This doesn't surprise me at all. The games are highly anticipated. Just wait for the high numbers after the release dates. And that's only Japan.

I was rather surprised by this, in fact (since this is my first time anticipating the launch of a new Pokemon title).

Has this ever happened before with any of the other Generations?

I know Ruby and Sapphire are the best selling GBA games, heck, Pokemon holds the top three for best selling GBA games. (RS, FRLG, and Emerald.) Source.

If your games had already sold a million and above before the games are released, you are awesome! I guess their decision to release the information relatively late in the cycle is successful, compared to the other generations.

The D-Link (or whatever you call it), the video chat, graphical enhancements, etc. all look brilliant!

I can't imagine how many pre-orders there will be once they have reached the US and Europe, if Japan already has 1 million pre-orders Ö

Wow, that's great! I hope that the games will exceed the amount Diamond and Pearl sold by the end of DS support (when everyone moved on to the 3DS).

DS games yes, but if memory serves me right, Red and Green were not at the DS, nor were any Pokemon game before Diamond and Pearl.

The foreign pre-orders probably have little in comparison to the amount for the japanese version due to the fact that it's barely known by people other than core pokemon players. Also, my bet is that the third version will beat Black and White's combined in pre-order sales.

And this, ladies and gentlemen, is the reason Pocket Monsters Black & White is on the DS instead of the 3DS. Nintendo wouldn't have gotten anywhere near this many pre-orders if this game was coming out on the new system.

Nintendo would have made a lot of money either way, as putting Black and White on the 3DS would probably boost 3DS launch sales by an astounding amount.

Uh-huh.

Except for the fact that B&W was being built for the DS.

Except for the fact that the 3DS devkit tech hasn't been in Game Freak's hands very long.

Except for the fact that we would've had to wait another 2 years before it could properly show off the 3DS hardware.

Except for the fact that as people work with the technology more, they get better at using it, meaning better coded games and better written games.

Except for the fact that a new system vs. one with an installed base isn't nearly as profitable.

Except for the fact that people who want the 3DS will buy it regardless and the people who want to wait for the 3DS will wait regardless.

It isn't as cut-and-dry as "Put Pokemon the 3DS to sell lots".
