I was just thinking, how awesome a Pokemon MMORPG would be. I would reckon that it would be similar to the games, just with people playin simultaneously.

Yeah, these topics pop up all the time. I'm sure Nintendo knows people want a Pokemon MMO. It's got to be handled delicately, in my opinion, because there has to be that separation form the portable games, so that people keep buying them. It also has to be designed to protect kids from obscenity... which most MMOs already do. Then it's got balancing issues to deal with (Something to keep bully trainers from hanging out in front of pallet town and blacking out all new trainers for example; along with pokemon rarity and legendaries).

I can see how people say Pokemon doesn't lend itself well to be an MMO, which is true in a way as Pokemon is generally more a 1 on 1 experience in design. Adding in multiplayer adds a lot of issues to think about... but I think an online game would work, one way or another.

Personally, I had wanted to turn the Mysterious Dungeon universe into an MMO (but yeah, it would remove key things that would make it a Mysterious Dungeon game, but I think that could work itself out well)

I think it would be really cool, and when I made my promise to never play another MMORPG, I made Pokémon the only exception. The only problem is, it would never be executed right. It would never feel right, as the vast majority of players would either be ten, or completely hardcore and not any fun. Also, they'd have trouble protecting children, as they'd be a large proportion of the players. They would most likely remove practically any communication features, making things pretty individual-based.

But on an idealistic note, I think it would be awesome if Pokémon weren't random encounters but instead actually visible on the terrain, and some are much rarer than others (not unlike MMORPG weapons and items) so that not everyone can have every Pokémon they like if they know where to look, and the legendary Pokémon could either be boss-like characters, or Pokémon which there are only one of.

In addition, they should, unlike the games, periodically tweak balance to keep certain Pokémon from dominating or being useless. Otherwise, I think it should function similar to the games, except in real time with a "cooldown" bar for each Pokémon that must refill before using another move, and goes faster the higher the Speed stat. And also, trainers should be able to take damage from wild Pokémon if and only if they have no Pokémon out, and instead of dying they just black out and find themselves at the nearest Pokémon city, with some of their money gone.

With all that together, Pokémon could make a good MMORPG, but in reality, it won't. If Nintendo doesn't ruin it, the players will.

I don't see much need for a Pokemon MMO, to tell the truth. The games thus far have been able to provide a very fun single player experience, while at the same time, provide great multiplayer functions.

I don't know about that. An MMORPG would definitely be less repetitive than the foolishly slow levelling up of the main series. And it would provide a more interactive multiplayer experience. More emphasis on item collection, exploration, and friends (everyone need moar of those), and less emphasis on BATTLE BATTLE BATTLE OVER AND OVER AGAIN SO YOU CAN LEVEL UP TO 100 AND HAVE A MINIMAL CHANCE ON THE VIRTUALLY NONEXISTENT COMPETITIVE PLAY CIRCUIT.

I would totally go for a pokemon mmo. and mostly because of the potential interaction between your pokemon (if its made something like what you see on anime >.>)

Pokedev.org is a blog that reviews all the fan-made MMOs out there. I think that might be as good as we'll get and it might be better than we would get, hypothetically. Currently there, according to Pokedex, 6 running MMOs, one of which is a Mystery Dungeon setting.

I would love if Nintendo did create an MMO. Possibly with all of Japan playable, though there are probably four or five more regions to fill it out. Then you could travel the whole region and have more options. I'd definitely pay to play it, for a while at least.

Ditto, A Pokemmorpg done right would be amazing and bring a bunch of serious players into the game again.

I wouldn't be surprised if a few people over at Game Freak already have something like a mmorpg in the works (even if one will never come out.)

man this was what i was talking about yesterday with my boyfriend, no joke. i'd love it if they came out with one or even gave a copany the rights to make one. i mean you see how popular mmos are like WOW and the like, so i'm sure they'd make it. and hopefully it wouldn't get released for just the wii, because pcs are made for mmos.
i also thought it could be neat if maybe you got to a certain level of greatness and your "team" of pokemon could temporarily become one of the elite that other players get to face.
and i always like doing side quests in games and thats definitely something mmos are good for, and i'm sure doing side quests in pokemon mmos could lead to getting you team souped up.

LOL!! XD

But yeah, I too would like to see a cool Pokemom MMO, sounds like it would be fun!! ^_^

PC gaming as a whole isn't big in Japan at all, so the chances of a Pokemon MMO coming out is pretty much non-existent.

There's no reason they couldn't do that for the main RPGs.

I really don't think Pokemon would be a great MMO unless they drastically altered how the game plays. I think the game would benefit more from some kind of xbox live friends list and chat options that allow better communication without having to go to a separate area like the wifi plaza or cable club.

a pokemon MMO would be amazing!
and like they could have a tournament held a bunch for people who gather 8 badges, or more...

(like if it was GS type stuff they could have an 8 badge pokemon league and a 16 badge one)

to find out who the best players are

Speaking of Pokemon MMOs, I'm trying to develop one for the iPhone and Android phones. Only problem is that right now the dev team consists of me. I've started a blog to try and garner interest in the project: www.mobilepokedex.blogspot.com

If you guys have any questions about the game I would be more than happy to answer them. I'm just trying to get people interested right now.
