Pokemon Quest

Many years ago, the Pokemon world wasn't the same as you know it today...it was a wild land; with forests, mountains, deserts, and other unexplored lands. But the centerpiece of the land, as it were, was the Aiiro Kingdom, located in the east of the realm. It was a very prosperous kingdom, guided under the kind and just rule of King Lance.
Like any good ruler, Lance had a wide array of trusted advisors, but none was like Shukun, an adventurer from Pallet Village; a small town not far from Indigo City. Shukun had explored all around the world, and had even ventured into the lands of mystical creatures. After Shukun returned from his latest adventure to the land of the arcane a year ago, Lance requested that Shukun enter his service, so that he could learn more about the mystical creatures that lived in these realms. Shukun accepted, on condition that he be allowed to spend some time with his wife, Delia, and his son, Ash; for part of the year. Lance understood how important family was to Shukun, and granted his request.
Now, a great dragon called Kurayami has arisen in the realm of the arcane; and his dark magic could even be felt in the human realm--Pokemon began going wild, and monsters began appearing in the human world. Worried that Kurayami could breach the gate between the two worlds and destroy them both, Lance alerted some of his best knights to try and slay Kurayami, but none returned.
Our story focuses on Shukun's son, Ash; and how his innate skills in both weaponry and magic helped save two worlds and bring peace back to them both.
The adventure begins now...
Prologue: A Call from the Castle
A young boy with messy black hair watched from a bush as a flock of Pidgeys descended to the ground, intent on finding their dinner for the evening. He smiled--if he was successful on this hunt, it would be the first time in a while he and Delia would have fresh Pidgey meat for dinner.
"Pika?" chirped the tiny yellow mouse creature that was sitting on the boy's shoulder.
"Not yet, Pikachu." the boy cautioned as he readied an arrow. "Wait until I've made my shot." With that, the arrow went flying into the Pidgey flock, scattering them in all directions. Pikachu obediently hopped off his master's shoulder and dragged a lifeless Pidgey into the bush. The boy carefully deposited the Pidgey carcass into a bag, gathered his supplies, and started off towards a simple stone house that was just down the hill. Pikachu followed along, being extra careful to not lose the sight of the brown form of his master in the dim light of the setting sun.
After reaching the bottom of the hill and strolling along the dirt path of Pallet Village for a while, the boy found the path that lead to his own stone house and knocked on the door. "Mom! I'm home!" he called.
The door opened, revealing a young brown haired woman on the stoop. "Ash! Welcome back!" she smiled as she brushed bread crumbs from the apron under her blue skirt. "Did you catch anything for dinner?" she asked as Ash hung up his bow by the fireplace.
"Yeah!" Ash smiled as he set to work skinning the Pidgey he'd caught. "I think this Pidgey's got enough meat on it for the two of us and Pikachu to have some!" Pikachu lips his lips at the thought of roast Pidgey--when Shukun was not at Aiiro Castle serving the king, he'd bring home meat every night...something he enjoyed about as much as his human companions did. He watched as Delia carefully inserted the Pidgey carcass--now fully de-feathered and cleaned--onto a spit hanging over the fireplace.
"Ash? Could you watch the meat while I go get some vegetables from the cellar?" Delia asked as she descended down the stairs.
"Sure!" Ash replied as he turned the spit. As he watched the flames flicker in the fireplace, he noticed an ornately decorated envelope decorated in the red, blue and yellow of the royal stationary. A letter from Dad? he thought as he abandoned the meat long enough to retrieve the letter from the kitchen table, then quickly turned the meat as he carefully opened the envelope--anything with the royal colors on it was probably important.
"Pikapi? Pika pi chu?" Pikachu asked as he desprately tried to get a look at the paper in Ash's hands.
"Be patient..." Ash assured Pikachu as he unfolded the paper in his hands. "Here we go...it says:
Dear Ash,
Warmest greetings to you and your mother from Aiiro Castle. Things have been getting rather busy here as of late--Princess Clair has decreed a tournament is to be held in a few days, and that means all of the world's best knights will be here with their Pokemon. I know you've been getting skilled with both your sword and battling with Pikachu, so if you want to come and watch, that would be wonderful.
As for His Majesty...he had been quite worried about the Gate of Two Worlds and Kurayami for the better part of a week, but after I showed the court wizard how to cast a seal on it, the Gate's activity has calmed down--I hope that that seal will hold for a long time.
We had a caravan of traders from the western desert visit us yesterday...after doing some trading with them, one of their best summoners proceeded to entertain His Majesty with a most interesting magic show.
You see, summoners don't cast spells like the mages here do...rather then calling the incantations for a spell, they use enchanted whistles! These tiny flutes are supposedly able to be heard by mythical beings and Legendary Pokemon--when the summoner plays a song the summoned creature is pleased with, it will enter into this world and do the summoner's bidding. The summoner that came to visit us summoned the beautiful phoenix, Moltres, and performed a few tricks with her. Judging from how tame Moltres was around the summoner, you would've thought she was one of the summoner's own Pokemon.
It's getting late, so I will have to close for tonight. I hope to see you soon.
"I see you found Dad's letter." Delia smiled as she set some onions, mushrooms, and carrots on the table. "What did it say?
"Dad says that Princess Clair has decreed for a tournament to be held soon..." Ash began as he turned the meat again. "and he thinks I could compete."
"I'm not sure about competing, much less going to a tournament..." Delia was unsure. "Even with that seal over the Gate of Two Worlds, Pokemon are still going wild and there are still monsters about..."
"Relax, I bet I can keep them at bay!" Ash replied as he eased the cooked meat onto a platter, allowing Delia to put some onions and mushrooms into a pot over the fireplace.
"I know you can, it's just..." and Delia began to tear up. "I don't want to lose you. Some of the monsters they use in the tournaments are very strong, and you could be seriously hurt, or worse, killed."
"I understand, Mom." Ash replied. He knew that he could fight well with both weapons and magic, but Delia had a point--he didn't want to get in over his head and fight a monster much stronger than he was. His thoughts were interrupted by the tell-tale aroma of onions and mushrooms. "Oh! These are ready!" he called.
"All right, go wash up for dinner." Delia replied as she ladled the onions and mushrooms around the roasted Pidgey meat, unaware of the adventure that was soon to change her son's life.
The next morning...
Ash lay out under the shade of a tree, carving a whistle out of wood. Pikachu was nearby, gathering the wood shavings into a neat pile. He had thought about what his father had told him about the magical whistles desert summoners used--so now he was attempting to make one of his own. If he ever did meet a summoner, he could show it off and use it to practice summoning. If he couldn't summon with it, he'd at least be able to play it for dances and parties.
After carving a mouthpiece and drilling some fingerholes, Ash smiled as he admired his handiwork. "Let's see how this sounds." he told Pikachu. With that, he covered all the fingerholes and gently blew into the tiny instrument, making a wavery sounding note come out.
"Pika!" Pikachu winced at the shaky sounding note. Ash understood and blw a bit harer, making the note come out clean. Before long, he had figured out a tune he had often heard at parties--"Clair's Reel".
Some applause startled Ash from his song, so he looked up to see the village courier standing before him. "Uh, good morning, sir." he started.
"Good morning, Sir Ash..." the courier replied as he handed Ash another envelope with the royal stationary on it. "His Majesty wishes to see you."
Ash shakily took the envelope from the courier's hand in awe and surprise--what did King Lance want from him, anyway?
