Today, I happened to pick up a copy of Beckett Anime & Manga Magzine (the issue was May 2006) and it said that Cartoon Network is very happy with with smash hits: Naruto, Yu-Gi-Oh! GX and Zatch Bell, so happy that they have decided not to get any new anime for the rest of the year (and with other hits like Bobobo-bobo-bobo doing good and IGPX Season 2 coming, it's no wonder)

What this will do to the Pokemon USA/Cartoon Network negotiation I don't know but if Cartoon Network really mean what they say about not picking up any new anime for the rest of the year, that would mean Pokemon's 9th Season is not getting picked up either...Pokemon USA's negotiation may not work because of CN's declaration...

I'm sure CN wouldn't want to tip its hand in such a public forum.

I wouldn't be so sure... Cartoon Network wouldn't change their words. No picking up anime means no money to spend. I'm sure their prevailing products could easily hold them until next year and not spend any money on which that is not so promising. So CN is actually doing a good thing here.

They're too busy buying the broadcasting rights for more episodes of "Saved By The Bell" -_-

Magazine info is constantly outdated. Articles are written up to two months in advance.

CN has aquired shows in mid-season before, and according to Maddie, talks between PUSA and CN only started a few days ago.

Exactly. CN's learned that it's better not to announce anything until *after* all the papers have been signed instead of announcing it while negotitiations are still going. They've lost quite a few shows by blabbing about them too early (Slayers, Detective Conan [when they tried to pick it up in the late '90's]) and have learned their lesson.

It said they didn't want to acquire any "new" anime. They already have Pokemon, they just don't show it anymore. They are renewing the liscense,

I'm sure Cartoon Network made that statement knowing what anime releases were on the horizon and how their own schedule was looking.

They probably didn't know that they were going to be offered one of the highest rating Saturday morning shows with their biggest target audience.

I'm sure the last thing CN would want is for a competing network to get it.

Pokémon is a big thing for a cable network like CN and I wouldn't be surprised if they were ready to sign as soon as Pokémon USA called them. We'll just have to wait and see.

True, but CN doesn't seem to know how to handle Pokemon. The last time they aired it, they shuffled the show around so much that it was very hard to keep track of it. And even when it finally did settle down on its weekend Miguzi slot, the show was often pre-empted for anything from a Hot Wheels movie to the 1,000th marathon of Ed, Edd, and Eddy.

So even if CN ends up acquiring the rights to the newest season, they'll probably bungle it up since they don't seem to know what to do with the show.

Dubbing companies have absolutely no say in when or how often a show airs, so I seriously doubt PUSA would actually succeed in "mandating" an airtime for the show. Especially if that air time conflicts with something else CN has planned for the slot PUSA picks out.

Cartoon Network doesn't seem to know what it's doing right now. It's stopped acquring new anime licenses, its production of new material has slown down to a trickle, they've begun showing live action movies, and they've expressed interest in producing live-action original sitcoms to compete with Disney's "That's So Raven" and "Lizzie McGuire". Essentially, we're looking at CN becoming Disney Channel II within the next five years.

They ought to realize that right now (or at least formerly), they satisfied a different audience than who The Disney Channel did. Doesn't it make economical sense to stay that way? It's not like Cartoon Network's audience is being directly and substantially drained by the other...right?

Actually, channels like Nickelodeon and Disney have been consistently beating Cartoon Network in certain demographics for a number of years now.

Sorry for the bump but I just heard
Nickelodeon has bought the rights to Pokemon (cartoon network cant air it without paying Nickelodeon)
I'm honestly wondering if this is true. I mean I did find out on the sixth of June. But my sister's boyfriend never lies. He works at the cable company and he met representatives from Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network. It turns out the respresentative from Nickelodeon told him (he asked because we had this discussion) and they told him this.
Can someone confirm this?
