Have you ever noticed that Charizard's and Ryhorn's cries are indentical?(go ahead, check) Is there a particular reason for this, or is it just something left over from a Red/Green oversight?

laziness, probably.

aerodactyl and vilplume share the same cry too. goldeen and caterpie, machop and omanyte, and so on...

Actually, Rhydon and Charizard's cries are the cries that are the most similar. The others have slight differences in pitch, etc....

Don't forget about Machop and Omanyte. Also Delibird's cry is a shortened version of Lugia's.

What about Registeel? I remember reading he shares his with Charizard or Aggron.

In Generation 1 there were only 37 different cries, as Aiko-Kun said. The differences are in pitch and tone. However, Rhyhorn and Charizard, Machop and Omanyte, as well as Poliwag and Ditto have nearly identical, if not identical, cries.

Ive noticed Cloyster and Fearow have a very similar cry. Pidgeot and Chansey too.
Its understandle for Pokemon in the same family to have similar crys, but its just lazy for completely different ones to have similar or identical crys.
Pokemon

In gen I, they had romspace limitations. Mew was only added, for example, as a hidden pokemon to fill up a small amount of extra romspace according to a developer interview.

Sharing the same cries and music between towns made sense then, as it saved romspace.

Remember, there were only 37 different cries in the original game for 151 Pokémon, so it's a guarantee that some would have similar or the same cries.

Add to that the limited space Pokemon Red and blue had....

Jigglypuff and Poliwhirl as well.

The reason why is because of the limitations of sound for the Gameboy and Gameboy Color. That is why you find that only Pokemon from the first two Generations have similar cries.

i had never noticed this untill a phychic attacked me
Electrode and Kadabra sound EXATLY alike
