I'm just glad that...."

"Hey Alex, the crooks are gone. You can put me down now," said Macey.

"Oh, sorry!" said Alex. "I totally forgot!" As Alex put Macey down, she dusted off her skirt and straightened her jacket.

"Hey, those are Pokémon Academy uniforms!" said Misty. "You must be the two students who are coming to the Gym today for Gym Challenge! One of the professors told me you'd be coming today."

"Yeah, that's right," said Alex. "I'm Alex, and this is Macey. We're both first-year students in the Fire Red dorm."

"Well, it's nice to meet you, Alex," smiled Misty as she shook Alex's hand. She then turned and stared at Macey. "And you look awfully familiar....."

Macey smiled nervously, while Alex looked puzzled.

"Wait a second!" exclaimed Misty. "I remember you now! You were at the Johto League Silver Conference! You're that fire-Pokémon nut that was crushing on Ash!"

"Wait a minute.....just how well do you two know each other?"

"You mean she didn't tell you?" asked Misty. "No surprise there. Well, I was coaching a friend of mine at the Johto League Silver Conference the same year she was competing, and she went and got this huge crush on him after he saved her Vulpix from Team Rocket."

Alex turned to Macey. "Macey, why do I get the feeling you didn't tell me the whole story?"

Macey smiled nervously. "Well, Alex, see, the thing is....."

Misty got a suspicious look on her face. "And exactly what did she tell you about me?"

"Well, she said you were a scrawny blabbermouth who was all bark and no bite," said Alex. "Though from seeing the way you handles those crooks, you pretty much destroyed that myth." Macey turned beet red with humiliation.

Misty got an angry look on her face. "Oh, she did, did she? Well apparently, it seems that SOMEONE is just taking out her frustrations on me because I got in the way when she was drooling over my friend!"

"Okay, so maybe I did say a couple things I shouldn't have," said Macey. "And I admit, you were pretty good against those thieves. But anybody could have beaten those two losers! Let's see how you do against a Johto League qualifier!"

"I'm looking forward to it!" said Misty. "And I'll show you just how great water Pokémon really are!"

"Yeah, right!" said Macey. "My fire Pokémon can take on all your lame water-types, even with a disadvantage!" She slid over to Alex and put her arm around him as she smiled. "And Alex here is gonna use a fire-type too, just to show you the true awesomeness of fire Pokémon!"

"Hey, hey, hold on a minute!" said Alex. "I'm not sure if it's a good idea to start battling right now! We just got here, and we did just survive an attempted robbery. Don't you think we should head for the Pokémon Center and rest up first?"

"Yeah, you got a point," said Macey. "Okay, then! We'll stop at the Pokémon Center for a rest, and we'll battle you this afternoon!"

"Sounds good!" said Misty. "I'll meet you back at the Gym at four o' clock. Nurse Joy can tell you how to get there."

"We'll be there with bells on!" said Macey with a determined grin. Alex, on the other hand, looked quite nervous.

***********

An hour later, Alex and Macey were at the Pokémon Center. For some reason, all the excitement had made them hungry, so they ate a fairly large lunch, which left them both quite sleepy. The two were now resting in one of the trainers' bedrooms in the back. Alex was sprawled out on the bottom bunk on the left, his uniform jacket and shoes draped lazily over his backpack next to the bed. Macey was in the bottom bunk on the other side, with her jacket and shoes sitting on top of her duffel bag. She'd also taken off her pantyhose and tossed them sloppily over the desk in the back of the room.

Alex turned to Macey. "Macey, are you sure about this?"

"Sure about what?" asked Macey.

"Challenging Misty with fire Pokémon," said Alex. "I mean, isn't it usually a good idea to use a type that a Gym Leader's Pokémon are weak against? I don't think it's a good idea to go barreling in there with a type disadvantage just to prove a point."

"Alex, you're worrying over nothing," smiled Macey. "Need I remind you again that I was in the Johto League? I know how to handle Gym Leaders. Type disadvantages can be tricky, but you can always make up for it with good strategy."

"Are you sure our Pokémon are up to the job?" asked Alex.

"Of course they are!" said Macey. "All my fire Pokémon have plenty of experience dealing with water-types. And your Torchic is as awesome as they come! Trust me, we'll win that badge faster than you can say Blast Burn."

"I'm still not too sure about this. I mean, you and I both saw just how powerful Misty's Pokemon are, and how skilled she is. Are you sure we're not...."

At that point, Macey got up, walked over to Alex, knelt down, and placed her finger on the tip of his nose.

"Alex, what dorm are we in again?" she smiled.

"Fire Red."

"That's right, FIRE Red. We represent burning passion and fiery ambition! Just like our dorm Pokémon! Remember what Joe said during the opening ceremonies? He said to always stay true to that fire, and to ourselves!" She placed a hand on his shoulder. "You're an awesome trainer, Alex. And you're the best tag partner anyone could ask for. All we have to do is trust each other and do our best, and I know we'll win!"

Alex stared at her for a moment, and then smiled. "Yeah, I guess you're right. Okay, I'm with you."

"That's my boy," smiled Macey as she playfully ruffled his hair. She then got up and plopped back down into her bed. "Now let's get some sleep. We gotta be fresh for our Gym Battle!"

"Sure thing," said Alex.

***********

At four o' clock exactly, Alex and Macey arrived at the front lobby of the Cerulean City Gym. Misty was waiting there with Azurill in her arms.

"Ah, good! You're both right on time!" said Misty. "Welcome to the Cerulean City Gym!"

"Thanks, Misty!" said Macey. "We're ready to go any time!"

"Actually, our judge hasn't.....," Just then, a Pokégear ring was heard. "Oh, excuse me a minute." Misty took a Pokégear out of her back pocket and pressed the button. "Hello, this is Misty."

"Hey Misty, it's Daisy. I got your voice mail," said a female voice coming from the Pokégear. "What's so urgent that you had to call me in the middle of mall trolling?"

"Where in the name of Mt. Moon are you?!" exclaimed Misty. "You were supposed to be here at four to judge the Gym Battle I'm having with the Pokemon Academy students, remember?"

"Oh, that?" said Daisy. "Don't worry about it. I'll be back as soon as I'm done here. Besides, I'm sure they'll be a little late."

"Late?! The challengers are already here!" shouted Misty. "I need you back here now!"

"But Misty, there's a huge sale on accessories at O' Martin's!" said Daisy. "Can't you just...."

"No, I cannot stall for time!" yelled Misty. "I am not gonna postpone an important Gym Battle just because you've got a shopping itch! NOW GET YOUR SCRAWNY BUTT BACK TO THE GYM BEFORE I COME DOWN THERE AND DRAG YOU BACK HERE BY YOUR WELL-GROOMED HAIR!"

"Okay, okay, you don't have to yell," sighed Daisy. "I'm on my way right now. I'll be there in five minutes."

"Good. Meet me in the main arena as soon as you get back," said Misty.

"Right, see you then," said Daisy. "And I do not have a scrawny butt."

Misty clicked the button again and hung up. "Ditz," she muttered to herself. She then noticed that Alex and Macey were giving her strange looks.

"Heh, heh. Um, well....sorry you had to see that. Sometimes my temper gets the best of me," laughed Misty nervously. "Anyway, while we're waiting, I'll show you the arena we'll be battling in. Come on, it's this way." Misty left through a side entrance, with Alex and Macey following close behind.

***********

As Alex and Macey entered the main arena, they took a look around. Macey was noticeably impressed.

"I have to admit, this is a pretty cool arena," said Macey. "Check it out, there's aquariums built right into the stands."

"WAIT JUST A COTTON-PICKIN' MINUTE!" exclaimed Alex suddenly.

"What's the matter, Alex?" asked Macey.

