Episode:
1: "Alola!"

“Alola, a region made up of several different islands, chock full of rare Pokémon that hadn’t been seen anywhere else. Pokémon are mysterious and wonderful creatures, and they can be found all over. In the grass, in the caves, in the sky and sea… Here in Alola, people love their Pokémon friends, and they depend on them too, living in perfect harmony. Some of them even battle with their friends, who are called Pokémon Trainers!”

“Caw!!” a Pikipek cries, as it flies over an isolated house.

On the house’s side porch, a woman is slipping some steaming coffee, “Of course, our first morning in Alola would be treated with such a beautiful sunrise.” She just spent a moment looking at the sun filled sky, before looking to hers left where she sees hers Meowth scratches behind its ear with one arm. She smiles, “Meowth, why don’t you go and wake up my sleepy son before he misses it.

“Meow!” Meowth responses, before sprinting on all four back inside the house.

***

Meowth enters a room which features a TV screen with a Wii U console, a desk bare except for a PC, two boxes labeled “Elio’s”, and a large bed with a blanket covered figure laid still on it.

Meowth runs up to the side of the bed, “Meow! Meow!” No reaction from the motionless figure. Meowth jumps up to part of the blanket hanging off the bed. After couple seconds of holding onto the corner of the bed, Meowth, with part of the blanket, falls down off the bed, revealing a pair of bare feet beneath a Poké Ball pattern pajama pants. Meowth, seating on the floor, looks back up, clearly angry, “Meow!”

All of the suddenly, Meowth jumps up and lands on the head of the bed, clearly hitting the figure beneath the blanket, causing a scream to echo through the house.

1: “Alola!”

Selene, a young, brunette girl in a tied flower patterned pastel shirt and green shorts, steps out hers house stretching hers arms high before relaxing them, “I don’t believe today had finally came.”

All of a sudden, a loud scream is heard from a house from the other side of a nearby hill. Selene just turns her head to the side.

***

Meowth’s claws pop out of both of its paws before striking repeatedly with them. Suddenly the tape on top of four boxes, in the living room, breaks apart.

The woman bends down to Meowth, “Well done, Meowth.” She starts scratches the top of Meowth’s head, “You’re always helpful.”

“Meow!” Meowth purring happily.

“I guess you right, mom,” Elio, a blue-hair boy wearing a blue-white striped shirt, black shorts with red highlights, steps out from a backroom, as he pulls on his black hat with an abstract Poké Ball design and a blue brim. “I should’ve unpacked my alarm clock last night, but it was so late when we got here.”

“Yeah, but there was such a beautiful full moon,” Elio’s mom smiles, before she stands up. “But nonetheless, remembers Elio, you promised to meet up with Professor Kukui.”

“I know mom, and I’m wide…” Elio starts, but is interrupted by a loud yawn. “Awake.”

“Indeed,” Elio’s mom crosses hers arms. At that moment a knocking at their front door is heard, causing her to spin around “Oh that must be Professor Kukui now.” She hurries to the front, stopping to speak to herself, “I hope I get this right. Alola, alola…” She then pulls the door open in one quick motion, and says with hers eyes close and one arm out, “Alola, Professor Kukui.”

“Alola…”

Elio’s mom opens hers eyes to see Hau, to hers surprised.

“But as you can see, I’m not Professor Kukui,” Hau responds.

“Oh, I’m sorry,” Elio’s mom states, as Elio walks over.

“That okay,” Hau smiles and holds his hands behind his head. “Professor Kukui is busy so he asked me to show Elio around and bring him to the Professor. My name’s Hau.”

“Nice to meet you, Hau,” Elio’s mom says before holds out an arm to hers son. “And this is Elio.”

“Hello…” Elio starts.

“It not hello, Elio,” his mom interrupts. “Here, its alola.”

“Actually, it’s…” Hau waves both hands through the air, “Alola.”

“Ah,” Elio’s mom mimics Hau’s movement, “Alola.”

Hau repeats himself, “Alola.”

Elio’s mom repeats herself, “Alola.”

Hau once again repeats himself, “Alola.”

Elio, with one sweat drop, waves his hands through the air, “Alola…”

***

In a short time, Hau is leading Elio away from his house.

