Pokemon+RPG plotline=?

For years one of my biggest dreams was to have a JRPG style story set in the Pokeworld--when the movie 8 pictures of Ash as a mage appeared, I had a field day with ideas.

But every idea I tried just went nowhere--so what can I do to make it work?

Uh...Pokemon is a JRPG, thus I assume it would be obvious that it would have a "JRPG story" by default.

If you mean "JRPG story" in the swords/sorcery/steampunk/etc. sense...I dunno. Any actual concrete ideas beyond "there's magic and stuff"?

I think this might be part of the problem, at least if you're dead set on this as a plot point: Macguffins exist to justify a plot conflict, not their own existence. After all, why do you care that Emperor Bad McNasty, Esq. has the Dark Blood Crystal of Bad Evil Pain? Generally, you care because Good McNiceguy cares and you're supposed to not like Emperor Bad McNasty, Esq. but you need a pretense for the former to beat up the latter. It's also an easy way for games to justify why the hero has to go spelunking through fire/water/forest/sky/light/dark dungeons.

What about Zelda/Final Fantasy do you find attractive? What elements of those game worlds do you think would make for a good setting/story?

The main reason I want to pattern the story after a Zelda/Final Fantasy game is because there are vast worlds to explore and so much to do.

I already started writing something like this. Pokémon plus RPG equals Pokémon: the RPG, where animé characters are based on JRPG archetypes and Mewtwo plays unwitting hero! Of course, I need to flesh the idea out more.

You should also make sure that it is in line with many JRPGs. Everything from Final Fantasy to Dragon Quest to even Mother should be studied before writing such a fic.

I have done this to a degree, and so far it is a mix of Zelda/classic Final Fantasy with a dash of Mother (the Eight Melodies will be making an appearance)
