Pokemon and comedy a good match?

After such a serious, high stake confrontation in SM's predecessor, I'm glad it's funny. We've had enough Knights of Cerebus for now.

I think its kinda overwhelming in SM, like they're trying too hard. A lot of the humor doesn't work for me, namely how they use slapstick and those ridiculous faces. Character based humor is always great though. I honestly do miss the more serious tone that series like XY and DP had, though those series still had their funny moments.

Comedy can work with Pokémon, as long as it's used with moderation. Like everything, too much of whatever can spoil anything, and I feel that SM relies way too much on slapstick and random expressions, to be point of becoming overwhelming and detracting from more serious and important moments.

I personally think this series would have been funnier if it focused more on character-based humor, like having people facefaulting at Lana's overblown lies, or maybe having people sweatdrop when Kiawe becomes too fired up.

But even if we wanted a more random approach, even that needs a little bit of sense. For example, having a face suddenly turned into a Picasso is just too random and out of place, unless it is related to an art-related event. If it was about trying to piece things together, it would have been interesting if said head was turned into a puzzle which falls apart, or we got a magnifying lens pulled out of thin air. In other words, a more "contained randomness" is usually better and clicks better on a plot than "random randomness".

I welcome comedy, but it depends on the kind of gimmick they use to trigger the fun switch.

Personally, I never like physical banters where they trying to bring out the "fun" by hitting and/or attacking someone and showing the miserable moment of the respective character, I don't think it is funny in seeing someone acting pathetically. I also don't like exaggerated over-reactions such as for example when character is scared they are always scared to the extreme level of nearly wetting their pants and running for their life faster than topmost speed of Deoxys Speed Forme. And I don't like the meme faces such as Kiawe giving this JoJo facial expression, that is simply parodying characters from another anime, not something original to Pokemon.

I prefer intelligent humors, where they are bringing out the "fun" using word puns, sarcastic remarks, situational irony, atmospheric gap, imagery expressions, or even twisted physic for the mere sake of comedic effect. For example, in the Pokemon School episode of early OS, Brock dished out a full set of "panic kit" from his backpack including table and chairs and table cloth and flowers and coffee maker and blueberry jam... even Misty and Ash sweatdropped with these doubtful faces of "Where did all of these things come from?" And in the kid festival day also during OS, when Ash and Brock trying to emphasize kid's day is for boys, they express the "real tough man" part with the karate/samurai/sumo costume. For the puns and ironies and sarcasms, there just countless examples in OS where it is just too much to mention.

Many people say SM is as fun as OS, but I respectfully disagree. Because SM uses the former method mentioned above to bring out the funniness of characters, which is completely different from OS because OS is rather the latter case.

Comedy is subjective historically it has a place in the Pokemon but I personally don't find the Pokemon anime all that often.

If I get a solid league at the end of it I'm okay with the sm anime being silly as it wants to until then.

I always will long for a Pokemon anime that is battle focused as Yu-Gi-Oh is though.

Some series emphasize it more than others but Pokemon has always had lots of comedy.

With SM in particular I think a lot of the visual gags are both too over the top and too random. On the positive side, Team Rocket is great and Bewear might be the best gag mon ever.

I respectfully disagree. Surrealist humour is as valid as any other form of comedy, and as far as I'm concerned works as well in Pokemon as anything else. Making it less random would make it less funny. I don't actually understand why anyone would take umbrage because these scenes are really inconsequential (I'd go as far as to say ignorable).

I also respectfully disagree with the notion that there isn't any/is less/isn't enough character-based humour in Alola. SM is the most character-driven series of the entire run of the show, whereas everything else has been very plot-driven. Many episodes focus on the individuals, their traits and their thought processes, and plenty of humour has been derived from these. I can't help but feel that people are distracted by the face-planting slapstick just because it's more in your face. I'd argue that there is less of that even than the character-based comedy.
