Pokémon Evolution: Not Always an Improvement

I know there have been discussions about how some Pokémon start out cute, and then evolve into something tough and scary-looking, but what I'd like to discuss here is something a bit more specific: Do you vastly prefer some Pokémon's earlier sprites over their later ones? (Example: Perhaps you like the Cyndaquil sprite a lot more than the Typhlosion sprite). If so, which ones, and why?

In my case, I think Squirtle and Gible take the cake.

Squirtle starts out cute, and I like its sprite well enough, but Wartortle is really cool-looking. It has wings on its head and tail, and its body is still curvy and graceful, like Squirtle's. It looks like a cool creature from Greek mythology or something. But when it evolves into Blastoise, it looks like a blue King Bowser with pipes sticking out of its shell. (Don't get me wrong, Blastoise is still neat -- just not as cool as Wartortle, which is too bad, because the final evolution is of course the strongest).

When it comes to Gible, I think Gible is really cute, as well as cool-looking. His DP animation is also really fun to watch. After that, though, he evolves into what looks like a hammerhead crossed with a T-rex, bred with a kangaroo! Once again, Gabite and Garchomp are still neat in their own right, but not as cool as Gible.

Well, I prefer Bulbasaur and Ivysaur over Venusaur. The first two are cool looking, but Venusaur looks all old and tired, like it's about to fall over from exhaustion and then expire. It's like a young man turning old overnight. =/

In terms of "improvement" battle wise, tough luck finding anyone who wouldn't evolve their Gible considering Garchomp's uberness (personally I find Gabite to be the coolest of the line, but I like the other two).

One evolution I definately dislike more then then the pre-evo is Jumpluff

I love Chimchar, but Infernape looks like a sad clown. Monferno's a little bit better, but I think that's as far as I'd go with it.
Also, I've recently started to prefer Dragonair to Dragonite because Dragonite has the disadvantage of being Dragon/Flying. Of course, that can be a good thing but as a Dragonair, electric and rock attacks aren't as effective and ice would just put Dragon and Flying to sleep with it's x4 damage. There's more but I can't seem to think of them.

One thing I have noticed about the 4th generation evolutions of previous generation Pokémon are a lot of them seem to be, pardon for lack of a better word, but fat. Magnezone, Lickilicky, Rhyperior, Tangrowth, Magmortar, Mamoswine, Probopass, and even Togekiss have all seemingly put on the poundage. Now this is just appearance-wise, of course, but that's why it took me a while to warm up to these new Pokémon.

Most of those Pokemon are things I'd expect to be fat. It's not like Magmar, Piloswine, Nosepass, Rhyperior, or Tangela were anorexic.

I don't like Magnezone or Rhyperior's looks, well i do like Rhyperior's, but not as an evolution, I think Megnezone should have been the boring, expected cliche of adding 2 more magnemites, or alternatively they could have left Magneton alone, and Rhyperior should have been in a totally different evolutionary line up altogether, i find it to colorful and human for its predecessors, but that's just what i think...

I suppose it's hard to make Rhydon any rockier than he is now, so making him more sophisticated was the way to go. Let's hear it for Magmortar though, I love that evolution line now. If you'd have told me in 1999 that Magmar had a predecessor and an evolution, I would've scoffed and carried on playing Pokemon Blue.

Gloom: 60/65/70/85/75/40
Bellossom: 75/80/85/90/100/50

Um... what?

A lot of people complained about the new evolutions in Diamond and Pearl but, really, the only ones I dislike are Rhyperior, Magnezone, Electivire and Magmortar because I think their pre-evolutions were all great looking and, for the most part, usable in battle. (Incidentally, I think Magmar was probably the worst of the four in battle and I dislike Magmortar the least.) The new evolutions of these Pokemon were pretty much bigger and uglier versions of the originals; it makes me glad that Jynx didn't evolve into a big, butch, ugly shebeast if Electivire is any evidence of how a Jynx evolution would end up.

As for sprites, I really hate the way Ampharos looks in the later games compared to GSC. It got slimmer and less cute and cuddly after RS.

I can see what you mean, but I always thought he was lanky and as you put it "less cuddly".

I much prefer GSC's Ampharos, but that's just me.

I wish some evolutions could be just for aesthetics instead of power. I much prefer Bulbasaur or Ivysaur over Venusaur, as with Squirtle and Wartortle.

I hate Rhyperior, or at least as an evolution to Rhydon... ._. Rhydon looks great to me, and Rhyperior is so unlike it.

Yeah, I prefer Rydon, but I suppose giving people the option is what matters. At least two of my mates that have the game asked me for my Protector so they can have Rhyperior, just as I'll ask for Magmorizers.

Well when I saw Rhyperior originally (with his japanese name) I thought it was some kinda dragon gone wrong then i scroll down and O_O OMG!! I was so confused. Rhydon was pretty cool, Rhyperior is just weird. I also thought that Jynx was getting an evolution because Magmar and Electabuzz got one, I only thought of them as a trio because they're all right next to each other and they all got pre-evolution at the same time.

God I hate Squirtle, it's so plain! I prefer both Wartortle and Blastoise to it though, and I agree about the whole Venusaur thing... Venusaur just looks like some ugly wrinkley guy.

I also hate Electrivire, Probpass and Rhyperior, but I like Magnezone.

All of the grass starters seem to have issues looking right in their final evolution. So far Turtwig is the only grass starter that looks like it can still kick ass and be cool looking.

Treeko and Chikorita's final evolutions are way too drastically different from the pre-versions and are so out of the blue.

And Bulbasaur's looks like it's dying of old age.

No, please! A Jynx's evolution would destroy my poor eyes T_T

Meh...I prefer...

- Pikachu than Raichu.
- Nosepass than Probopass.
- Togetic than Togekiss.
- Trapinch than Vibrava.
- Trapinch than Flygon.
- Ponyta than Rapidash.
- Tangela than Tangrowth.
- Lickytung than Lickylicky.
- Poliwhirl than Poliwrath.
- Poliwhirl than Politoed.

That's all, folks, I think. Then there are some Pokémon I neither like them nor their evolutions, or some that I like the same way both.

I think

looks better than its evolutions. (but it's colourless in my game)

I usually like the middle evolutionary stages more.

Quilava>Typhlosion
Bayleef>Meganium(Meganium doesn't look like she belongs in the same line)
Croconaw>Feraligatr(ZOMG! Caveman!)
