O.k. when was the first pokemon manga made? I am trying to track down a translated version / non-American comic format.

There are several Pokemon mangas. I presume you mean Adventures as that's the most popular one. You can easily buy one off of Amazon that is in the correct format and translated.

From what I can find on Wikipedia:
Pokemon Adventures- March 1997
The Electric Tale Of Pikachu - April 1997
Magical Pokemon Journey - July 1997

As I say, this is from wikipedia so I can't vouch for how reliable this is. Also don't get confused with volume release dates as it is quite confusing. This is when the mangas were first ever published, the first chapter that is.

Anakubo Kousaku's Pocket Monsters started its publication in the April 1996 issue of CoroCoro Comics. Pocket Monsters Special (the Japanese name for Pokemon Adventures) didn't start its publication until April 1997.