"You mean we have to battle on THAT?!" said Alex, pointing to the huge pool in the center adorned with numerous floating platforms. "You didn't mention anything about us having to battle on a pool!"

"Well, all Gym Leaders have their own little quirks when it comes to battle," said Macey. "And seeing as how she's a water Pokémon expert, it only makes sense that this would be hers. Besides, there are platforms, so it's still a fair fight."

"Yeah, but we're using FIRE Pokémon, Macey!" said Alex. "If they fall in the water, we're screwed!"

"And if they don't, we'll be fine, right?" said Macey with a wink. "Come on, Alex. Don't let a little handicap like this scare you off. Fighting my way through these kind of surprises is what got me into the Johto League."

Just then, Misty walked over to them. "Okay, everything's set on my end. We can start the battle as soon as...."

"Hello, everyone!" called a valley girl-accented voice from the entry hall. "Your beautiful buxom blonde judge has arrived!"

Alex, Macey, and Misty turned around to see a lovely girl of about 18 enter the arena. She wore a white miniskirt with a pink sweater over a green blouse, and wore a pink flower in her long blonde hair. She walked over to them with a big smile on her face, and took Misty's hands in hers.

"Misty, I'm sooo sorry I'm late!" said Daisy. "I know I shouldn't shirk Gym duty, but when the shopping bug bites, I can't help myself. Can you forgive me? Pretty please?"

"Fine, but you owe me dessert at the Schirocco Tea House this weekend," said Misty.

Daisy then turned to Alex and Macey. "So you guys must be the students from Pokemon Academy! Those uniforms are just adorable!"

Alex and Macey laughed nervously, but said nothing.

"Umm, right," said Misty. "Anyway, let's all take our positions, and then we can get this battle started."

***********

Minutes later, everyone was in position. Misty stood at the blue corner under the diving board, while Alex and Macey stood at the red corner in front of the entrance. Daisy stood at the side of the pool with a pair of red and blue flags in hand.

"This official Pokémon Academy Gym Battle between Alex and Macey of the Fire Red dorm and the Gym Leader Misty will now begin!" called Daisy. "This match will be a double battle, with the Gym Leader using two Pokémon, and the challengers each using one Pokémon. During the battle, there will be no substitutions allowed by either side. The battle will be over when both of either the challenger's or the Gym Leader's Pokémon are unable to battle." She turned to Misty. "Is the Gym Leader ready?"

"Yes!" said Misty.

Daisy turned to Alex and Macey. "Are the challengers ready?"

"Yes!" said Alex and Macey simultaneously.

"Trainers, bring out your Pokémon!"

"For my Pokémon, I choose.....Torchic! Let's go!" said Alex as he threw his Pokéball. Torchic materialized on the platform on the left, and assumed its battle stance.

"And my Pokémon will be.....Vulpix! I choose you!" said Macey as she threw her Pokéball. Vulpix materialized and assumed its battle stance on the platform on the right.

Misty took a Pokéball out of her left pocket. "My first Pokémon will be....Corsola!" Misty threw her Pokéball, and Corsola emerged in the water in front of her with a chirp of "Corsola, Corsola, Corsola!"

"And for my second Pokémon, I'd like to introduce a new friend of mine all the way from the Sinnoh reigon!" said Misty. She took a Pokéball out of her right pocket, and kissed it. "Say hello to Lumineon!" She threw the Pokéball, and the blue-and-black fish Pokémon emerged in the water next to Corsola. It gave a soft cry of "Luuuu...." as it waved its tail fin back and forth.

"So, those are the Pokémon she's using, eh?" said Macey.

"Let's check 'em out," said Alex as they took out their Pokédexes and scanned the two Pokémon.

Lumineon, the Neon Pokémon. The patterns on its fins glow with an intense light, and can be seen on the surface of even the deepest ocean.

Corsola, the Coral Pokémon. Its coral body constantly sheds and grows, often creating coral reefs in the areas they inhabit.

"Let the battle begin!" shouted Daisy as she held up the two flags.

"First attack means sure victory!" said Macey. "Vulpix, Flamethrower!"

"Right behind you, Macey!" said Alex. "Torchic, Ember!"

The two fire Pokémon let loose with their respective fire attacks, sending a stream of flame and a barrage of fire bullets directly at Misty's Pokémon.

"Corsola, Lumineon, dive down and dodge it!" called Misty. The two Pokémon submerged themselves into the water, and began swimming all around the pool. Alex and Macey looked around the pool, but couldn't see them.

"Torchic, stand back-to-back with Vulpix!" said Alex. "That way, they can't sneak up on you!"

"Vulpix, stay close to Torchic!" said Macey. "And be careful! Those two could come up from anywhere!"

The two fire Pokémon obeyed their trainers and stood back-to-back.

"Corsola, Lumineon, attack with Water Gun!" said Misty. A split-second later, Corsola and Lumineon leapt out of the water as high as they could, and fired their Water Gun attacks straight down at Vulpix and Torchic.

"Torchic (Vulpix), use Quick Attack to dodge!" shouted Alex and Macey together. Both Pokémon zipped across the pool to the middle platform, barely managing to dodge the attack. Corsola and Lumineon landed in the water, looking disoriented.

"Now's our chance to counterattack!" said Macey. "Vulpix, use Flamethrower on Lumineon!" Vulpix let loose with a Flamethrower that hit Lumineon dead on, and sent it sailing to the other end of the pool.

"You heard the lady!" said Alex. "Torchic, give Corsola a dose of Ember!" Torchic shot an Ember attack that hit Corsola right in the face, and created an explosion that sent Corsola flying onto a nearby platform.

"Think you're tough, eh? Well, let's see how you like this!" said Misty. "Corsola, use Tackle! Lumineon, use Bounce!" Corsola charged straight at Torchic, while Lumineon leapt out of the water and dove straight down toward Vulpix.

"Here's how we like it! Vulpix, Energy Ball!" Vulpix shot a green glowing glob at Lumineon, hitting it dead on and knocking it back into the water.

"Torchic, use Peck!" Torchic leapt straight at Corsola and rammed it with its beak, then used the momentum to somersault back on the platform. Corsola skidded back a few feet. By now, both Corsola and Lumineon were looking worn out.

"So, how'd you like Vulpix's Energy Ball?" asked Macey. "All my fire Pokémon have ways to deal with water attacks!"

"Very impressive, Macey," smiled Misty. "It really makes me happy to see that you've raised your Pokémon well. It shows just how much you really love them."

"You got that right!" said Macey. "My fire Pokémon have always held a special pace in my heart! In fact, I joined the Academy so I could learn more about them, and become a great fire Pokémon trainer so that the whole world can see how awesome they are!"

Misty turned to Alex. "You and your Torchic are doing a great job too, Alex! You two make a great combination!'

"Thanks, Misty," said Alex, blushing. "I haven't had Torchic for very long, but it's already an irreplaceable part of my team."

Macey turned to Alex. "So, how are you enjoying your first Gym Battle?"

"I'm having a blast!" said Alex. "You were right! With our awesome Pokémon, and pure determination, that badge is as good as ours!"

"I told you this battle would be no problem!" said Macey. "Now, whaddya say we wrap this up?"

"I hear you, Macey!" said Alex. "Let's do this!"

Macey turned to Misty again. "So, now do you see how awesome fire Pokémon really are?"

Misty closed her eyes, and smiled. "Yeah, I do see how great they are, especially in the hands of a skilled trainer. And I can see why you love them so much." Misty placed a hand on her chest. "Because I love water Pokémon for the exact same reasons. Ever since I was a little girl, water Pokémon have always been precious to me. I've always loved the ocean, and being around water Pokémon just feels like having a part of the ocean with me."

Alex and Macey just stared at her with a look of surprise on their faces.

"Whoa," said Daisy with the same look. "I had no idea Misty was so deep."

