Okay, guys, for those of you who are reading JTC and wondering about Chris Brockner's extensive history, this is the fic for you! It is actually intended as an interlude to the first story "Dawn of Darkness." However, I decided it would be less confusing to take it out and make it into its own work.
The story takes place during the first story- and before Chris meets Mewtwo. ( Well, before he technically meets Mewtwo.
) Chris Brockner and Vulpix are heading to Viridian City to watch Ash Ketchum in the Kanto games. It's a short little story, as it is only six chapters. I'm going to post two of them today, two tommorow, and two the next day.
This will not interrupt the flow of "Dawn of Darkness." I will continue posting those at one chapter a day. As taking out this interlude has cut those down by six chapters, that one is only around 15 chapters now!
As five of the chapters have been posted, there are only ten more chapters to go in that story. Then, I will begin the next in a separate thread. (Just as I've done with this interlude.)
So, happy reading! I really think you'll like this interlude. The peeps over at SNf's fic board really liked it because of the battles.

Chapter 1 : REMEMBERING THE JOURNEY'S START
It was night time, Chris realized. Six o'clock was the exact time and darkness had already fallen thanks to the absence of Daylight Savings Time. Chris and Vulpix sat in the boarding room of the Pokemon Center in Viridian City and would stay there the night. Then, in the morning, Chris and Vulpix would move on to Indigo Plateau to watch the Pokemon League fall games!
Vulpix had been a stubborn catch. Chris looked across at his furry friend who was happily eating some Poke slop that Chris couldn't quite identify. The label had said, "Made from 100% Quality Ingredients." Yeah, the rats inside had been specially bred in order to provide the most nutrients...
That was nothing. Vulpix had survived on much worse because his parents had been killed when he was still a cub. Golbat had mercilessly torn the two senior Vulpix limb from limb with rabid fangs. The others of Vulpix's den - his sibblings - had made a run for it. Vulpix was too small to run, and had hid until it was all over. His attitude had been determined as a sour one as he grew. Being that Vulpix was only two, it had been easy for Chris to polish Vulpix jagged edges. Chris had made Vulpix a tad more agreeable, but the truth was that the fire fox had brought Chris as close to showing tears in public as he had ever come. He had dared Chris with fiery eyes and iron will to chase after him in the woods of New Bark. Chris had decided at first that capturing Vulpix to be his own Pokemon would be good experience. If Chris could tame a stubborn Vulpix, it would be good training experience. It looked like that wouldn't happen after a while, though. Vulpix had been too fast but Chris knew that if he gave up he would lose everything- including a first Pokemon from Professor Oak!
In those days, trainers from New Bark did not have the luxury of Professor Elm being a licensed Symposium and League Licensor for first Pokemon. One would have to travel across the woods to reach Pallette Town so they could see Professor Oak. Chris had rather fancied getting a Squirtle himself, which he later did. Only Chris's Squirtle did not come from the lab of the good Professor...
Chris was not willing to travel to Ecruteak City where his grandfather, Professor Morgan Brockner, worked with Chris's cousin Edward as a Pokemon Researcher. That didn't mean he didn't often call his grandfather for advice. Nor did he and his cousin/rival Sam hesitate in sending their Pokemon back and forth to their grandfather's lab.
What, then, finally allowed Chris to claim Vulpix as his own? The Golbat had come back to finish a job that they had left unfinished. Their rabid hides had, in some cases, changed to Crobat. This was the first time that Chris had seen this Johto-native Pokemon up close, and Chris hoped it would be the last after the fact. Vulpix had tried fighting on his own, but had nearly gotten bitten himself. Chris then remembered a TM that he had seen in an edition of the Pokemon Pal once. It had outlined how Fire Pokemon could learn the Flamethrower at any level. Chris had instructed Vulpix very quickly in the details after Vulpix had agreed to obey Chris's commands and come with the boy to be his first Pokemon. Vulpix had executed the move with what would have seemed to others as practiced ease.
Chris had gotten to Professor Oak's only to find that there were no Pokemon left except a Pikachu. Professor Oak said that he was saving that one for a special friend. He said something about destiny and the past.
Professor Oak had also said, "Good luck with Mewtwo, Christopher! Don't let your telekinetic powers go to your head!"
"Excuse me?" Chris had inquisited.
Oak, despite his age, let out a very young-sounding chuckle. "Let's just say that I have you confused with someone that I met in my youth. He and his future daughter helped myself and a very close friend defeat a very powerful foe."
"I don't understand!" Chris exclaimed. "Everything you're saying doesn't make sense. Are you okay, Professor?"
Oak gave a whimsical look. "I'm as okay as I've ever been. Just always trust your heart, okay? And just remember, sometimes friends can have misunderstandings. Sometimes they may even say things they don't mean. It's the same with most any Pokemon you'll ever own. Even with the ones that you might think actually are capable of hating you, they should still be treated with trust and love. Remember that, because someday it will be very important. Will you promise me that you'll remember that?"
"Sure thing Professor!" Chris had assured. Oak then awarded him with a Pokedex and made Vulpix a special Pokeball. Vulpix refused to get inside the ball. Chris said that he understood, but said that Vulpix would have to then submit to being on a leash. Vulpix did all that he could to state that he would not stray from Chris. Of course, he couldn't speak. So, it took Chris a little while to figure out what Vulpix was communicating.
Still, Chris sat he and realized that Vulpix had kept his promise with the exception of times when it became necessary for Vulpix to go off on his own. Chris had been leary at first, but once Chris caught his Squirtle in a remote pond in Veridian Forrest, that was all the leash Chris needed if Vulpix got out of line. A fast squirt and Vulpix would go right back to behaving. Of course, Squirtle was not always perfectly behaved himself... Until the day Chris had rescued Squirtle form near destruction at the hands of a very sneaky member of the Pikachu species. All of this occurred in the dark forrest of Viridian City. It had taken Chris a week to get out, after a Samurai had challenged him thinking he was from Pallet Town. After Chris and his new Pikachu- a prize that he had earned by using Vulpix to save Squirtle- beat down Samurai's pesky bugs with near unrivaled electric attacks. Before this, Chris had regretted his decision of not using Vulpix against Samurai, but Chris saw that Pikachu could easily make up in strength what Vulpix gained in his type advantage against bugs.
"For a beginner from Pallet, you are fairly skilled, young one," Samurai had said.
"Wha??? Pallett?" Chris had rolled the words around on his tongue. "Hell, no, I come from New Bark Town in Johto!"
Samurai had gone wide-eyed. "A Johtoite? Seriously? Why didn't you say so? Allow me to welcome you and teach you some of the ways of the ninja!"
