This is a fanfic I began on a different website but I was booted because of inactivity. It starred a character from Canada who flies to Kanto and leaves on his adventure with his cousin (Ash Ketchum, though not intended to be entirely true to the anime). I had originally intended to have it range from Red to Platinum. When I looked at it from a later chapter, I didn't like how it began, I didn't like how I stuck in too many references to other things, I was worried that I was making the main character too perfect, and I didn't like how I handled the starter Pokemon. Lastly I didn't like the way it was going. So now I'm going to start over and try again, give it a new name and try to finish it. I'm going to rate each volume individually simply because it's going to start off tame, but as the story develops its will become progressively... gritty (in more ways than one). I am in no way expecting this to be good, it's just something that I had on my chest for quite a while. Please forgive me if the title sounds generic, I thought it sounded better than "Custom Version". Anyway, sometimes less is more. One more thing, please be as critical as you can, I really want to get better at this.
Pokemon: Joshua's Journey
Volume 1 [PG-13]
Prologue
The sun was setting and the desert planet of Tatooine had began to fall asleep for working on the harvest calls for the most effort. All of the planet was dormant, except for Luke Skywalker. Luke stared into the setting sun and began to wonder when he would finally be able to leave his scorching desert of a planet and fight his imperial oppressors.
The light from the television screen traveled across the dark room and landed on a boy who was lying on a couch on the opposite side of the room; the light was slightly reflecting off his greasy black hair. Suddenly, the door flung open and the light was flicked on, in walked the boy's mother who instantly began picking up dirty clothes off the ground.
"Josh!" the mother groaned, "Just because you're on summer vacation, doesn't mean you don't have to pull your load around here!"
"C'mon, Mom...give me a break," the boy replied, "It's only the second day-"
"That's no excuse, come on downstairs with me!" she ordered.
"Aw geez..." Josh mumbled, "Okay, let's get this over with."
Joshua unwillingly followed his mother down a short flight of stairs and followed her to the pile of mail in the kitchen where his step-father was also waiting for him, holding a piece of paper.
"Alright! Mom, Robert, what do we got!?" Joshua hastily asked, "Robert, what are you holding?"
"I'll tell you," Joshua's step-father answered in a mellow British accent, "But first, your mother wants show something to you..."
"Right! Mom, what is it?"
"We got your report card in the mail this morning," she answered.
Josh was slowly beginning to turn pale, "...And?" he squeaked.
Josh began staring his mother and step-father down, waiting for either of them to deliver the verdict.
After a few seconds of silence, his mother finally exclaimed, "You've been promoted into high-school!"
Josh instantly breathed a big sigh of relief, "That's... great!" he panted, "Really." Catching his breath, his attention now turned to his step-dad. "Okay, Robert, what are you hiding now?"
"It's an itinerary, a plane ticket."
"A plane? To where?" Josh asked, beginning to sound more frantic.
"Don't worry, sweetie," consoled his mother, "We've been arranging this for you since before your report card came in the mail."
Josh breathed a relieving sigh again, "Even better. So where are we going?"
His mom and step-dad looked at each other and his mom replied, "You are going to take a plane to Viridian City, where you're going to be picked up by auntie Delia and you're going to spend your whole summer vacation there."
Josh couldn't believe what he was hearing. His face was turning beet-red in excitement, "You're serious? You're actually serious?"
"We're serious! Now go and pack your carry-on stuff! I'm washing your clothes and we're going to take you to Vancouver Airport as soon as we pack them!"
Josh dashed into the entry-way and almost slipped on his tile floor while trying to approach the stairs. He climbed the stairs twice as fast as he descended and quickly turned towards his room. He swung the door to his room open so hard that a framed painting fell from it's place when the door struck the wall. Josh began to rummage through this desks, drawers and cabinets, throwing everything he wanted to bring in his backpack and the useless junk in the corner of his room.