“Professor Kukui is in Iki Town, which isn’t too far from here,” Hau explains as Elio looks around, noticing a Pikipek in a tree and a Yungoos peek out from behind a brush before sneaking back. “So where you from?”

“Oh,” Elio’s attention is swayed back to his new friend. “I’m from Kanto.”

“Hau!”

Elio and Hau stop to see Selene running up to them, waving one hand.

“Alola, Selene” Hau waves both hands, not noticing Elio’s half grin.

“Alola,” Selene waves hers arms, after couple seconds of catching hers breathe. She then turns to Elio. “So this must be the new guy on the island.”

“Hi… I mean, Alola,” Elio waves his arms.

“Selene, this Elio, I’m taking him to see Professor Kukui,” Hau explains. “Are you coming to see Professor Kukui too?”

“Of course,” Selene responds, with a smile. “I’m so excited, what with the festival coming.”

“Festival?” Elio turns his head slightly.

“Alola there!”

The three newly acquainted friends look up the hill they’re at the bottom of to see Iki Town’s sign and Professor Kukui waves his arms at them. The three of them quickly runs up to him.

“Alola!” the kids respond, with Elio a second behind.

“Elio, I’m glad to see you had arrived in Alola safely, I’m just sorry that I wasn’t able to greet you at home,” Professor Kukui says.

“That’s okay, Professor, I understand you’re very busy,” Elio scratches the back of his head.

“I’m not sure about the ‘very’ part,” Professor Kukui smiles before noticing Selene with the group. “And Selene, I’m happy you tagged along.”

“I won’t miss today, or tomorrow, for the world,” Selene explains.

“Glad to hear it,” Professor Kukui smiles before looks away and slightly scratches the side of his face. “Unfortunately today is a rare ‘very’ busy day. I still have a few things to do, including finding my assistant.”

“Lillie!” Hau quickly steps in front of Professor Kukui. “Lillie’s here too?”

“Huh, yeah, but she said she wants to look around and I hadn’t seen her since,” Professor Kukui explains.

“Well, we can go and find her for you, Professor,” Hau volunteers, unaware of Elio and Selene exchanging glances.

“Really? Wow, thanks,” Professor Kukui’s smile returns. “Someone said they saw her going to the Mahalo Trail, so you might want to try and look there.”

“Yes, Professor,” Hau salutes. “And don’t worry, we’ll find her.”

“I have no doubt.”

***

Within a short time, the three friends are making their way through the Mahalo Trail, north of Iki Town.

After a few seconds of silence, Hau turns around to face his friends, without stop walking, “Hey, I-I’m sorry for volunteering you guys without asking first.”

Selene smiles, “Its fine, besides I would like to meet Professor Kukui’s assistant. Is she’s nice?”

Hau spins around, grabs his hands, and speaks with stars in his eyes, “She’s nice, cute, with a voice that echo the sweet lullaby of a Jigglypuff.” The stars quickly disappear from his eyes, as Selene grins. “Not that I’ve notice or anything.”

“Anyway, I don’t mind either, and it gives me an excuse to see more of Alola,” Elio explains.

“Oh yeah, I heard you from Kanto,” Selene remembers. “Is it true about the Gym Leader Challenge?”

“Mhm, a lot of trainers travel around Kanto, collecting eight gym badges and then challenge the Pokémon League,” Elio explains.

“That sound really amazing,” Selene exclaims, before giving off a thinking look. “And it kinda sounds similar to the Island Challenge.”

“Island Challenge?” Elio asks.

Hau spins back around to face his friends, “The Island Challenge is a rite of passage where trainers, upon turning eleven, can travel across the four islands and take on Trial Captains.”

“Trial Captains, huh, it surely sounds interesting,” Elio starts to think, which Selene notices.

“Nebby!”

The three of them stops, with Selene says, “What that?”

Hau partly turns around, “It’s Lillie’s voice.”

The friends start dashing through the trail until they see Lillie in a clearing, looking around and calling out “Nebby! Nebby!”

Hau leads his friends to Lillie, “Alola, Lillie!”

“Hau?” Lillie seems surprised, than notices his friends.

“Lillie, this is Selene, and Elio, he just moved to Alola,” Hau explains.

“Alola,” Selene and Elio waves their arms, with Elio again a second behind.

“Hum, Lillie, exactly what are you doing out here?” Hau rubs the back of his head.

