How do they operate?

In the games, anime, and manga, we've never seen anyone charged for their services, so it can be easily assumed they're volunteer-run. However, another question remains: the nurses. Are the Joys all from one family (I think this was mentioned in the anime at one point), or is "Nurse Joy" more a title than anything else? Also, the Centers would still require money to run (unless there ARE centers that don't just use Pikachu on a treadmill as generators, which is an oddly cruel idea, when you think about it), so can it be assumed they're run off generous donations?

I'm just throwing out random ideas here to get conversation started, so feel free to add anything I might have left out. (Although the bit about generous donations does make for some rather interesting political implications, given Team Rocket is the Pokemon world's answer to the Mob... just where are those contributions coming from, anyway?)

could be government run, they also seem to house trainers that can't afford to house themselves.. as with provide food and water.

That seems government run to me... or maybe its run by the League

As for the joys... that was just the anime making silly excusses for the game. Other than saying they're all related there's nothing else I can say on that :-p

Simple. Drug selling.

It's true, Officer Jenny takes the drugs obtained from criminals, lets them bribe her, they get away free. She then sells them to Nurse Joy for a good sum, in which Chansey then hides the drugs in a fake egg in it's pouch. The previously escaped criminals then come, accesing the back room with a password "Xatu and Natu, landing", and Nurse Joy sells them the drugs for a higher price. She then uses it to provide power for the Pokecenter. Also, sometimes the criminals will give her Pokemon, such as Magnemite and other electric types, to power the center so she can skip on the bill. Giovanni also makes numerous donations, as Nurse Joy keeps a hit list of all criminal opposition of Team Rocket, and sets them up to be sniped.

Why do people assume the Pokémon League = government? Training's a freakin' sport. We may get movie stars as governors, but rarely if ever athletes. Really, some people insist on the Elite Four being politicians...

Unless, of course, the government is concerned about the wall being of ten-year-olds wandering the world without adult supervision.

I would say that it's all set up by the Pokémon League or whatever its called, since one foundation seems responsible for setting up the leagues, gyms, and etc. Probably under the same company or an affilate.

*wonders if the Indigo League poster in the Pewter City center has an signifigance on this subject*

*then begins to think about the Energies on that poster*

Haha, that's a good imagination.

Yeah, this is one of my pet peeves, too. Same with people who think that 'Pokemon Master' is a desk job *twitch*

The Joys' are all related, that was established in a few episodes. They're all sisters or cousins or whatever.

I've always assumed Centers were run by the Leagues. Trainers competing in the Leagues might not have to pay anything, but Gym Leaders probably have startup/upkeep fees and costs. For example they probably have to pay the League to keep their gym open. There may also be any number of donations from various organizations.

Hey, I never said the government = the pokemon league! (Not that you said I said that...)

but basically the logic was something along public schools and military, as pokemon are used in the game commonly for tasks in society and becoming a trainer is the first step in learning how to properly handle them. Not every liscensed trainer seems to want to be a pokemon master, so I doubt that it can be treated purely as a sport.

I also assumed that to become a trainer, your parents have to pay some heafty fee first. At least that's the only way I can see parents act the way they do and to help pay for some things.

Then yeah, of course the well beings of little kids also is important. There are a ton of protection laws and services that already cater that anyways :-p

Yeah, it's just that that idea has been thrown around so much that it's the first thing to come to mind when these kinds of threads are made.

Well, not as much as Giovanni or Ho-Oh being Ash's father, but it is enough. XD

Habunake... wow. That is some conspiracy theory. Ever consider a job at the Kanto branch of the Weekly World News?

It's worth pointing out that in Japan, a good number of hospitals are family owned, so there's a very good chance that the "Nurse Joy family" theory is right.