Misty opened her eyes, and a look of determination crossed her face. "And it's because I love water Pokémon so much that I'm not gonna lose this battle! It wouldn't be fair to them if I give anything less than 100%! So get ready, because it's time for me to get serious! Corsola, use Recover! And Lumineon, use Payback!"

Corsola began glowing with a white light. When the energy faded, Corsola was fully healed. A split second later, Lumineon opened its mouth and let loose with a barrage of tiny black energy balls. The balls exploded as they hit Torchic and Vulpix dead on. When the smoke cleared, both Pokémon were still standing, but left in bad shape.

"No way!" said Macey in shock. "How'd Lumineon cause that much damage with just one shot?!"

"That's the awesome thing about Payback," said Misty. "The damage doubles if the Pokemon's taken damage prior to using it. Now brace yourselves, 'cause the storm's gonna hit, and hit hard! Corsola, charge in! Lumineon, use Aqua Ring and head in right behind Corsola!"

Corsola sped straight toward Torchic and Vulpix at full speed. Lumineon followed right behind, surrounded by blue energy rings that were slowly healing its earlier injuries.

"This is bad, Macey!" said Alex. "We were winning just a minute ago, but Misty's managed to totally turn the tables on us with one attack! What are we gonna do?"

"Don't give up, Alex!" said Macey. "Misty may have caught us off-guard, but we're not licked yet!"

"You're right, Macey!" said Alex. "We can't give up now after coming this close! What do you say we put everything we've got into one final combo attack?"

"You read my mind!" said Macey. "Vulpix, use Flamethrower at full power!"

"Torchic, use Ember with everything you've got!" said Alex.

Both Pokémon let loose with their fire attacks that combined into a huge blast of fire that threatened to engulf the two water Pokémon. However, Misty didn't look the least bit worried.

"Lumineon, use Flash!" called Misty. "And Corsola, use Mirror Coat!"

A bright light emanated from Lumineon's scales, blinding Vulpix and Torchic. At the same time, a green energy barrier surrounded Corsola. As the intense fire struck it, it suddenly stopped, then reversed direction, heading straight back toward Torchic and Vulpix. The two blinded fire Pokémon were unable to dodge, and were struck dead-on. Vulpix and Torchic tried their best to withstand the attack, but by the time the flames died down, they were barely able to stand up.

"Now it's time to finish this!" said Misty. "Corsola, Lumineon, surround them on both sides and use Surf!"

Corsola and Lumineon surrounded the platform Torchic and Vulpix were standing on, and called up huge waves on both sides that crashed down on them. As the waves subsided, Corsola and Lumineon were floating next to the platform, but Torchic and Vulpix were nowhere to be found.

However, two seconds later, Torchic and Vulpix floated to the surface, completely unconscious.

"Torchic and Vulpix are unable to battle! Corsola and Lumineon are the winners!" shouted Daisy as she held up the blue flag. "This battle goes to the Gym Leader Misty!"

Alex and Macey stared at the pool for what seemed like an eternity. Then finally, without a word, they called their Pokémon back into their Pokéballs.

A minute later, Misty came over to the red corner. "Thanks for a great match, you two. You were both...." Misty stopped short as she saw Alex and Macey clutching their Pokéballs, both looking thoroughly depressed. Macey suddenly turned to Misty with a forced smile on her face.

"Well, it looks like you won. I guess water Pokémon aren't so boring after all" said Macey. "Congratulations. You really are a great Gym Leader."

"Thanks, but you and Alex didn't make it easy. You and your fire Pokémon really fought well, and you almost beat me."

"Yeah, until this lamer had to get all nervous and mess everything up," said Alex as he stood trembling. "I'm sorry, Macey. This is all my fault. If I hadn't choked when Misty turned the tables on us, we might have still won."

"Alex, don't say that!" said Macey. "You know that's not true!"

"Yes, it is!" shouted Alex. "You've got way more talent with fire Pokémon than me. You could have won this match easy without me holding you back. Let's face it! I was never cut out for these kinds of battles, and I never will be!" And with that, Alex ran out of the Gym.

"Alex, wait!" called Macey as she ran after him.

As the two ran off, Misty and Daisy stared at the space where the two had just been.

"Misty, do you think those two are gonna be okay?" asked Daisy.

"I'm not sure, Daisy," said Misty. "But I really hope so."

Despite having fought their hardest, Alex and Macey's Gym Battle ends in a crushing defeat, leaving them both with broken hearts and shattered confidence. Will our heroes be able to regain their confidence in time for a rematch? Stay tuned and find out.

In a small park somewhere in the center of Cerulean City, a heavy rainstorm had just started. Alex was sitting on a small park bench, not moving an inch. He barely even noticed that the rain was soaking him thoroughly. All he could think about what the heartbreak he was feeling over his devastating loss at the Cerulean Gym. Macey had had such high hopes for them when they went in, and he hated himself for not being able to live up to those hopes. Right now, he wanted to crawl into the deepest hole he could find, and never come out.

Suddenly, Alex felt something hovering over him as the rain stopped falling on him. He looked up and saw Misty standing there, holding an umbrella in one hand and Azurill in the other.

"Are you all right?" asked Misty with a look of concern on her face. "Thank goodness I found you."

Alex slowly lifted his head to look at Misty. Misty couldn't help but notice that his eyes were red, making her wonder if he'd been crying.

"Oh, it's you, Misty," Alex said hoarsely. "How'd you find me?"

"It was thanks to Azurill," smiled Misty. "Its sensitive ears let it track people and Pokémon just about anywhere, especially in rain." She extended a hand to Alex as Azurill climbed into her backpack. "Anyway, let's get you back to the Pokémon Center before you catch your death of cold out here. Macey and Nurse Joy are both worried sick about you."

As Alex took Misty's hand, she placed his arm over her shoulders and guided him down the road back to the Pokémon Center.

****************

Half an hour later, Alex was sitting in one of the bedrooms of the Pokemon Center, wrapped in a blanket. Macey came in, and handed him a cup of tea. He stared at it for about a minute, and then drank some.

"How do you feel?" Macey asked.

"Terrible," said Alex. "It's my fault we lost. You had our victory all planned out, and I went and ruined everything."

"No, Alex! You didn't ruin anything!" exclaimed Macey. "Losing that battle was my fault, not yours! I was the one copping an attitude, thinking we were so superior!

"Oh, there you are, guys," said a voice from the doorway. Alex and Macey turned around to see Misty standing there. "Sorry if I'm disturbing you. I just stopped in to check up on you two."

"Actually Misty, can I talk to you for a minute?" said Macey in a small voice.

"Sure, Macey,” said Misty. "What is it?"

"Well, you see....the thing is.....I just.....," Macey fumbled with the words for a minute, then finally spoke. "I'm really sorry for all the stuff I said about you today. I acted like a real jerk. All I could think about was showing you up and proving how great fire Pokémon are. But now I see what a great trainer you are, and I understand why you love water Pokémon so much." Macey looked at Misty with a remorseful look on her face. "I know it's a lot to ask, but can you ever forgive me?"

"Don't worry about it," smiled Misty. "I know you didn't mean any harm. You just wanted to prove how great your favorite Pokémon are. It happens to all of us sometimes, even me. You just have to remember not to get carried away." Misty placed a hand on Alex's and Macey's shoulders. "And neither of you is to blame for losing that battle. You both gave it your all, and......"

Just then, Nurse Joy poked her head in the door. "Misty, are you there?"

"What's up, Nurse Joy?" asked Misty as the three turned to look at her.

"I didn't mean to interrupt, but there's a phone call for you in the lobby," Said Nurse Joy. "Someone named Sakura wants to talk to you and Alex."

