Pokémon Puzzle League coming to VC Monday: Nintendo 64 game will cost 1,000 Wii points

Pokémon Puzzle League, a Nintendo 64 game only released in North America and Europe, will be available on the Wii Shop channel as a Virtual Console title beginning Monday.

I'm kinda surprised the game made it, given some of the possible liscesing issues involved and the large filesize (PPL is the only N64 game to feature full-screen video).

I wonder if there's going to be new features, like the Wii version of Snap.

I would assume not. At best, the video has been recompressed (like some of the TG-16 CD games) using modern codecs to fit in a smaller space.

That wasn't actually a new feature - the original game had the opportunity to transfer pictures as well. In the VC game, the pictures are just transferred to the Wii Message board rather than to a sticker printing machine.

I would have expect/wanted Tetris Attack on the VC instead, but Nintendo doesn't have the license for the tetris name anymore :(

It's an addictive game, but now I'd have to slog through the Pokémon anime if I want to play this game :\

Yeah, they could have put Tetris Attack on there instead (or Panel de Pon, which is already out on the Japanese VC), but the fact that this version has the Pokemon name attached to it means that it'll sell more.

Yay! Pokemon Puzzle League! ^_^

I could watch the beginning intro scene over and over, given the fact it has Ash in it. <3<3<3<3

Anyway, this is one of my favorite games on the N64. Despite the fact that I actually own it, I'm going to download it anyway. Hehe. XD

The only thing is, I need to buy a new Wii Points card. Looks like I'll have to ask my mom to buy it. XD

I don't have a Nintendo Wii but Pokemon Puzzle League was one of my favorite games because it is so addictive. This was one game that I had back when I actually had a N64 but there was a power supply problem with mine and it would only work for a certain period of time before freezing. The fact that the character voices were featured in that game was just too cool not only that it was also great to see that the anime versions were used for the gym leaders and elite four members.

Surely you could buy it yourself from a game store for 20 bucks.

Or better yet, you could use a credit card and get Wii points without leaving home.

As for me, I'm personally waiting for Pokémon Ranch and Earthbound to be released before I use my Wii Point card.

Take away the Pokemon dressing and they're exactly the same game - in fact, Puzzle League has even more options available with a cylindrical 3D puzzle mode debuting in the game - seems more wise to me to simply throw this out there. I'm sure it'll get more people attracted to it for the fact it's Pokemon than it'll turn people away.

They should totally put PdP on the American VC.

I play that game ALL the time on my SNES emulator. Cute? Yes. But the art design is AWESOME and Americans could finally learn exactly where Lip's Stick in SSB comes from.

Horrible thought here--and JUST a thought, before you all overreact...

What if they rerecord it with the new cast?
I really don't think Pokemon USA would go through all that trouble....

I mean, sure Pokemon USA must've had something to do with PPL being released on the VC, since it's a Pokemon game and everything. But still, this is mainly Nintendo we're talking about here. And I really don't think they would go so far as to change a Pokemon game from the way it used to be (simply because Pokemon USA is happy with their new/current voice cast).

Also, those contracts are up by now, anyway. So there's absolutely no reason why they couldn't keep the original voices in this game. And for the record, Maddie has mentioned to us that the original cast actually has 4Kids' permission to work on the show, in the event that Pokemon USA would ever approach them at some point.

So yeah, since 4Kids wouldn't have any problems with allowing that to happen (hypothetically), then I don't think Nintendo would have problems with using the original cast in this game either.

As for Pokemon USA, on the other hand, I have no idea what their opinions or beliefs on Pokemon Puzzle League could be right now. But I would really hate to believe that they would go so far as to change the voices in this wonderful game. I mean, that would be downright cruel to all the people who were involved in making this game. =(

Come to think of it, given that this game uses anime characters, the hypothetical idea of Pokemon USA recasting the voices for this game....to me, that would be almost as if they had went back and redubbed all of Season one and Season two/Orange Islands. *shudders at the thought*

Anyway, I think the real question is, would this make new fans of the Pokemon anime (those who started watching around D/P or D/P Battle Dimension) very confused, if they download this game and find the voices to be different? I think it would make people confused, that's for sure.

I've seen an annoyingly large amount of bitching on various forums about how much people hate Nintendo for forcing them to buy a stupid, childish Pokemon game rather than a super-macho Baby Yoshi game or a butch, manly fairy game, with some saying they'll just wait until Nintendo puts up Tetris Attack. It's the same game, people!:banghead:

But yeah, got this baby on cart already. But those of you who on't own this game in any shape or form already, go download it this instant. It's the best puzzle game ever.

Lisa, if they did change the voices (which it's confirmed they didn't) it's not like it'd affect the gameplay itself, y'know, the part people actually care about usually when playing puzzle games.

Yes, I know they didn't change the voices.

I was just replying to Blackjack's post, mostly saying that we shouldn't have to worry about Nintendo doing something like that.

Sheesh, Habunake. Don't you think that was rather harsh? Seriously, you're always trying to make me feel bad.... :-(

What's the point in posting this? All it's going to do is wind up with yet another stupid VA flamewar.

They wouldn't need to change the VAs as they were legally working on the game originally and were fully paid for their work. Any sale of the game after that is no different to repeats of the original series.
