Hi people!!!
I was just wondering is anyone noticing a return of the popularity of pokémon?
I mean of course it has its loyal fanbase (and most of us are probably on this website :p).
Around where I live and people i know who live father a field are beginning to becom interested again, and this may be related to the release of HGSS.
An example of this is return can be found on facebook on this fanpage :

dont know how many of you are on facebook so meh, but its worth a look!

^has a point but even if Pokemon had left or become forgotten, 250,000 people on a facebook page means little.

I wasn't aware it had left.
QFT.

But at any rate, I do have to say it never really disappeared. Contrary to what Joseph Jay Tobin, et al. might think, Pokemon is not dead. Far from it, actually.

But yes, I suppose HGSS probably has brought about a surge in interest in Pokemon, particular in older fans who lost interest in the franchise.

There's a difference between being a fad, and being popular. To me, Pokemon is still and always will be popular. D:

I don't see the point of this. Pokemon has been, and always will be, popular for many years to come.

It's popularity never died in the first place.

The entire world might be obsessed with it anymore, but it's still extremely popular - what it was originally was just overkill. xD;

Within Japan the popularity may still be the same, but for people outside of Japan it is not as popular as it used to be, I think the orignal poster has a point, in saying that perhaps fans outside of Japan have gotten back into Pokemon.

It is true that I hadn't started playing again until the first announcements of G/S remakes had come out.

The fad ended in the early 2000s. However, popularity continues, and the franchise is the second-best selling Nintendo game franchise, behind Mario, of course.

Thank you!
Maybe i should have explained my original point a bit better :p
I myself am an example of this, as i lost interest in Pokemon for a few years, but over the last 6 months i have slowly been getting back into it, to the point where im going to spend £30 on SS which if someone had said i would do a year ago, i would said they were crazy :p
And for people who says it has always been popular, what i mean is its return to higher more general levels of popularity amongst the general people, while hardcore fans get to go yay!!

Ironic for some of us who are Pokemon fans it seems like we are the only person in that area who likes Pokemon.

I live in Australia, QLD and I don't think I have met many Pokemon fans. There's my cousin but he's not that big of a fan like me. (There's another cousin, since he stole my Pokemon Pearl I assume he still likes it), I seen one or two other people.
But maybe I just need to open my eyes more, there could be hundreds of Pokemon fans swarming around me and I wouldn't know

Well it seems pretty popular by whats going on here in bulbagarden, but I don't know anyone (but those on here) who like pokemon, so no one I know in person likes pokemon or anyone I see around liking it either, unless they hide it well. Everyone I know gave up when the major craze ended back in 2001 or so after the Kanto days.

...? Making return? Nau, it never left :D

Tell me one person who doesn't know 'pikachu'

You may have hit the nail on the head. The fad ended, but it is plain to see Pokemon is still big. I consider other franchises, and I see pretty much the same thing. If you mention Mario, people would know what it is, but do they slap it on everything there is? No. Once upon a time, they might have, and I wouldn't be surprised if they still do, but I never see it. In fact, Pokemon may be the only franchise I know of that still has at least a toy line here. I don't count Japan, because no fad ever dies there. Maybe we are a bit more like every other video game fandom out there, but the only time we get to shine is at releases like this. Whenever any other big name game releases, you can bet their fans come out of the woodwork, too. We have proven we have lasting power, and to some, we may already be a classic franchise the same as all the other Nintendo names. (To me, that won't happen until next year, when it turns 15. There's just something about that number that says we are classic) It would be foolish of me to believe that all things last forever, but we have already done more than what most franchises accomplish. Here we are, about to see a 5th incarnation of the series. No, we are not as strong as we used to be. But do we need that again? I say no.

I find the use of "we" woefully inappropriate.