"Wait, Sakura? Awesome! I'll be right there!" said Misty. "Awesome! I'll be right there!" She turned to Alex. "Alex, I know you're still not feeling well, so if you don't wanna talk to her right now....."

"No, I'm all right," said Alex as he got up and took off the blanket. "I'll come with you. Macey, you wana join us?"

"Sure thing!" said Macey as she followed the two out of the bedroom.

****************

".......and that's how I managed to catch this awesome Lumineon!" said Misty as she spoke to Sakura through the video phone in the lobby. Alex and Macey stood behind her, watching the screen.

"That's great, Misty!" said Sakura on the other end. "I'm glad to hear you're doing well. Anyway, can you put Alex on? I kinda wanna talk to him alone."

"Sure thing," said Misty as she handed Alex the receiver. "Come on, Macey. Let's go check on our Pokémon."

"Okay," nodded Macey. The two headed over to the front desk, and Alex sat down in front of the phone.

"Alex, are you okay?" asked Sakura with a concerned look.

"No, I'm not," said Alex. "My stomach is in knots, and my chest is cramped."

"It's okay, Alex," said Sakura. "I know it can be hard losing your first big Gym battle, but don't beat yourself up over it. Everyone loses once in a while."

"Yeah, but Misty didn't just beat us, she destroyed us," said Alex. "And it's all my fault. Macey was counting on me, and I let her down."

"It's not your fault, Alex," said Sakura. "You battled as hard as you could, and from what Misty told me, you put up an incredible fight, especially with a type disadvantage."

"Then why did we still lose?" asked Alex. "Macey's had a ton of experience winning battles with type disadvantages. If she was good enough to make it to the playoffs of the Silver Conference, she should have had no problem beating Misty on her own. The only reason we lost is because my stupid self was holding us back."

"Alex, that's not...."

"Kamon was right! I am pathetic! He's probably already won his badge by now! He may be a jerk, but he's still a better trainer than me!"

"Alex, please don't...."

Alex's hands began trembling again as tears fell from his eyes. "Let's face it, I'll never should have accepted that stupid bet in the first place! Maybe I should just quit now and admit defeat! I was fooling myself thinking I ever had a chance of...."

"STOP IT!" Sakura shouted.

Stunned by Sakura's sudden interruption, Alex fell silent. As he looked at the screen, he saw that Sakura looked like she was about to cry.

"Please, stop it," Sakura pleaded. "I hate hearing you talk about yourself like that!"

"Sakura......."

"Listen, Alex," pleaded Sakura. "However you may feel right now, you are NOT pathetic, and losing was NOT your fault! And there's no way I'm gonna let you give up!"

Alex stared at the screen, totally at a loss for words. As Sakura blinked the tears from her eyes, she smiled a bit.

"Trust me, Alex. I know what it's like to feel that you're not good enough," said Sakura. "Back when I was a little girl, I battled against my sisters all the time, but no matter how hard I tried, I could never win. Usually, it wasn't so bad, but when I lost to Koume, it was the worst. Every time she won, she'd ALWAYS start teasing me. And it made me so upset that I'd run to Mom, crying my eyes out. And every time, she was there with a cup of tea and some sage advice. And one of her favorite sayings was, 'Winners never quit, and quitters never win’ Do you know what it means?"

Alex shook his head. "I.....don't think so....."

"It means that no winner quits on their way to victory, and no quitter ever wins because they threw away whatever chance they had. There's always a chance for victory, even if it's just a tiny one. If you quit, you're throwing it away. You know what I mean?"

Alex nodded, but said nothing.

"And I just know that if Mom were here, she wouldn't let you quit, either!" said Sakura. "She cared about me way too much to let me throw away a chance at victory. And I care about you way too much to let you throw away yours."

Alex shook his head again. "I know you're right, but I just feel so.....helpless. I just don't see any way I can win."

"Listen, Alex," said Sakura with a stern look on her face. "One loss against one Gym Leader does NOT make you a bad trainer. And you are NOT a bad trainer. Don't forget, I've watched you battle a million times at the Academy. You've beaten sixth and seventh-year students without batting an eye. Not to mention all the trainers you beaten in the local island villages."

"That's true, but....."

"And don't feel intimidated just because Misty's a Gym Leader. Deep down, Gym Leaders are just ordinary trainers like you and me," said Sakura. "A Gym Battle is about more than just earning a badge to get into the Pokémon League. It's about bringing out the true strength of the challenger and their Pokémon, making them a better trainer in the process. And in the process, the challenger helps the Gym Leader become stronger as well."

Suddenly, Sakura smiled and giggled a bit. "Now that I think about it, your loss is part of the challenge, too. In a weird way, it's a challenge to see if you have the strength to recover from defeat, learn from your mistakes, and come back to earn a real victory. I'm sure it would mean a lot to Misty if you became stronger as a result of all this, even if you had to lose once. After all, one learns more from defeat than victory. Yet another one of Mom's philosophies." Sakura stared Alex straight in the eye, still smiling. "So, are you just gonna give up and disappoint Misty, or are you gonna make her proud by showing her your true strength and winning that badge?"

A faint smile crossed Alex's lips. "Do you.....really think I can do it?"

"I don't think. I know," said Sakura. "I know you can win, if you trust in the true strength of yourself and your Pokémon! And once you earn that Cascade Badge, you can show Kamon what it REALLY means to be strong!"

Suddenly, the smile on Alex's face became a lot wider. "You're right, Sakura! If I quit now, I really will be a loser! So, I'll give it another shot! And this time, I'll win no matter what!"

"That's the spirit, Alex!" said Sakura. "You're finally back to your old self! Now victory is a small step away for you. If you and Macey believe in each other and your Pokémon, there's no way you can lose!"

"Thanks, Sakura. I feel a lot better knowing you're on my side. And I promise I won't let you down!"

"Glad to hear it. But for now, take some time to rest and prepare. And you might wanna talk to Macey, too. I think she'll feel a lot better knowing her tag partner is there for her."

"I'll do that," said Alex. "I have a feeling she could use a pep talk, too." Suddenly, tears began falling from Alex's eyes again.

"I'm sorry," Alex sniffed as he wiped his tears. "I can't believe I've been crying my eyes out like this the whole time. I must look like such a big sissy."

"Don't worry about it, Alex," said Sakura. "Everyone gets like that once in a while." Suddenly, Sakura's Pokégear alarm went off. "Oh, look at the time! Sorry Alex, but I have to go! Promise me that you'll rest as soon as you hang up!"

"I promise," said Alex. "And I'll make sure Macey does, too."

"Good luck with the rematch tomorrow!" beamed Sakura. "You'll be fine, as long as you do your best, and don't let anything discourage you! And remember that win or lose, you'll always be a champion to me!"

"I will, and thanks again!"

"I'll see you back at the Academy! Let me know how it all turns out! Bye!" The screen went blank as Sakura hung up.

****************

"Here you go, Alex. Your Torchic's good as new!" said Nurse Joy as she handed Alex a Pokéball. "And you look a lot better, too!"

"Thanks, Nurse Joy," said Alex as he accepted the Pokéball. "I'm glad I took Sakura's advice and got some rest." On a whim, Alex tossed his Pokéball up in the air, summoning Torchic. Alex picked it up and smiled. "Hey there, Torchic. I'm glad to see you're all right. You really gave your all in that battle, and I'm proud of you."

"Torchic!" Torchic chirped happily. Alex turned to Nurse Joy. "That reminds me, have you seen Macey anywhere?"

"She's in the cafeteria, talking to Misty," smiled Nurse Joy, pointing to a nearby door.

"Thanks. Come on Torchic, let's see what Misty and Macey are up to," said Alex as he picked up Torchic and headed to the cafeteria.

A few minutes later, Alex was sharing a meal with Misty and Macey. Misty had Azurill in her lap, while Macey had Vulpix in hers, and Alex had Torchic in his.

