...does this mean Pokémon has finally taken Mario's spot?

Pretty amazing to see a game like this sell so well so fast.

Did Platinum reach a million faster than Yellow, Crystal and Emerald?

In overall game sales? No. Pokémon still has a way to go to beat Mario in total sales. Currently, the Mario franchise is at 200 million, while Pokémon is at 180 million. As for the title of fastest selling DS game, D/P overtook New Super Mario Brothers, and now Platinum has the title of fastest selling DS game ever.

Whoa. That was fast. It's really cool to see that people are still eagerly awaiting new Pokemon games. (I don't blame them, Platinum looks bloody awesome)

Wow. Over a million in 3 days. I hope it doesnt have shortages.

Pokemon always seems to top the charts for at least a while, unless a stronger title comes along.

To answer Scott85's question:

1st week sales from Famitsu of past 3rd Pokemon versions.

Pokemon Yellow Edition: Special Pikachu Edition: 851,091
Pokemon Crystal: 707,580
Pokemon Emerald: 643,987

So, Platinum beats out Yellow, which was previously the fastest selling 3rd version.

It just goes to show that a game need not be needed for its fans to find it totally awsome.

All I can say is congratulations on beating 1 million in a week.

So much for Gamefreak running out of ideas, eh? :p

Hey. We are the Pokefandom. Put a game out and we`ll eat it up, regardless of what`s on it. Sure they might loose some fans, but they`ll definitely gain even more.

I say if they keep putting out games, regardless if they are remakes and such, Pokemon will never die.

Of course, every kid and their grandmother's dog owning a DS and wanting some replayabiltiy out of the Pokemon franchise by now may help too. I don't have immediate statistics, but wasn't there an statistic that showed a decrease in sales of the DS, probably due to the fact that the market is already heavily saturated?

Soaking up Platinum by the mine-full isn't so hard with a readied user base.

Nor is it hard when it has been two years since the last Game Freak game was released. That was obviously not done to flesh out Platinum as much as possible; it was done to make the fans all the more eager to shell out cash on a new game, regardless of its content.

Case in point: Crystal was released a year after Gold and Silver, while Emerald was released eight months after FireRed and LeafGreen. Yellow, however, was released two years and a half after Red and Green (which was less than two years after Blue, but that game had had a limited release at the time). The fact that Platinum's first-week sales are higher than Yellow's is explained by the general DS sale patterns: Games are sold faster around their release date.

Heavens forbid they loose any fans. What will those fans do once they are loosed?

If Pokemon took over mario i would be really happy!

Pokemon will always have a place in my heart..
