The brilliant minds behind the pokemon craze have come up with the next big thing, a virtual reality pokemon massively multiplayer online game! Game Maniacs is the company running the project and they are very excited about the new game. Essentially this will be the launch of an interactive pokemon universe where users can be a trainer or pokemon and it includes the potential to use a custom made skill. The name of the game is "Pokemon Art Online" or PKAO for short. We hope that everyone enjoys it when the game is ready to start.
Fast forward to launch day
A record shattering number of people log on, which makes PKAO the most popular online game of all time. After exactly 12 hours of normal operation, something goes wrong. A strange new condition named Evercrackitis causes many players to forget that they are human and start to believe that the game world is their real home. The company, Game Maniacs tries to pull the plug but it is too late. Virtual reality doctors inform them that it is impossible to forcibly eject users from the game because the shock will have a high chance to scramble their brains. The only safe way to shut it down is for the game to be cleared from within. Unfortunately using administrator accounts is not an option because everyone that has entered with an upper level access so far has lost their minds and become a part of the game.
The last hope is that a user or users logged in on regular player characters are able to clear the game and set everyone free. Only a small percentage of users still realize they are in a game but it is the best chance to rescue the players. Even with the stakes being so high, all may not be as it appears to be to the outside world.
The chat function translates all languages, so pokemon and humans can communicate. (although some users still choose to talk in poke speak)
Humans and pokemon fight separately
Pokeballs do not work
Due to events that took place, the PKAO universe is split into 3 "teams". There are however no restrictions on who is allowed to cooperate with who.
TEAMS
1. Humans: They were formerly trainers, students, firefighters, you name it. When the pokeball system went offline, the game became a free-for-all for survival.
2. Pokemon: Wild or formerly tamed, now they follow their own rules. Sometimes they can use weapons or man made devices but usually not very well. Like the humans, most of the pokemon have the goal of finishing the game but some choose to create chaos. (it is supposed to be a game after all)
3. Non player characters: Characters who are either programmed or users who want to protect the game world. (by choice or due to the condition) Their goal is to stop anyone from clearing the game because it would mean the end of the game world. (this team is playable and includes human and pokemon characters)
The game area includes Kanto, Johto (normal hardness) and Unova (super hard end game zone). The georgraphy is largely based on the hand held games but there are some noticeable differences. (like more roads) Originally things were going to progress differently but currently the only method of reaching Unova is by using one of several "secret" transportation modes. A hint to find one is automatically generated by the game after about 30 hours of server time (or close to 30 posts for us). The time between hints increases each time they are announced. The way to finish the game is rumored to be in the Game Maniacs Unova office, inside of the MMORPG. A game tip on a loading screen states that a stealth skill would be beneficial for those seeking to get through the final area.
Items and loot
Tools and makeshift weapons can be found all around. Everything is mostly of average strength but if the post is good then a character can occasionally find "stronger" items, so long as the event is kept relatively believable. Even the strongest equipment only grants a small edge though. Each character tracks their own items but its not required to do so.
Battle system and skills
When a character is knocked out, the user may either respawn at the nearest pokemon center with all items lost or restart with a new character.
Battling and skills are disabled inside of Pokemon centers and on Pokemon center property. Even if a skill would hit someone in a center, the damage would be reduced to zero.
Compared to the handheld pokemon games, normal attack moves are less powerful and less accurate. However it does not take much to KO a character in PKAO. For example, about 4 direct hits is usually enough to defeat most opponents, possibly less if the target fails to dodge or is weak. NPC's are easier to hit, a player controlled NPC is less easy to hit and a player controlled character is tough to hit. If there any disagreements in a battle, the system can be called and it will decide the outcome based on an examination of the fight data. Remember that if all else fails, running is always an option.
Custom skills
Anyone (with the exception of members of the NPC team) may create a home made skill. Each one needs a basic form and an advanced form. The skill can be nearly anything but it cannot be too strong, rather it should be something that can become dangerous if ignored by an opponent for long enough. Example: for a human, something like "Stick strike" which raises the damage of attacks performed with sticks. Non combat skills are permitted and the sky is the limit, subject to final approval.
The advanced move can be unlocked by knocking out 100 opponents. In a single post, a character can KO up to 5 NPC enemies if the battle is good enough and is at least 1 paragraph long.
Player character opponents are worth 10 NPC's but obviously are much more difficult to defeat. If your character gets KO'd, skill experience remains but all found items will be lost.
Members of the NPC team do not get a custom skill but instead are able to have limited control of 1-3 weak NPC's. Normally NPC's can be controlled by anyone for a short time but this skill lets team members control nearby NPC's anytime. The advanced form of this skill allows the controlling of up to 10 weaker NPC's or 1-2 "stronger" NPC's. Such as those with a special skill (like foresight to aid in detecting stealthy opponents) or higher fighting ability. (like a Charizard or a ninja) Controlled NPC's cannot fight in the same post that they join a user. A character is also much more vulnerable to being hurt during any recruitment posts, so it is not a good idea to try it in the middle of battle.
Other rules
No godmoding
No romance beyond PG-13

You may be as detailed or not with the sign up because some characters only exist inside of the game. It is optional to have a "real world" name, age, etc. Your history can also be based on what has happened in the opening hours of the game before it went haywire.