"I understand what you're saying, Misty. But.....I just don't know," said Macey. "It almost feels like I'm giving up, you know?"

"What do you mean?" asked Misty.

"Well, fire Pokémon have been my passion ever since I became a trainer and picked Cyndaquil as my starter," said Macey. "And when I was chosen for the Fire Red dorm at Pokémon Academy, it just felt so right. I just feel like my fire Pokémon are the source of that burning spirit I carry as a Fire Red student. And when I found out that I'd be facing you in a gym battle, all I could think about was proving how great my fire Pokémon were, and in the same way, my burning spirit that earned me a spot in Fire Red. I feel like if I use anything but fire Pokémon, that I can't stay true to my spirit, and that I can't call myself a real Fire Red student."

"I don't think that's true at all!" said Misty. Alex and Macey stared at her like she'd grown a second head.

"Hey, hold on. Hear me out," said Misty. “From what I've heard, the dorms at Pokémon Academy aren't just based on a type, but on a style. Instead of specializing in one type, a student should be able to take any kind of Pokémon, and teach it to battle in a style that fits the dorm they were chosen for. That's part of developing a bond with all of your Pokémon, which is the most important thing for any trainer. Besides, there's no rule saying you HAVE to stick with a certain type, right?" Misty winked at the pair as she finished her sentence. Alex and Macey looked at each other.

"What do you think?" asked Macey.

"Well, she does have a point," said Alex.

"Just give it a try, you two," said Misty. "With the right training, even the heart of water Pokémon can burn like a Cinnabar volcano!"

Alex and Macey both looked at Misty for a second, then smiled and nodded.

"You're right," said Alex.

"We'll give it a shot," said Macey.

Just then, there was a huge explosion heard outside.

"What the heck was that?!" said Alex.

"Not again!" exclaimed Macey. "Is there a day in Cerulean City when something DOESN'T blow up?!"

"Whatever it was, we'd better take a look!" said Misty. Alex and Macey nodded in affirmation, and the three headed outside.

****************

Just as they left the Pokémon Center, they saw Officer Jenny limping towards them, clutching her left arm. Her uniform was tattered and singed, and there were nasty gashes on her left arm and right leg. As she collapsed to her knees, Misty caught her by the shoulders.

"What happened to you?!" said Misty with a concerned look. "And what was that explosion?"

"Bomb went off.....at the police station," Jenny choked out. "Came....out of nowhere. Holding cell...demolished. Hammer and Nails....escaped....."

"Wait a minute!" said Macey. "Those were the two crooks who tried to rob the warehouse this morning!"

"I bet they're gonna head for the museum to try and steal the fossils!" said Alex.

"I've...got to.....get to.....the museum......” choked Jenny as she struggled to her feet. "Have to stop.....those crooks....before they get away......" Jenny was barely able to take a single step before collapsing to the ground. Misty quickly ran to her side.

"Whoa, take it easy!" said Misty as she cradled Jenny in her arms. "There's no way you can go in your condition! We have to get you to a hospital!"

"But, what about...."

"We'll take care of it!" said Alex suddenly. Misty and Jenny both looked at him with a surprised expression.

"We'll go after Hammer and Nails! Macey and I have both seen them battle before! I know we can beat them!"

"No, you can't!" pleaded Misty. "It's too dangerous!"

"I know it's dangerous, but we're the only ones who can do it!" said Macey. "Besides, it'll make good practice for our rematch!"

"But Macey...."

"Misty, you told us before that with the right training, even a water Pokémon can have a burning spirit. And right now, that's exactly what we need to stop those crooks!" Macey gave Misty a sly smile. "You're not about to make a liar of yourself, are you?"

Misty stared at them for a moment, and then smiled. "Not in a million years, Macey. Go teach those punks a lesson. I'll stay here and look after Officer Jenny."

"You heard the lady, Alex!" said Macey. "You ready to show those tools what we're really made of?"

"I was born ready!" said Alex. "Let's do this!" And with that, the two ran off in the direction of the museum.

"Good luck, you two," said Misty to herself as she watched the two leave. "And please be careful."

****************

Meanwhile, at the museum, Hammer and Nails had just found the fossil display.

"We ain't got much time, Nails!" said Hammer. "Let's grab the loot and get outta here!"

"I hear ya, Hammer," said Nails as he took out a crowbar. "I'll pry the lock off while you radio the chopper."

Just then, a stream of water came from across the hallway, knocking the crowbar out of Nails' hands. The two thieves turned around to see Alex and Macey standing in the entryway, with Marril and Starmie standing in front of them.

"Hiya, boys!" said Alex cheerfully. "Sorry to be such a wet blanket, but we're here to send you two back up the river."

"Well, well," said Hammer. "It's those two brats who got in our way before."

"So where's Little Miss Shorty Shorts?" sneered Nails. "She too chicken to face us?"

"If you're talking about Misty, she's helping an officer who got hurt badly by YOUR stupid bomb!" said Macey. "Besides, we're more than enough for you tools!"

"Heh, fine with us!," said Nails. "If you kiddies want a piece of us, we'll give ya the whole bucket!"

"We're in a bit of a rush, so we'll be nice and make it quick," said Hammer.

Hammer and Nails threw their Pokéballs into the air, summoning Houndoom and Mightyena. The two Pokémon growled at them menacingly.

"Time to teach these punks not to play with fire!," said Alex.

"Right behind you, Al!" said Macey. "Let's burn it up!"

The two closed their eyes and took deep breaths, then stared at Hammer and Nails with a look of pure confidence.

http://www.hotlinkfiles.com/files/854910_lmtod/3._shakunetsu_no_battlefield.mp3

"Okay, enough talkin'! Let's get on with it!" said Nails. "Mightyena, Shadow Ball attack!"

"Houndoom, give these wimps a taste of your Flamethrower!" said Hammer.

The black energy balls and flame streams flew toward Marril and Starmie at full speed, but neither Pokémon nor trainer looked worried.

"Marril, plow right through with Rollout!" shouted Alex. Marril curled itself up into a ball and rolled toward the two Houndoom like a bowling ball.

"Starmie, charge in with Rapid Spin!" shouted Macey. Starmie floated on its side and spun like a shuriken toward the two Mightyena.

Marril and Starmie burst through the Flamethrower and Shadow Ball effortlessly, and slammed into Houndoom and Mightyena full force, sending them sliding back a ways. The two enemy Pokémon were still standing, but looked quite shaky.

"Don't give them a chance to recover!" shouted Alex and Macey together. "Strike back with Water Gun, full blast!" Marril and Starmie let loose with powerful water streams that knocked Houndoom and Mightyena to the ground.

"Houndoom, hurry and get up!" yelled Hammer.

"Mightyena, don't let those pipsqueaks beat you!" yelled Nails.

"I don't think so!" shouted Alex and Macey as flames of passion rose around them. "Marril (Starmie), send them flying with a Tackle attack!"

The two water Pokémon rammed Houndoom and Mightyena hard, causing them to fly into the air.

"Time to finish this up!" said Alex. "Marril, use Bubblebeam!"

"Starmie, use Brine!" said Macey.

As the two Pokémon leapt up, Marril let loose with a stream of glowing blue bubbles, while Starmie fired a spray of salt water. Houndoom and Mightyena crashed into the floor, leaving craters where they lay unconscious. Angrily, Hammer and Nails called their Pokémon back.

"You two brats just got lucky that time!" said Hammer.

"We're not through with you yet!" said Nails. "We've still got two more Pokémon ready to....."

Just then, a voice came from the walkie-talkie that Nails had in his pocket.

"Agent Hammer, Agent Nails, come in! This is Field Commander Ray calling."

Nails answered the radio. "Sorry for the delay, Ray. Just give us a couple more minutes, and we'll have the fossils."