“I’m searching for Nebby, we were separated a few moments ago,” Lillie explains.

“Is Nebby your Pokémon partner?” Selene asks.

“Oh, no I’m not a trainer,” Lillie waves a hand back and forth. “Besides I dislike Pokémon battles. Nebby is simply my friend.”

The entire time his friends are talking, Elio notices an old plank bridge in the distance and manages to recognize a flock of Spearow attacking something on the bridge. Suddenly Elio runs away.

“Elio?” Selene asks, before she, Hau, and Lillie follow him.

As soon as they reach the bridge, they see what the Spearow are attacking: Nebby.

“Nebby!” Lillie cries out.

Without hesitation, Elio grabs a small branch off the ground and runs across the bridge. Elio makes it halfway across the bridge, when he starts swinging the branch, forcing the Spearow away from the crowding Nebby. Elio stands over Nebby and keeps on swinging, when one of the Spearow manages to grabs the branch with its beak and pulls it away from Elio.

“Craw!” the Spearow cries, as the branch drops down the ravine and the entire flock doves at the bridge.

Elio crowds over Nebby, shielding it from the attacking Spearow.

“Nebby!” Lillie is about to run onto the bridge, with Selene grabs hers arm.

“Wait, that bridge is too weak now,” Selene warns as the bridge is shown waving slightly.

The Spearow are continuing their endless attacking, as Nebby starts to glow slowly.

But all of a sudden the bridge gives out, collapsing under its two occupants. Then Elio, with Nebby in his arms, start to fall down the ravine.

“NO!!!” Lillie cries out.

“Elio!!!” Hau and Selene yell.

At that moment, a flash of light blink out in the sky, before Tapu Koko flies down, spins around to knock away the flock of Spearow and then dive bombs at the falling Elio and Nebby.

Taken aback, Hau is about to look over the edge of the cliff, when suddenly, Tapu Koko, with Elio and Nebby in its arms fly out of the ravine.

The three on the ground watches as Tapu Koko slowly lowers in front of them, releasing Elio on the ground. Elio, Nebby still in his arms, turns around to look at Tapu Koko, who simply hovers before them, taking a look at Elio, Hau, and Selene. Then Tapu Koko flies like a missile into the sky and disappear.

“Pew,” Nebby jumps out of Elio’s arms, causing Elio to notice something shimmering on the ground.

Nebby bounces over to Lillie, who puts hers hands on hers hips, “Nebby, do you realized what you had done. You were reckless and irresponsible.”

“Pew…” Nebby sadly says.

Lillie bends down to Nebby, and gently pats it on the head, “I understand how you feel, Nebby. But you must be patience, I’m sure you’ll find what you searching for.”

“Pew,” Nebby responds, happily.

Elio bends down and picks a sparkling stone with diamond-like markings on it. Selene and Hau then pick up similar stones, and all cast questioning expressions.

***

The group is making it back through Mahalo Trail, with Nebby snuggling comfortably in Lillie’s bag.

Lillie looks down at Nebby, “I can’t say thanks enough.”

“Oh, it was nothing,” Hau blushes as he slightly waves a hand.

“Exactly what did you do?” Selene’s comment stops Hau cold for a moment.

“But what kind of Pokémon was that?” Elio asks.

“I almost forgot, you’re new in Alola, so you don’t know about Tapu Koko,” Selene realizes.

“Tapu Koko?”

“Alola is made up of four islands, Melemele, Akala, Ula’ula, and Poni,” Lillie explains. “And each island has a guardian deity that protect their respectively island. Tapu Koko is the guardian deity of Melemele Island.”

“Every since I was little, I wanted to meet a guardian deity,” Selene admits, before smiles at the guys. “I’m glad I decided to come with you.”

“It certainly was an eventful day,” Hau notes. “Some first day in Alola, huh Elio?”

“Definitely,” Elio agrees, before looking back at the sparkling stone in his hand.

Within a few moments, the four friends are exiting Mahalo Trail and into Iki Town to find Professor Kukui and Hala walking over to them.

“Ah, I see you managed to find Lillie,” Professor Kukui comments.

Lillie blushes slightly and starts bowing, “I’m sorry for been so troublesome.”

Professor Kukui waves a hand, “Its fine, Lillie. Really fine.”

It then that Hala notices Elio, “So you must be the new kid on the island, huh?”

