In the games all Pokemon come from eggs but I don't think it'd be like that if Pokemon were real. What do you guys think?

That make sense to me, especially with OBVIOUS mamalians (Miltank, anyone?), hanging out among the Pokémon Crowd.

One could theorize that they are simply "covering" the S-act, possibly due to american culture and the unbelieably high fear of anythign sex-related being told to children that permeate it. Though the games were designed in Japan, they may have considered the american market while designing.

Or else pokémon reproducing by non-eggs means was considered not-PC in a kids game even in Japan. Which is not impossible, I suppose.

I think that some of them reproduce "the good old-fashioned way". See Kangaskhan for example: it gives birth to live young. The more reptilian of the Pokémon species probably do lay eggs, which then hatch. And I believe that Lugia also gives birth to live young as well. Some might reproduce asexually.

Coudl Ditto reproduce by splitting in two, like cells?

Why they made all of them hatch from eggs always seemed obvious to me, it's easy to put that into the games.

Ditto could reproduce asexually. In our world jellyfish can do this, so why not Tentacool and Tentacruel? Or even Starmie and Staryu?

Quite possibly.

(Side note : am I the only one who fidn Ditto reminsicent of the Shoggoths in the Chtuluhu mythos?)

They do, but they're described as resembling tar, which is black. Ditto is a cute happy pink amoeba-like thing. I find it vaguely reminiscent of sentient Silly Putty.

Yeah, I can't imagine all of them having eggs, either. I think the whole egg thing has its roots in tamagotchi pets, but I could be mistaken.

Yeah, that's why I said "Ditto's evil cousin".

Well, consider that all sexually produced creatures begin life in eggs. Maybe they've all evolved to make these eggs external, that way they can still battle and train without having to worry about the Pokemon inside of them. Maybe it has to do with the interbreeding of species. Or maybe there are communal nests or something similar.

That actually sounds like a reasonable explanation...

Exactly. It's the easiest way to get your Pokemon babies and to raise them. It would probably take too much time with them doing something else...

Red: NURSE JOY! How is she doing? Is the baby crowning?
Joy: Just one second. We have to pull the baby out. Please press A and B repeatedly, but not at the same time, to pull the baby out.
Red: ABABABAAAA OOPS!
Joy: The baby died, and your female Dunsparce will never be able to have babies again.

Yeah, it's just easier to have them all come out in eggs, and then walk around for them to hatch.

*giggle*

But like said earlier, it's just easier for the games... and easier than trying to explain the birds 'n the bees to the kiddies.

In real life, every Pokemon would have to have their own way of reproducing. Pokemon like Onix, Wailmer, Magnmite, etc. could not be hatched. Bug and fish Pokemon would likely lay numerous of eggs like how they really do it but it really is mind boggling to think about the rest.

In real life, they would breed in the same ways that their real-life counterparts would breed. i.e Magikarp and Goldeen would spawn thousands of small eggs which hatch into fry and develop into adult Magikarp and Goldeen.

The real reason why all Pokémon have eggs instead is that it greatly simplifies gameplay coding. It's kinda hard to program pregnancy, and they're certainly not going to program a live birth (unless you want a Harvest moon-like scenario and have the baby magically appear.)

Pokémon is generally a kid’s game, right? What parent wants their young kid knowing about sex and the like before they're... well, old enough (Personally, I wouldn't mind, but that’s just me).
When you think about it though, there are some Pokémon that simply couldn't reproduce, like Magnemite, and lets not forget all those "One gender only"-Pokémon.

They should just make... I don't know, a 15+/mature Pokémon game. One that’s... got darker and more realistic themes I guess. That would actually be quite awesome now I think about it... xD