"Actually, there's been a change in plans. Abort the mission immediately."

"Are you serious?" asked Hammer. "After everything we went through to find 'em?"

"I'm dead serious," said Ray. "Forget the fossils, and get out of there. The getaway car's waiting outside."

"*sigh* Roger that," said Nails. "We're pulling out now." He put away the walkie-talkie and turned to Hammer. "Well, you heard the man, Hammer. Let's beat it."

"Right, Nails," said Hammer. He then turned to Alex and Macey. "So long, brats! We'll finish this another time!" And with that, he threw a smoke bomb at the ground, sending smoke everywhere.

Alex and Macey blindly followed the two criminals through the smoke, but found it hard to keep up. By the time they made it to the museum entrance, Hammer and Nails were taking off down the street in a red sports car. Seconds later, the car sprouted wings and twin jet engines, and took off into the sky. At that moment, a fleet of squad cars showed up. Misty came out of the lead car and ran toward Alex and Macey.

"Alex, Macey!" Misty called out. "Are you guys all right? What happened?"

"Well, the bad news is, Hammer and Nails escaped," said Alex.

"The good news is, they left empty-handed!" smiled Macey.

"So.....you guys beat them?" asked Misty.

"We didn't just beat them, we slaughtered them!" said Alex. "Their Pokémon never even had a chance to fight back!"

"And we owe it all to you, Misty!" said Macey. "Your advice worked like a charm!"

Just then, a patrolman approached them. "Umm, kids? I don't mean to be rude, but we're about to cordon off this area. I'm sorry, but I'll have to ask you three to leave."

"Sure thing, Officer," said Misty. "By the way, is Officer Jenny all right?"

"She'll be just fine, thanks to you," said the patrolman. "We got a call from the hospital. She's got a broken arm and some cuts on her arm and leg, but there won't be any permanent damage."

"That's a relief," said Misty. "Anyway, we'll let you guys get back to work."

"Appreciate it, and I owe a big thanks to your two friends here for chasing off those thieves!"

"No problem! See ya!" She then turned to Alex and Macey. "Well, I think that's enough excitement for one day. Let's get back to the Pokémon Center."

****************

The three walked back to the Pokémon Center in silence. Misty kept looking back at then, as if she was hoping they would say something, but neither of them said a word. However, just as the three reached the Pokémon Center, Alex finally spoke.

"Misty, we've made my decision!"

Misty turned around with a look of surprise. "Decision? What do you mean?"

"Macey and I have decided that we want a rematch!" said Alex with a smile. "And we're gonna win this time!"

"A...rematch?" asked Misty.

"Yeah!" said Macey. "We finally understand what you meant before about teaching a Pokémon to adapt to different battling styles!"

"Really?"

"Well, Alex and I both used water Pokémon when we were battling those two thieves. And I wanted to try out your advice, so I decided to battle the same way I would if I were using one of my fire Pokémon."

"So, how was it?"

"It was amazing!" exclaimed Alex. "Our Pokémon went in with full force, and completely dominated! They didn't even get a chance to fight back! And the whole time, I felt so....exhilarated!"

"Me, too!" exclaimed Macey. "It was strange, but when Starmie was battling, I got the same feeling I get when I use one of my fire Pokémon!"

"That's because of the bond you share," said Misty. "You remember the feeling you always have when you use fire Pokémon, and conveyed those feelings through your battle style. Your Pokémon understood those feelings, and responded accordingly." Misty smiled and petted her Azurill. "Pokémon battles are about more than just type matchups and battle strategies. They're about communicating with your Pokémon in a way that you both understand each other's feelings."

"And through understanding those feelings, your Pokémon can share those feelings, too," said Alex.

"That's right," said Misty. "But the most important thing of all is to trust your instincts, and stay true to your own heart. Believe in yourself, and your Pokémon will believe in you."

"Thanks, Misty," said Alex. "So, will you give us a rematch and another chance to win a Gym Badge?"

"Of course! I'd love to battle you again!" said Misty. "How does 10:00 tomorrow sound?"

"Sounds perfect!" said Macey. "We'll be there with bells on!"

"Glad to hear it!" said Misty. "Well, I have to get home now. You two get a good night's sleep, and I'll see you at the Gym tomorrow at 10:00! AND I'll make sure our judge is on time!"

"Sure thing!" said Alex. "Good night, Misty!"

"Good night, Misty!" said Macey. "See you tomorrow!"

The two waved good-bye to Misty as she walked off, and then headed inside the Pokémon Center.

The next morning, Alex and Macey stepped out the front doors of the Pokémon center, and made their way to Cerulean Gym. Having been rejuvenated by a good night's sleep and a hearty breakfast, the two were brimming with confidence. The two marched triumphantly through the streets of Cerulean City, until they finally arrived at the Gym. Upon entering, they saw a sign on the front desk that said "Pokémon Academy Gym Challenge This Way" with an arrow pointing toward the main arena. Upon entering, they encountered Misty and Daisy. Misty had already taken her place in the blue corner with Azurril in her arms, while Daisy had taken her place at poolside, flags in hand.

"Welcome back, guys," said Misty. "Are you both ready for our rematch?"

"We've never been more ready!" said Alex.

"This time, that badge is as good as ours!" said Macey.

Misty giggled a bit. "It's good to see you two have your confidence back."

"Yeah, I do," said Alex. "Thanks to you and Sakura."

"I'm glad to hear it," said Misty. "You and Macey may have made some mistakes, but you're both excellent trainers. I couldn't stand to see you quit now when you both have promising careers ahead of you." Upon hearing this, Alex and Macey both blushed a bit.

Suddenly, Misty's expression became more serious. "But don't think this means I'm going to go easy on you guys in this battle. I respect you two way too much to do that. I plan to battle with all my power, and I plan to win!"

"Not a problem!" said Alex. "We wouldn't expect anything less!"

"So let's all do our best, and may the best team win!" said Macey.

"Well then, let's get this battle started!" said Misty. "Daisy, start us off!"

Daisy smiled and nodded to Misty, then turned to the pool.

"This official Pokémon Academy Gym Battle Rematch between Alex and Macey of the Fire Red dorm and the Gym Leader Misty will now begin!" called Daisy.

“Get ready, and GO!” shouted Alex and Macey as they threw their Pokéballs. Marril and Starmie materialized onto the two platforms in front of them.

“Ah, so you’re both using water Pokémon?” said Misty. “That’ll make this an even battleground. This should be interesting.”

“You bet!” said Macey. “And we’re ready to dish out some heat in the third degree!”

“In that case, let me show you my picks!” said Misty. “For my first Pokémon, I choose Lumineon!” Misty tossed a Pokéball into the air, and Lumineon materialized in the water just below her.

“And for my second Pokémon, I choose……Azurill! Go for it, cutie!” Misty held out Azurill over the diving board, who ran to the edge and leapt into the water next to Lumineon.

Alex suddenly looked confused. “Wait a second! Why are you putting Azurril up against its own evolved form?”

“Azurril can handle it,” smiled Misty. “It may be just a baby, but it can hold its own against any heavy hitter. So, are you two ready to battle?”

http://www.hotlinkfiles.com/files/854873_zizfj/PokemonWorld_TVVersion_.mp3

“Marril and I are burning for action!” said Alex.

“Starmie and I are ready to set this place on fire!” said Macey.

The two trainers and their Pokémon stared across the pool with determined expressions as flames of passion rose around them.

"Let the battle begin!" shouted Daisy as she held up the two flags.

“Let’s do it! Marill, start things off with a Rollout attack!” said Alex. Marril ran to the edge of the platform, then quickly leapt up, curled up into a ball and rolled across the water toward Azurril at top speed.

“Starmie, get in there with Rapid Spin!” said Macey. Starmie floated on its side, and then flew rapidly towards Lumineon, spinning like a shuriken.

