As a person who has played Pokemon for quite some time, I've seen and played many different versions of the games. As each new game is released, many new improvements are made, but at the same time, some quirks and just plain annoying aspects of the game persist.

So, of the games that you've played, what have you liked most about it (features, playability, etc.) and what have you disliked the most?

To begin things off, I have to say that of the games I've played so far, the best are Pokemon Diamond and Pearl, and Pokemon Platinum (though I like Platinum the most of the three). These three games make very good use of the capabilities of the Nintendo DS system, feature some of the best graphics found on any Pokemon game and has a story--while similar to other Pokemon games--at the same time is quite unique.

This being said though, there are some gripes I have.

Number one is the inability to participate in official Nintendo Events in Canada. It's just not an option. Not one single event announced by Nintendo has ever been available in Canada, including those events which unlock certain portions of the game. To require a player from Canada to travel across the border into the US just to have the opportunity to participate in an event is quite simply cost prohibitive for most not to mention impractical. If certain parts of the game are only available to people in certain countries, then how does Nintendo expect players to be able to enjoy all that the game has to offer?

Secondly, if there is anything I would change on Platinum, it would be the ability to challenge players around the world without having to register their friend code. I would love it to be able to visit an area in the game where I could challenge players from around the world regardless of whether or not they're registered as a friend.

Ah well, that's just my take on these games. Any thoughts?

I like the addition of extra detail for the world - weather, perspective, lighting at different times of the day. The music has always amused me, there are very few tracks I outright don't like.

Dislikes, well, the official events seen to only ever happen in Japan and America - and even then, apparently only some of America. Much as I like pokémon it's really hard to resist the tempation to fan rage when I can't access all the content of a game I like so much

I have the opposite opinion. D/P/Pt bugs me in its slowness. not to mention, the routes are so small...

I also don't like having to train to 60 and 70 off level ~40-42 Pokemon before the Elite Four. and I don't like having them ALL being Rock/Ground/Steel and Golbats. this was better in Platinum with that Sendoff Spring having Bibarels and Staravias and etc at the same levels.

Likes: Soundtrack, strategy, competitiveness, tons of new features in each generation, awesomeness.
Dislikes: Friend code system, repeating story, event pokemon, needs more exploration.

Likes: Storyline, most Pokemon sprites, Soundtracks, Battling, EV-training, GTS, Battle Tower/Frontier, Rivals, capturing legendaries, all types of Poke ball, event Pokemon, villainous teams, elite four, HMs.
Dislikes: extensive sea routes (mostly in R/S/E), Bidoof

It seems there is a good majority of people who are not liking very much of event Pokemon or Pokemon events of any kind. I especially dislike the events that opens up a new part of the game, but then those events are restricted to only a few areas. So, why then are we all paying the same price for the games when only some of us can get access to the whole thing? Hmmmm...

I've written a letter to the Pokemon company, and hope to receive a response from them soon on this whole event issue. Any one wanna bet I'll get a form letter rather than a proper response?

The dislikes aside, I will say this, I'm really looking forward to trying out the Pokewalker. Now that sounds to be quite fun to play around with. I missed out on the predecessor to this little gadget when Pokemon Silver and Pokemon Gold were released for the GBA, so this'll be my first time with something like this. I have to applaud Nintendo for responding in such a neat way the complain some people have about video games, namely that it keeps the kids glued to a TV screen or laying in bed with their DS in their hands. The Pokewalker actually gets people outside to do some walking! Gaming while getting exercise at the same time... who'd a thunk it?

Re the whole event pokémon thing - personally I don't mind having one or two pokémon that you can only get at special events - it worked pretty well with Mew in G-I, and I liked the idea of the mobile phone Celebi thing in G-II (although I wish they'd bothered giving other countries an alternative way to get it when it became apparent that we weren't getting that particular feature) - but by this point there's just an ever-increasing number of pokémon and sidequests that you can only get if you live in the right country at the right time, and they're adding multiple pokémon each generation and only 1-2 events that any normal people have any real chance of being able to get the particlar pokémon from - and that' if they live in the right country.

It's fine if you're in Japan, where they seem to have events every couple of months giving away away one of the numerous event-only legendary pokémon or some variant of an ordinary pokémon, but everywhere else might have maybe an event every couple of years, if they're lucky.

Which is all especially irritating when, as someone has already mentioned above, it's not only an event pokémon that's involved, but often a sidequest and game content which is simply not available to the majority of the players by pure virtue of the fact that they don't live in the right country.

I like event pokemon. If you've ever been to one, they are a ton of fun. What I hate is action replay, it totally ruins everything. There are also a number of dislikes from the 4th gen, but I still like it overall.

Unfortunately, unless I and every other Canadian player who wishes to partake in these events, it would cost us literally hundreds of dollars as we'd have to travel out of country to do it. Liking an event is easy... if you happen to live where an event normally takes place. If you don't, makes it pretty inconvenient wouldn't you agree?

Events are a great idea, I'm just sick of being disappointed by being overlooked because I'm not Japanese enough to matter. You'd have thought that there'd be an efficient way to at least give customers ONE chance to get these pokémon without having to actually take time off work

Now that they can distribute events over wifi, you'd think the problem would be solved; but no, they make the wifi distribution events time limited. What on earth's the point of that? When I bought Pokémon Platinum, it was already too late for me to get Rotom's different forms or Darkrai. That just seems needlessly annoying.

Which is why WiFi events are awesome. Nintendo just needs to be better about them. I got Pearl and waited forever for the WiFi events and they never came which is why I borrowed an action replay ONLY to get the required items. Either way I want events to stay. Besides the event pokemon, you get to play the card game, play in tournaments and get free action figures, cards, ect. and more than just the event pokemon.

I don't get it. With wifi, why can't you get event pokemon directly from Nintendo? Why do you have to be near a GameStop or similar store. Directly from Nintendo = anyone with a wireless router can get their event pokemon instead of limiting them to people from certain countries.

I like the Pokémon battle system, but sometimes I wish it was more like the stereotypical JRPG battle system...

Yeah, I wish to hell they would be available through Ninendo's website or something like that also. The nearest Toys R Us from where I live is 2 hours away, and there's no Gamestop to be found within the next 1,800 miles from where I live also... which sucks, because I really wanted to do the HG/SS Celebi/Giovanni event...

As I mentioned before, I emailed Pokemon.com about the issue of events yesterday. I still have not received a response from them, but when I do, I'll certainly post it in here for everyone. I certainly agree, with the introduction of WiFi, there is no logical reason for events to only be made available through a limited number of retail outlets. If it just has to do with event Pokemon, I'm not so concerned, as trades can be done for them, but when you are unable to take advantage of an event which allows you to unlock a portion of the game... well to me that is just unfair to those people who can't go to such events and therefore miss out on a part of the game they paid for.

I love Action Replay, because without it there would be no way for someone like me to ever get a Darkrai or Shaymin or Arceus. Pokemon like those are the only thing I ever use action replay for, and I do everything else legitimately, but when people like us aren't capable of going to events, Action Replay is our only choice.
