By chance do you know how much share do Pokémon episodes in Japan? Has still the same success?

My educated guess is that it isn't as successful as it was in the late 90s, but it's still doing fine.

Its not, the series has fallen quite far even in Japan but while still being in ANN's top 10 rated series list its bringing up the rear usually and drops out of the top 10 fairly often. In the US it barely registers that anyone is watching it at all anymore.

Pokémon is always in the weekly top 10 of Japan, of course it's doing well.

Yes, Pokemon is doing very well.

The most popular anime series in Japan is Sazae-san, while Chibi Maruko-chan, Doraemon, One Piece, Dragonball Kai, Crayon Shin-chan and Detective Conan normally fight for the 6 next positions. Pokemon is generally one of the most popular shows not among these 7, sometimes managing to sneak past one or two of them.

It's pretty impressive that this stuff can go over 14 years on a weekly basis and still rake in a substantial enough amount of viewers to get that far up in the charts, let alone be able to continue on for this long anyway. Plenty of other shows have come and gone, but kids still tune in for Pokemon. I kind of wish some of those shows could borrow just a smidge of that kind of staying power, but eh....what're ya gonna do?

I've noticed all the top shows tend to be shows that maintain the status-quo and rarely, if ever, shake up the formula. Doraemon and Conan, for example, have had probably less plot development than Pokemon.

Kinda interesting, since in America it seems like shows try to shake things up in order to stay on top, but in Japan it seems they value stability. Cultural differences, I guess.

I think Pokemon's staying power is a combination of avoiding continuity lockout, mixed with the fact as a kids' show new audiences are being born everyday, and the fact it has the power of good marketing behind it.

Not as well as it once was, but its still strong.

The whole franchise is. Pokemon is close to being the highest selling franchise in Nintendo history, a place held by the master plumber himself. And there are even TV shows about the franchise as a whole, like Pokemon Sunday. The anime may not be as watched, but it's still doing well, just like anything else with pokemon in its name.

Considering it used to be in the top 3, I THINK NOT!
I don't think Pokemon has ever ranked that high, 'cept for maybe in the beginning, given that shows like Sazae-san and Chibi Maruko-chan and Doraemon have been around longer and have always had a high ranking amongst viewers there along with Crayon Shin-chan and Detective Conan. Sazae-san's anime has been airing consistently since 1969.

Those shows usually have the top five or six spots or rank within them.

Well, the other shows that rank weekly, usually, are:

Sazae-san: Anime came out in 1969, manga mid 1940s to my knowledge, and ended in the 70s, but the show is still going.

Chibi Maruko-chan: Anime came out in the early 90s.

Crayon Shin-chan: Anime came out in the early 90s, but since the death of the creator of its manga, not sure if the anime is still ongoing or not.

Doraemon: Anime came out in 1979 (iirc)

Detective Conan: Anime came out in 1996

These shows live in the top 10 list, and ironically, all of these shows are 10+ old.

As for current shows that seem to get into the top 10 weekly list, Pokemon, One Piece, and Dragon Ball Kai seem to get there. That Puricure (whatever) show was there a couple of weeks ago in the 10 spot.

Still going.

"Puricure" is Pretty Cure, more or less the new Sailor Moon; it's pulling in roughly the same number of viewers as Pokemon.

I know of it. A Mahou Shoujo series. I just said "whatever" because I couldn't recall which one it was. lol

Anywho, out of boredom, decided to check the list again.

For the week of February 22 - February 28, top 10 slots were...

01 - Sazae-san
02 - Chibi Maruko-chan
03 - One Piece
04 - Dragon Ball Kai
05 - Heart Catch Puricure!
06 - Kaidan Restoran
07 - Pokemon DP
08 - Stitch! ~Itazura Eirian no Daibouken~
09 - Detective Conan (No new ep aired; a remastered ep was shown in its place)
10 - Tamagocchi

Edit: Finally figured out the title for the Stitch series. Even though I was reading it, didn't click right off. It just hit me that Eirian was written in Katakana. Supposed to be Alien, so I guess the title means, Stitch! ~The Mischievous Alien's Big Adventure~

That's not bad for a show that's been on for along time.
Normally a show that's been on along time gets pretty low ratings cuz people would get tired of it.
I didn't know America's ratings were bad.
I read Cartoon Network's ratings on Toon Zone forums and they always seem top forum to me.
Though with the horrible time slot they have it in now it wouldn't suprise me either.

Dragonball Kai doing really well is surprising. Hasn't everyone in Japan watched DBZ by now? Now Kai is different, but its still mostly the same show repackaged into a shorter series.

Don't little kids in Japan have the DVDs?

That just shows how popular the franchise still is after all these years.

There's also the fact you can watch Pokemon online now in english. I maybe wrong since I'm not so familiar with the American way of showing the cartoon since i live in Australia but don't you guys have the new episodes shown online if you miss them on CN's website. I'm pretty sure I read that somewhere.

Anyway there's is alot of people who'll watch the unofficial uploads fans put up (that of course get taken down quickly). There's also the old episodes on TCPI's site that'd get hits.

However how many people watching the new episodes that fans put up online or off CN's site would actually watch it off TV?

Just something to think about. You have to have access to the ratings off TV, plus the hits off online sites (TCPI, CN and fan uploads) to get a good idea of how popular Pokemon actually is. Though somehow decipher from what countries they're coming from since well fan uploads anyone can watch. Then a few fans don't even bother watching it off the online sites or TV and buy the DVD's straight thus being new viewers through DVD's only. I know a few like that in my area now thanks to Australia now releasing the DVD's properly. I actually do this with the Digimon data squad episodes in Australia since 6 in the morning is just ridiculous.

In a way it's very hard to get a good idea of how popular Pokemon still is.

Pokemon anime in english has many ways of watching it. I know there's a few who didn't want to get up for the early airing in America on forums who've said they're watching it online now.

The DVDs are expensive, and the Dragon Ball anime is an OLD series that hasn't been on air for years and years. So I'd say no. And the series is definitely being watched by older folks who followed the series as kids too, and most of them didn't shell out for the DVDs either.

I love how bitter you've gotten.

I remember hearing a rumor that the new season of Digimon would replace Dragonball Kai, since it's in the time spot that Digimon Savers use to hold which before Zatch Bell held which before Digimon Adventure-Frontier held.

Any truth to that? I haven't heard about the new season of Digimon since it's original announcement, so I assume it's false.

No truth to that. Dragonball Kai is currently listed as a 99 episode series (and will most likely last longer than that). It was originally listed as a 50 episode series, and episode 50 seemed like a logical episode number for the Freeza arc to end at at the time, which is how the rumor got underway.