“Azurril, Lumineon, dodge and use Water Gun!” called Misty. Both Pokemon leapt out of the water and somersaulted over the charging opponents, then turned around in mid-air and fired powerful water blasts from their mouths.

“Marril (Starmie), counter with Water Gun at full-blast!” shouted Alex and Macey together. Marril and Starmie quickly fired their own Water Guns at their opponents, and the attacks collided in mid-air. The Water Guns from Marril and Starmie quickly overpowered the ones from Misty’s Pokémon, and Azurril and Lumineon were forced to stop their attacks and drop down in order to avoid the torrent.

“That was amazing!” said Misty with glittering eyes. “It’s been a long time since I’ve seen Water Guns that powerful! And I love your Marril’s Rollout attack, Alex! How’d you teach it to zip across the water like that?”

“Eh, it’s no big deal,” grinned Alex, blushing. “It was just a little trick I taught it during my first journey through Johto.”

“Well then, it looks like I’m going to have to kick things up a notch!” said Misty. “Azurril, use Bubble! And Lumineon, use Silver Wind!”

The two Pokémon unleashed their attacks, sending a stream of bubbles and blades of shining air their way.

“Time to power on through!” said Alex. “Marril, use Bubblebeam on Azurril!”

“Right behind you, Alex!” said Macey. “Starmie, use Thunderbolt on Lumineon!”

The two attacks plowed right through the attacks of Misty’s Pokémon, nailing them dead on. Azurril and Lumineon were sent flying into the air, but were still strong enough to keep fighting despite the damage they had taken.

“Nice shot, but I’m not ready to give up yet!” said Misty. “Azurril, Lumineon, dive into the water!”

“We can’t give them a chance to recover, or we’ll lose just like last time!” said Alex. “Marril, dive down after them!”

“Starmie, go down and give Marril a hand!” said Macey.

“Now I’ve got you both trapped!” said Misty. “Azurril, Lumineon, time to use the Super Secret Whirlpool Whizzer!”

Azurril and Lumineon surrounded Marril and Starmie, and began swimming around them in a circle. The two kept swimming faster and faster until a giant whirlpool began to form, trapping Marril and Starmie in the middle.

“This is bad!” said Macey. “I wasn’t expecting this! If we don’t break out of that whirlpool fast, we’re done for!”

“Don’t give up, Macey!” said Alex. “It’s time for our water Pokémon to show their true fire!”

“You’re right!” said Macey. The two stared at the pool with determined smiles on their faces as flames of passion rose behind them. Marril and Starmie, sensing the determination of their trainers, were also surrounded by passionate flames.

“Marril (Starmie), fire Ice Beam straight down! And do it like you mean it!” shouted Alex and Macey together.

The two Pokémon fired their Ice Beams down toward the bottom of the pool with as much force as they could muster. In a matter of second, the force of the impact caused a huge pillar of water to shoot out of the pool, which quickly froze into a giant pillar of ice. As Misty, Alex, and Macey looked up, they saw Marril and Starmie standing at the top of the pillar, worn out but still willing to fight. Azurril and Lumineon stared up, looking dumbfounded.

“We did it!” said Alex. “Now’s our chance to finish this battle with one last all-or-nothing attack! Macey, do you mind if Starmie is charged with helping Marril lower the boom on Azurril and Lumineon?”

“Not in the slightest, Al!” said Macey. “Let’s win this!” Once again, flames of passion rose around the Pokémon and their trainers.

“Marill, jump straight down and use Rollout attack!” said Alex. Marill leapt from the ice pillar and began spinning rapidly in mid-air as it plummeted toward the water.

“Starmie, crank up Thunderbolt to full blast, and fire it at Marril!” said Macey.

Misty’s jaw dropped. “No way! She’s attacking her own partner?!”

Starmie fired a Thunderbolt straight down at Marril with as much force as it could muster. Marril was now surrounded by electricity, and continued to spin as it fell. Seconds later, Marril hit the water with the force of a lead weight, creating a huge splash and sending electric bolts shooting in all directions. Alex, Macey, Daisy, and Misty stared at the pool as the water subsided, searching for signs of a victor. Suddenly, Marril poked its head out of the water at the edge of the pool where Alex and Macey stood. Looking tired and haggard, it climbed out of the pool, grinned at Alex, and clenched its fist in victory. As if on cue, at that moment, Azurril and Lumineon floated to the surface, rendered completely unconscious.

"Azurril and Lumineon are unable to battle! Marril and Starmie are the winners!" shouted Daisy as she held up the red flag. "The winners of this battle are Alex and Macey from Pokémon Academy!"

Alex and Macey stared at Daisy for a moment in disbelief, and then slowly, huge smiles crossed their faces.

“We….really won,” said Alex.

“We….actually beat Misty,” said Macey.

http://www.hotlinkfiles.com/files/1701431_nrcj1/09_-_shouri.mp3

“WE DID IT! WE DID IT! WE WON! WE WON!” cheered the two as they shook hands and high-fived each other. Starmie and Marril leapt into their trainers’ arms, who hugged them tightly, then held them up as they danced around the floor, still cheering.

Misty giggled a bit as she watched her two cheering opponents, and called Lumineon back into its Pokéball. “Good work, Lumineon. You tried your best.”

She then jumped into the pool, swam over to Azurril, cradled it in her arms, and kissed it on the forehead. “Thanks for giving you all. I’m proud of you, sweetie.” She then hopped out of the pool and walked over to Alex and Macey.

“Congratulations, you two,” said Misty. “That was the most intense battle I’ve had in a long time.”

“Same here!” exclaimed Alex. “I just felt so pumped through the whole battle! Water Pokémon really can have burning souls when they want to!”

“You’re right!” exclaimed Macey. “All through the battle, I was getting the same thrill I got when I use one of my fire Pokémon! It was amazing!”

“By the way Alex, where did you come up with the idea for that last combination attack?” asked Misty. “Weren’t you afraid that an electric attack would hurt Marril?”

“I got the idea from a trainer I battled once who used an Ampharos,” said Alex. “Rollout’s a rock-type move, so Marril’s invulnerable to electric attacks while using it. It was sorta spur of the moment, but I figured I could turn that into an attack somehow.”

“Well, you both had enough courage to take a chance, and it paid off,” said Misty. Not only that, but you had enough trust in yourselves, your battle style, your Pokemon, and each other, to pull off an amazing maneuver. I’m very proud of both of you.”

Alex and Macey just stood there, smiling and blushing.

http://www.hotlinkfiles.com/files/1701401_ztbpu/_shouri_no_badge__get_da_ze_.mp3

Moments later, Alex and Macey were standing at the side of the pool with Misty and Daisy, who were each holding a wooden box.

“Congratulations, you two,” said Misty. “You fought an excellent battle, and won fair and square.” She opened her box, revealing two shiny blue badges shaped like water droplets. “As proof of your victory, I am proud to present you both with the Cascade Badge.”

Alex and Macey accepted the badges, staring at them with huge smiles on their faces.

“Thank you, Misty,” said Alex. “We both learned a lot from this battle. And I feel like I’ve become a stronger trainer for it.”

“Me, too!” said Macey. “I still love fire Pokémon more than anything, but from now on, I’ll be open and accepting to all types! And I’ll teach them all to battle with a true burning heart!”

“Glad to hear it,” said Misty. “But don’t forget to stay true to yourself, no matter what!” The two nodded in affirmation.

“WE DID IT!” Alex and Macey shouted happily. “WE WON THE CASCADE BADGE!” The two struck a pose, flashing their newly-won badges like police badges. Misty and Daisy giggled as they watched.

