I was thinking about Pokemon currency today, and I was wondering. What do you think the exchange rate for it is? It can't be like the American dollar at all- I hardly think anyone would give you $100 because your furry rodent is stronger than their furry rodent. And in the show as well- we've never seen anything that really indicates what they use, except when James finds the coin in The Ghost of Maiden's Peak (and if the dub is to be believed, they use American currency).
...why do I spend time thinking about this, when I could have found the answer to all the world's problems by now?

In the original, James finds a 5 yen piece, which is a bit less than an American nickel. But it's the lowest denomination of money, so they chose the equivalent here.

I would equate it to the dollar or the yen. People pay thousands of dollars for pets such as purebred dogs or horses. Some horses cost the same as cars, and even getting the chance to breed with a champion requires a LOT of money.

I think it's probably close to the Japanese yen, which is a little less than a penny per yen (I think ^^;). I don't know what the actual exchange rate is between the yen and dollar...

The Pokemon currency IS the Japanese yen. Just the symbol was changed when the games were translated.

The symbol in the English version is the english symbol for the yen only turned into a P (suggesting it's a PokeYen I guess).

Even if they are different currencies, I believe there's a 1:1 peg between the Pokémon currency and the Japanese yen.

Originally, the Pokemon Currency is yen (in Pokemon Games in original Japanese version the japanese kanji of yen is used) But stupid dubbers tuned them into "Pokedollars"
But I support original version the most. So, in my mind the Pokemon Currency is Yen.

Pokemon money iirc is called Poké by Pokemon USA. Based on the prices in the GB Games(P100 for a potion), The P=USD conversion is about the same as the ¥=USD conversion: That means 1P=~¥1=USD$0.01.

Maxim, does the original Ao/Midori games (and all the ones after that) say ¥ as currency? Can we get a pic or something?

No, the character they use is 円 - written after the number. ¥ is a romanised equivalent - written before the number. Both are used in Japan.
