I used to get really excited about exploring the worlds I was in. I played and explored every bit of gen 1, gen 3, gen 4, But other than that I have gotten either lazy or bored with the task of going everywhere and doing everything. I just breed and IV train stuff for battles now. I think I have only gone back to areas in X&Y because I had to find a TM.

am I alone in this?

I feel somewhat the same, when you have to go back to areas for items a long time after the story I usually forget about an item being there. Unless you're doing a specific Nuzlocke that forbids shops then I usually don't heavily explore unless needed to. Too busy admiring the scenery and avoiding petty battles.

But when I first played Pokemon I explored everything, depends what my goal is in the game. To build a competitive team, I won't bother. Have a long re-run and explore everything I may have missed then I will explore the region and everything it has to offer.

Depends on my mood. Sometimes I have little else to do, and I go and scour every area to find anything I can. But when I'm in a big hurry, like I want to get somewhere fast or have a very specific goal in mind, running into random trainers and other stallers gives me that "Bah, I don't wanna!" feeling.

I make sure to go through every area (usually going back after beating the story). Sometimes though, after months of thinking I've gone through every area and found every item or fought every trainer, I find something that I've missed, and it's a cool little surprise.

Of course if enough time has passed between playthroughs, I may forget about something and be reminded of it when I find that person or item.

I've played these games for so long (since 1998), I picked up an instinct as to where hidden items are. Other than finding hidden items, I just battle in-game Trainers, and catch the Pokémon I like. When I get bored, I stop playing.