“Oh, I almost forgot!” said Daisy. “I had a feeling you’d win today, so I asked a friend to make a special victory present for you!” She opened her box, revealing two large silver pendants. The pendants themselves were round silver plates, covered in red velvet but still showing silver around the edges. The Fire Red insignia was embroidered in the middle, and the necklaces were made out of white nylon.

“Special badge pendants!” said Daisy happily. “They’re like badge cases, only you wear them around your neck! Go ahead, try them on!”

Alex and Macey happily accepted the pendants. After putting them on, they pinned their Cascade Badges to the velvet.

“Wow, they look great!” said Alex. “Thanks, Daisy!”

“I’m glad you like them!” said Daisy. “I wanted to make a special gift, because I have a feeling that the badges you earned here today are gonna be the first of many!”

“Daisy’s right!” said Misty. “Keep on doing your best, and there’s no telling how far you’ll go!”

“We will! Thank you!” said Alex and Macey together.

****************

Misty, Daisy, Alex and Macey waved goodbye to each other as the two challengers left the Gym. As they faded out of sight, Misty placed a hand on her cheek as she smiled and blushed a bit.

“What’s up with you?” asked Daisy.

“It’s just that……for a minute there while we were battling, something about Alex sorta reminded me of Ash.”

“Trainers like him bring out the best in any trainer,” smiled Daisy as she placed a hand on Misty’s shoulder. “And you really were the best in today’s battle. I’m proud of you, little sis.”

“Don’t try to butter me up, Daisy. You still owe me dessert at Schirocco.”

“Heh, heh. You remembered, huh?”

http://www.hotlinkfiles.com/files/1701400_dao6v/41._tsuzukutachi__tsuzuku.mp3

As the sun slowly set over Gaia Island, the Academy hovercrafts pulled up next to the docks on the shore. Alex and Macey disembarked from one of them, smiling as they held up their badge pendants, gazing fondly at their newly-won badges.

“Alex! Hey, Aleeeeeeex!” came a shout from a nearby hovercraft. Alex and Macey looked over to see Sakura running toward them, waving happily.

“Hey guys, welcome back!” said Sakura. “So, how did your rematch go? I’m dying to find out! ”

“Check it out,” grinned Alex as he and Macey showed Sakura their Cascade Badges.

“That’s wonderful!” said Sakura as she suddenly took Alex’s hands in hers, causing him to blush. “I’m so proud of you! I knew you could do it!”

“It was all thanks to you,” said Alex. “If you hadn’t talked me out of giving up, I would have lost that battle before it even started.”

“You know what’s weird, guys?” asked Macey.

“What is it?” asked Alex.

“Winning this badge was awesome and all, but what’s even more awesome is how much I’ve learned on this trip. It’s almost like the Academy was teaching us even though we weren’t actually in class.”

“No, it’s not weird,” said Alex. “I feel the same way.”

“Speaking of learning, now you can teach Kamon a lesson!” said Sakura. “You won the badge, so now he has to agree to battle you!”

“Oh, that’s right! The bet!” exclaimed Alex. “In all the excitement, I almost forgot! Where is that jerk?”

As if on cue, the three heard Kamon nearby arguing with Harold, the curly-haired boy from Fire Red who was chosen as his partner.

“It’s all your fault!” yelled Harold. “Why’d your Nidoking have to go and beat up on Winona’s Pokémon like that! Not to mention my Numel got caught in the crossfire!”

“Oh, stop whining,” said Kamon. “It was your Numel’s fault for getting in the way. Besides, we won the badge, didn’t we?”

“Yeah, but we got chewed out by Nurse Joy for brutality! We’re lucky we didn’t get disqualified!”

“Hey, it’s not my fault she’s such a bleeding-heart pansy.” Suddenly, Kamon caught sight of Alex. “Speaking of bleeding-heart pansies, look what the Purugly dragged in.”

“Nice to see you too, Kamon,” said Alex. “I hope you haven’t forgotten about our bet!”

“Of course I didn’t forget,” said Kamon. “I was the one who made it. Now then, as you can see, I’ve won my badge.” Kamon held up the Feather Badge. “How about you?”

Alex proudly held up his pendant to show his Cascade Badge. “One Cascade Badge, courtesy of Cerulean Gym. And I won this badge by believing in my Pokémon and working with them as a team! Now, I believe you owe me a battle!”

Kamon stared at the badge for about half a minute. Finally, he smiled. “Sure, I’ll battle you……”

“Okay, then!” said Alex as he eagerly took out a Pokéball. “Get ready to see what my Pokémon can really do!”

“I’ll battle you some other time, when I’m in the mood,” sneered Kamon. “But right now, I’m not. So, I’ll take a rain check. So long, suckers.” Kamon pivoted on one heel, and walked off back to the Academy. Harold chased after him, yelling “Hey, come back here! I’m not done yelling at you!”

“Stupid Kamon,” muttered Alex. “I can’t believe he just blew me off like that!”

“Don’t worry about it,” smiled Sakura. “He can’t avoid you forever. Sooner or later, he’ll have to agree to battle you!”

“And when you do, you’ll show him what you’re REALLY made of!” said Macey. “A poser like him doesn’t stand a chance against your burning spirit!” Suddenly, Macey yawned and stretched. “Well Alex, it’s been a long day, and I’m exhausted! Whaddya say we head back to the Fire Red dorm for some dinner and cheesy sitcoms?”

“You read my mind,” said Alex. “Sakura, thanks again for all your help!”

“Don’t mention it! I’m just glad I could help,” said Sakura. “I’ll see you in class tomorrow!”

Sakura smiled and waved to Alex and Macey as they headed back toward the Fire Red dorm.

With the help of Sakura and Misty, Alex managed to regain his confidence after a crushing defeat, and came back to win his very first Gym Badge. And in the process, he and Macey learned a valuable lesson that helped them both become better trainers. Now, with a renewed spirit and a little more knowledge, Alex looks forward to the challenges that await him in the days ahead.

EPILOGUE

Meanwhile, a transport helicopter with a strange sun-shaped insignia was flying somewhere over the ocean. Inside were Hammer and Nails. Sitting across from them was a man in a bright red business suit. His red hair was tied back in a ponytail, and he wore thin wire-framed glasses.

“Commander Ray, why’d you call us back?!” asked Hammer. “We were this close to grabbing those fossils!”

“Yeah, and we woulda had them sooner if Little Miss Shorty Shorts and her two bratty friends hadn’t butted in!” said Nails.

“We received a report from our intelligence that the fossils shipped to the museum were fakes,” said Ray. “No doubt they scheduled the actual shipping for a later date, in case of theft.”

“So, I guess this job’s blown, huh?” asked Hammer.

“Yes, I’d say it is,” said Ray. “But that’s all water under the bridge now. We won’t make the same mistakes once our next assignment begins.” Ray pushed up his glasses and gave a sinister smile. “And once it arrives, we’ll show everyone the true power of Team Solaris.”

Good to see you back, Bluntasaur. I'll make my comments about this chapter once I get a chance to read it :).

EDIT: Man what a good chapter. I tell you, each of your chapters inspire me to further myself as a writer. I love how Character Development has come for Macey. It's good that she's now flexible with her Pokemonr rather than just using merely Fire-types. I also like Al's development into believing in himself after losses. Now, I'm waiting on Alex vs. Kamon. I hope Kamon beats Alex for some reason, lol.

This is a great story, plain and simple. I'd known already how it ended, but that's fine.

I really like your characterisation. They all feel real, three-dimensional and full.

I love this Fic. Although the hiatus has hurt it a bit - a few of you're old readers might have forgot the fic.

However, directors cut made me fall back in love with the fic. I've read it all from the start again and i'm impressed. I did think the most recent chapter wasn't my favourite, but at least they're back at the academy.

Also, I was mondering if I could make a Pokemon Academy RP on another forum. Besides the title everything else will be different.
