Prologue
Littleroot was dark, save for Professor Birch's lab where they constantly studied pokémon. All was quiet, a gently breeze swept by and Hoothoot called from nearby trees. People slept in their houses, undisturbed by the silence, except for one expectant trainer.
Riot stood beside her house gazing over at the lab, yet still wearing her PJs. She would go ahead and set out for her adventure but she required a pokémon and she was yet to be the legal age to obtain a pokémon; the wait didn't calm her nerves.
The wind blew and muffled Riot's breathing with her hair, which she quickly swept aside frantically to stand straight again in an epic pose. The wind once again blew her hair into her face and she gave up and began to enter the house again when something caught her eye.
A light flashed in the distance, a light down the road towards the wild pokémon. No one dared enter the road, fear of being attacked by pokémon unless they themselves had one. Riot watched as the flashes of light continued until it made her step away from her house and began to approach the road. The flashing continued and even intensified making Riot frantically run towards it.
Riot's bare feet wiggled against the short grass as she stood on the fridge of the tall grass. "Hello?" Riot called, she scanned the tall grass until she saw a glimpse of the light. Her head eyes shot towards it and she stood, staring. The light came, like lightning it crept around the grass searching for a target.
"An electric pokémon?" Riot wondered and she gingerly stepped into the grass. Lightning struck across the grass and the grass in front of Riot began to rustle frantically. She stepped back for a second, her ears straining to hear the pokémon. "Hello?" The grass shook and the pokémon ran through the grass approaching Riot with lightning speed. "AHHHH!!"
Riot flew back outside of the grass as a pokemon tackled her stomach. Her back hit the short grass with a thud and she quickly opened her eyes to see a wild Pichu on her stomach. "A..... Pichu?"
"Pi?" the Pichu yelped. Riot gasped as the Pichu suddenly noticed where it was and it's fur prickled.
"No wait!!" Riot yelled, trying to push the Pichu off her before.... "PICHU!!!!!" The thunder attack surged through Riot making her scream, it seemed to last forever but only lasted a few seconds until Riot lay on the ground out cold with an exhausted Pichu on her stomach.
the next day...
Riot suddenly rolled off her bed and fell face first into the floor of her room. "Ow..." she muffled, her face bared into the carpet.
"Riot? Are you up? Hurry up! Professor Birch only has three pokémon you know!" Riot's mother called from downstairs.
Riot opened one of her eyes and surveyed her room from the carpet. "Was I dreaming?" She thought, rolling the rest of her body off the bed and onto the carpet where she got on her knees. "I was dreaming?" she wondered, glancing at her hands and moving her fingers to see if the thunder attack affected her at all. "I guess so."
"Riot!" her mother called.
"AH! Right!" Riot scurried to her feet and suddenly fell face first into the floor again. "Ow." She got to her feet slower this time and quickly tore out some clothes from her dresser and threw them on.
Riot's room consisted of one dresser, one bed, one computer desk, one computer, and a crap load of 'How to be a Trainer' books and 'Being a Trainer for Dummies'. The room remained slightly barren out of fear of tripping on anything else other then the books and murder her face even more. Her shoes lay sprawled next to the stairs where she could easily access them but unfortunately tripped on many a time on her way to and fro.
"Riot! If you don't move quickly you won't be able to eat breakfast!"
Breakfast was the last thing on her mind. Riot quickly pulled a red hoodie over her head and popped a red cap on her head labeled with a large yellow 'P'. She quickly duck and rolled across her trainer magazines towards her shoes and started to strap them on when she uncoiled.
The shoes finally secured Riot jumped to her feet and hopped on the railing of the staircase where she slid down and dismounted onto the second step and hoped over the opposite rail and landed next to the TV with her arms spread wide above her as she finished her acrobatics.
"Accomplished another dismount?" Riot's mother asked from the dining table.
"In fact I did!" Riot announced, dropping her arms and running towards the fridge.
"I made breakfast you know."
"I don't have time for breakfast! I'm just looking for something quick and easy to eat." Riot stopped at this statement. "Looking for something quick to eat." She corrected herself and grabbed a few slices of bread.
"Be careful eating that. Make sure you come back after you talk with Professor Birch. There's something I have to give you." Riot's mother said picking at her eggs.
"Yeah, yeah, sure of course." Riot said stuffing down a piece of bread into her mouth.
One wouldn't call them family at first glance even though they looked the same. Both possessing brown hair yet Riot possessed green eyes. Riot was only slightly shorter then her mother at a measly 4 feet 10 inches. She doubted Professor Birch would believe that she was really the right age. Fortunately her birth certificated was stuffed securely in her black bag that sat on her shoulders.
"Have fun." Riot's mother cried as Riot raced for the door.
"Humpf." Riot mumbled with bread crumbs spitting from her mouth as she spoke.
the lab...
Professor Birch sat in a chair shifting through papers and typing away on a computer. His daily chores were done and now he went down to messing around with his hobby.
"Professor Birch!! Professor Birch!!!" WACK!!
Professor Birch turned around in his swivel chair and looked at a face planted Riot not too far from his research desk. "Riot I take it?"
Riot quickly stumbled to her feet and saluted. "Reporting! I'm here to obtain a pokémon for traveling with!" Riot said smiling, one missing canine tooth is noticeable. "Which ones can I get? Will it obey me? What kind of attacks does it have? Do I get to leave right after I get it? What does it -"
"Your late." Professor Birch turned back to his computer and began typing. "All the starter pokémon are gone. I gave them away already."
Riot's mouth dropped to the floor. Her hands gripped the back of the chair and quickly spun the chair. Professor Birch spun around ten times before stopping to face Riot again. "What do you mean there's no more? I'm not that late am I? Please you have to cut me some slack! There's got to be at least one pokémon that you have!"
Professor Birch rubbed his chin, thinking. "Nope. You're not that late but many new trainers come early from all over to get their pokémon. You should have been faster and taken that into account. I had extra pokémon other then the three starters but I gave those away too."
Riot held her head and sunk to the ground. "You mean? I can't start my pokémon adventure?"
"Nope. Maybe tomorrow I'll have more pokémon. I get some sent in from different regions but not every day. All I got now are pokéballs."
"You have to be kidding me! I can't wait one more day! Ah, this is the worst day of my.... Wait what did you say?" Riot asked, on her knees in front of the professor.
"All I have are pokéballs."
Riot quickly stood up and shoved her hand in front of Professor Birch's face.
"What? Do you want a cookie?"
"No! I'll take one pokéballs! That's all I need! Oh and one of those pokédex things too. I read about those." Riot commanded, rubbing her chin as she remember the magazine she read.
"One pokeball?"
"Yup!"
"Just one?"
"Yup!"
"Why?"
Riot smiled, her missing tooth pronouncing itself proudly. "I'm going to start my pokémon adventure that's why."
"If you insist. Be careful out there though. Not having a pokémon could be bad for your health. Or... worse for your health." Professor Birch opened a drawer at his desk and produced out a pokédex and one pokéball, he handed Riot the pokéball. Birch opened the pokédex and pressed a few buttons. "Your name is Riot... Age 11... I'm assuming." The pokédex responded with a sparkle sound. "There.. It's yours. Be careful now. Last thing I want to happen is you be killed because you couldn't wait for a pokémon."
Riot smiled again and slipped the pokédex into the pocket of her hoodie. "Don't worry. I'll be back with a full pokédex before you even know it! And I'll still be alive!" Riot yelled, running out of the lab with a still stunned Birch sitting in his chair.
"I did something really stupid today." Birch said, rubbing both his temples.