Back downstairs, Josh's mom was taking her son's clothes out of the wash and throwing them in the dryer. Walking to the kitchen to get herself a drink, she was intercepted by her son who had redressed himself into a shirt with his favourite band on it, a brown hooded jacket and pale blue jeans. After examining her son high and low, she planted a kiss on his cheek. "You look handsome, sweetie."
"Yeah, yeah..." Josh replied with slight embarrassment, "Where are you car keys?"
"They're by the computer-"
"Thanks!" Josh snapped as dashed towards his mom's office. He saw the car keys on the desk and quickly swiped them and dashed out of the house with his backpack in hand. Entering the car, he put the keys into the ignition and started the engine before climbing into the back seat. From the back he fiddled with the knobs until he found a station that played classic rock. Feeling comfortable in his seat with Led Zeppelin coming from the speakers around him, Josh slowly drifted into a deep sleep.
Upon waking up an hour later, excitement was returning to the young man again and he was out of the car faster than lightning. Looking around, he found himself at YVR, the Vancouver Airport. Josh's mother took his suitcase out of the trunk of the car and gave it to him.
"Alright Josh, follow us, we'll get you all set up," told the step-dad as he led the way into the terminal.
Josh willingly complied and followed them into the terminal. They led him to baggage-check where his suitcase was thrown on to a large conveyor belt and pulled into the intricate maze of baggage transport.
"Here's your itinerary, honey." told mom as she handed Josh a piece of paper, "You be good and listen to auntie Delia..."
"I will mom, I'm the good son, remember?"
"I know," mom replied as she planted a farewell kiss on his cheek.
"Bye mom, bye Robert." Josh shouted as he was led away by airport staff. He was led to the gate where people were already boarding the plane. Josh took a seat and stuck his backpack overhead after taking out a pack of gum. During the flight he managed to watch three movies and listen to a play-list of music to kill most of the time. The rest of the time he just spent it by chewing on a pack of gum which assisted greatly in the landing to avoid his ears popping. Instantly upon landing, all the passengers began to disperse, Josh was caught right in the middle of the rage, trying to go with the flow to avoid being crushed. He finally broke off from the crowd and took his place at baggage pick-up. Waiting patiently for his suitcase, he was suddenly attacked by someone! One flailing, the other laughing, Josh pried the arms of his attacker off of him and turned around to see that he was the victim of his cousin, Ash Ketchum. Josh quickly broke a smile.
"How you doin', big guy?" Ash laughed.
"I'm doing pretty fine, I can see you're in a good mood," after greeting with his cousin, Josh's attention was now set on his aunt. "Hi, auntie Delia."
"Hello there, Josh," she replied, "My goodness, you've grown."
"Eh, I get that a lot," Josh told as he grabbed his suitcase from the conveyor belt.
Satisfied, Delia asked, "Shall we go to the car, boys?"
Josh and Ash followed Delia to the car, each exchanging stories of the times when they were away from each other.
"Josh, I think it's time I told you the real reason why you're here..." told Ash.
"Okay then, spill the beans." Josh demanded.
Ash hesitated to try and find a surprising way to put what he wanted to say. "Professor Oak called my house a few months ago to ask me to do him a favour. I told him 'yes' but only on the condition that you are in on it too. Sooooo-"
"Get to the point!" Josh snapped.
"Okay! Okay! Tomorrow, we're going to his lab to receive our own Pokemon to help get a reference on one hundred and fifty species! Long story short, we're going to be Pokemon Trainers!"
Josh's mouth dropped as low as the bones would allow, "You're kidding..." Ash shook his head in confirmation and Josh was even more amazed, "You're not kidding..."
"You better get as much sleep as you can boys," told Delia, "You, without a doubt, have a big day tomorrow."
"No doubt indeed..." Josh mumbled to himself as he entered the car.
The engine was started the lights were on and then was driving away from the limelight of Viridian City. The next day, the two would become Pokemon Trainers, but for now, all they can do is wait; tomorrow, they will choose their Pokemon partner and embark on their epic quests.