“Yes he is,” Hau wraps an arm around Elio’s neck. “This is Elio. Elio, meets Hala, my grandfather and the Island Kahuna.”

“What’s an Island Kahuna?” Elio asks.

“The four Island Kahunas are the strongest trainers of their respectively island,” Hala answers. “We are in charge of the islands’ protection and wellbeing.

“You see, I was ‘very’ busy today, because I was meeting with Hala about preparations for the festival,” Professor Kukui explains.

“I know I keep on asking questions today, but what festival?” Elio asks.

“Oh man,” Hau slaps his forehead. “I completely forgot to tell you.”

Hala starts laughing, “That is my grandson’s forgiveness for you.”

“I’m sorry too,” Selene starts. “I don’t believe I forgot something so simple.”

“Well that fine,” Hala finally stops his laughing. “You see the Melemele Festival is the islanders’ way of honoring the island’s guardian, Tapu Koko.”

“I guess that would be a good way to thanks it,” Elio says to Hau, who simple smile in respond.

“Excuse me?” Professor Kukui asks, with Hala’s also surprised.

In a matter of moments, the four friends explain what happened, with Hala crosses his arms.

“Interesting,” Hala starts. “Although it is said to protect us, Tapu Koko is a fickle creature. It must’ve seen something special in you guys, not only to show it self, but also to intervene on your behalf.”

“And after it left, we found theses,” Selene holds up hers sparkling stone, as Elio and Hau do the same.

“Hmm, fascinating,” Hala looks at the stones closely. “Mine if I take a closer look at them?”

“Hum, sure,” Selene responds, with the guys nodding in equal confusion.

“We got lot of work to do, and most of the day is always spent…” Professor Kukui starts.

“Of course,” Hala realizes what his friend had in mind. “Let get started then.”

“Alright!” Hau shouts.

“I been waiting forever for this,” Selene admits.

“For what?” Elio asks.

“Your mom didn’t tell you?” Professor Kukui realizes. “I guess she wants it to be a surprise.”

Hala and Professor Kukui lead the four friends to the center of Iki Town, with Hala walks onto the stand.

“You three are here, because each of you want to be a Pokémon trainer, grow a close bond with your partners, and become the strongest you can be,” Hala starts. “But every journey starts with the smallest of steps. And every trainer starts with their first Pokémon.” Hala holds up a Poké Ball and throws, freeing Rowlet. “The Grass Quill Pokémon, Rowlet.” He then releases Litten. “The Fire Cat Pokémon, Litten.” He then let out Popplio. “And the Sea Lion Pokémon, Popplio.”

“Oh, it so cute,” Selene looks at Popplio, who smiles in respond. She then notices hers friends and Professor Kukui looking at her, and starts to get embarrasses.

“Right here and right now, you’ll begin your lives as Pokémon trainers,” Hala continues. “But here in Alola, relationships between people and Pokémon are very important. So while new trainers must choose their first Pokémon. The Pokémon must also choose their trainer. So, who will be first?”

“Well, Elio is the new guy, he sure go first,” Hau says.

“Me?” Elio’s surprised.

“I agree,” Selene adds.

“Okay then, Elio, who will you chooses?” Professor Kukui asks.

Elio takes a step forward, and looks at Rowlet, Litten, and Popplio, and starts thinking.

TO BE CONTINUED…

Whilst a little slow to move the plot, you have introduced the reader to a wide array of characters, and we've already got some interest in seeing which Pokemon Elio will pick. The story really doesn't do anything different that the games already told us, my worry here is that people might not be too interested to hear a re-telling of a game they just played, a story that's still fresh in their minds. I think the best part of the story so far is where it deviated from the games, the line about Elio waking up late because he forgot to pack his alarm was actually quite funny and it felt like a realistic reaction. My least favourite part was the lengthy sequence of characters saying "Alola." It doesn't add anything to the plot (that we know of) and basically feels pointless. I feel like Elio should have said something here to show a bit of character, even like "Nah, I think I'll stick to 'hey'."

My advice is make this story yours, give us your own insight about the games and story! Make these characters your own! The thing that sets apart bad fan fiction from good is that good stories feel new and exciting.

One tiny idea, what if Elio didn't pick one of those starters? Maybe he has a Pokemon from Kanto instead?

So, keep it up, keep writing! Great job so far!
